Notre Dame Fires Weis, Hires Brian Kelly

Brian Kelly won all his nail-biters. That's really the only major difference between Brian Kelly 2009 and Charlie Weis 2009.

He's just a meaner, skinnier version of Weis. Neither team has any idea how to play defense.

If he's the next coach, he needs to find a defensive coach that can do to the defense what Weis did to the offense in 05. The parts are going to be there, experienced, and talented (most starters will be returning and Jrs/Srs).

Umm:

Q: Is it frustrating to you Pete Carroll, for example, portrayed in one way…

CW: Let me ask you this question: You guys know about things that go on in different places. Was I living with a grad student in Malibu, or was I living with my wife in my house? You could bet that if I were living with a grad student here in South Bend, it would be national news. He’s doing it in Malibu and it’s not national news. What’s the difference? I don’t understand. Why is it okay for one guy to do things like that, but for me, I’m scrutinized when I swear. I’m sorry for swearing; absolve my sins.

Moved this here from the college football thread to try and keep everything ND-related together.

Well, that's weird. But I guess if you're not going back to college anyway there won't really be repercussions for saying stuff.

No one would or will probably believe it, but it looks like failing at ND really humbled Charlie Weis. Not to say he's not still cocky in a way - I don't think that trait ever goes away in a person completely. But it's pretty obvious that he now sees that coaching isn't as easy as he thought it was going in.

The stuff about how he's trying to keep the recruits committed, and not trashing ND, are just two of many reasons why Charlie will always be remembered more positively in South Bend than Willingham or Davie even if he was worse in winning percentage.

what on earth is weis talking about with carroll? i don't know if carroll is doing anything inappropriate or not, but regardless of whether weis is coach, how is it appropriate for him to make comments to the media about another coach's personal life? apparently weis is a dick to go along with being a bad football coach.

(and yes i know weis has played the old "out of context" card)

Yeah, the rest of the interview was actually quite good and put him in a good light, but that question/answer was just absurd. There is no context in which that is sensible.

even if it was supposed to be off the record, it's extremely dumb. the reporters might not be able to print it but it certainly plants a seed in their head and they can go running off to l.a. to check out what's going on at pete carroll's house.

Yeah I agree in no way will that quote work in his benefit or was it necessary. He should have just made a more general quote, something like "there are a lot of things that coaches of other universities do that they don't get called out on that if I did the same thing while at ND I would have caught hell for it, there was definitely a double standard held upon me as the coach at ND."

That came out of nowhere. Weis apologized to Carroll though, and Carroll accepted it. I was reading where he told some other reporter that "Carroll kicked the crap out of me five times".

Meanwhile, Stoops is out, Urban's not an option, I think Kelly would be here by now if he was going to be the guy...who IS Notre Dame going to get?

Ron Prince is still available.

So is Mark Mangino.

It was off the record with just 5 journalists, all of whom Weis apparently thought he could trust. I imagine if there was 1 exchange off the record, there were more. There could have been more about Carroll that was discussed among the 6 guys in addition to that question (including comments made by the journalists themselves). Why Prister printed it, I don't know. He doesn't seem to hate covering ND like some of the other journalists that do so for their papers (like Brian Hamilton).

Weis should have declined to comment specifically, but who cares. Of course it's the one line that espn and all the other outlets that weren't in the room ran with (and tweeted all over the country). It's pathetic.

i know, imagine that a coach alleging another coach is committing infidelity with a girl half his age becomes national news while things like "i'm disappointed we didn't do better" were skipped over.

Bears on Charlie Weis' radar

A source close to Charlie Weis confirmed that the former Notre Dame coach would be interested in the Bears' offensive coordinator position if it were to become available after this season.

Ron Turner holds that job with the Bears, though the offense's poor performance and quarterback Jay Cutler's struggles have led to speculation that the Bears will dump Turner.

By working in Chicago, Weis' son, Charlie Jr., could graduate from St. Joseph's High School in South Bend, Ind., and wife Maura could continue to run Hannah and Friends, the nonprofit foundation named for their daughter and dedicated to helping children and young adults with autism and other special needs. The couple remains committed to the charity and hopes to continue to base it out of a farm north of South Bend.

Bears coach Lovie Smith still has two years and $10 million left on the contract extension he signed in the wake of the team's Super Bowl appearance and is expected to keep his job barring a complete meltdown by his team in its final four games. Working with a defensive-minded coach such as Smith would likely give Weis more autonomy while trying to revive the Bears' impotent offense...

I'll take him over Ron Turner.

which is why it's pathetic that a reporter would take an off the record comment and publish it with the transcript. There were 5 reporters there and only 1 published that q/a. Prister claimed his was first, but I saw 2 other transcripts published before his and none of them included that exchange.

Harbough or Pat Fitzgerald if Kelly is out of the running.

"He [Kelly] said, 'It's not an issue; I'm not going there,' " safety Aaron Webster said of Kelly about a Thursday conversation. "He said, 'I love Cincinnati, and I'm staying here.' "

Kelly has chided the media for spreading what he called "misinformation" and added, "You folks need to get a handle on this, because it's ridiculous."

Kelly has been rumored to be one of Notre Dame's top candidates and told ESPN this week that he would "entertain" a request from the Irish to speak to him after the Pitt game.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=4722121

So why is Kelly interviewing for the Notre Dame job if "He's not going there"? Why would he "entertain" an interview if he knows he doesn't want to go there? Maybe the media now needs to chide Kelly.

Would he actually take the Notre Dame job before the Bowl game against Florida? I've heard Notre Dame wants a coach in two weeks, but to leave Cincy before what is arguably their biggest football game ever is kinda sad.

This reminds me a lot of the "I'm in it for the long haul" speech that Self gave while at Illinois. Hours before he was driving the family to Lawerence.
