Notre Dame Fires Weis, Hires Brian Kelly

"He [Kelly] said, 'It's not an issue; I'm not going there,' " safety Aaron Webster said of Kelly about a Thursday conversation. "He said, 'I love Cincinnati, and I'm staying here.' "

Kelly has chided the media for spreading what he called "misinformation" and added, "You folks need to get a handle on this, because it's ridiculous."

Kelly has been rumored to be one of Notre Dame's top candidates and told ESPN this week that he would "entertain" a request from the Irish to speak to him after the Pitt game.

So why is Kelly interviewing for the Notre Dame job if "He's not going there"? Why would he "entertain" an interview if he knows he doesn't want to go there? Maybe the media now needs to chide Kelly.

Would he actually take the Notre Dame job before the Bowl game against Florida? I've heard Notre Dame wants a coach in two weeks, but to leave Cincy before what is arguably their biggest football game ever is kinda sad.

This reminds me a lot of the "I'm in it for the long haul" speech that Self gave while at Illinois. Hours before he was driving the family to Lawerence.

Coaches do this crap all the time. It's simply an attempt not to burn bridges until the ink is dry on their new contract, and never to be trusted.

That came out of nowhere. Weis apologized to Carroll though, and Carroll accepted it. I was reading where he told some other reporter that "Carroll kicked the crap out of me five times".

Meanwhile, Stoops is out, Urban's not an option, I think Kelly would be here by now if he was going to be the guy...who IS Notre Dame going to get?

Harbough or Pat Fitzgerald if Kelly is out of the running.

Harbaugh is never going to be the HC at ND. It's ridiculous.

Fitzgerald won't either, he's already denied interest.

Fitzgerald may or may not at some point. But Harbaugh isn't a candidate now and I don't think he ever will be, given his past and his personality.

So did Kelly.

Why is it ridiculous that Harbaugh would be the head coach at Notre Dame?

Notre Dame will never be good again. It's time to let that dream go, guys.

You're wrong. I'm not debating it.

they can't get get a good coach, and they either waste good recruits' development on bad coaches or just flat out can't recruit anyway. They haven't been good in any current teenager's lifetime and won't for the foreseeable future. The girls on campus are all ugly, the fans are terrible and the academics are harder 99% of the competition. There's literally no reason for anyone to go to notre dame.

you'll probably end up with some third-tier coach, anyway. Just get used to a life of arguing over whether or not you deserved the Insight Bowl or the Humanitarian.com bowl (see: missouri).

Four years ago they were an illegal push from the national title game, with a team that really shouldn't have even been that good.

Again, you're wrong. I'm simply not going to debate it.

ETA: Look, I'm not saying that ND's ever going to be a consistent title contender again. Hardly any team can be or has been a title contender for more than two straight years these days, so that's probably out of the question. But there's little reason that Notre Dame can't be at least like an Oklahoma or a Florida, consistently in the BCS conversation with occasional runs to the title. Charlie Weis proved you can get very talented kids to play for Notre Dame, so it comes down to the next coach to keep that up.

Charlie Weiss got talented kids to come to Notre Dame because he rode Willingham's recruits into the BCS game and promised them all he could get them into the NFL.

Since then, Notre Dame has sucked, Brady Quinn has failed and Claussen and Tate and a couple of 6 or 7-win seasons is all he has to show for it.

The next ND coach is going to be someone that 90 percent of HS football players in america couldn't pick out of a lineup of 2. What's best case? Brian Kelley? Great, someone no one recognizes who couldn't coach a defense on Madden 10. At least he has a track record of winning in a BCS conference. If he doesn't come it's just going to be some scrub that will win 6 games and be a placeholder until ND thinks it has hit on the next big thing, and then that will fail and so on and so on.

Look at the situation you're in. The last 2 decades of failure will keep the recruits away, and the unrealistic expectations of the university and fan base will keep any decent coach from wanting to come, too. Look at OU's situation, they lucked into Bob Stoops because they said "f it" and started from scratch. You think ND will ever allow that? Not a chance in hell.

Search your heart, you know this to be true.

National championships since 1980.

Notre Dame: 1

Georgia: 1

Penn State: 1

Alabama: 1

Michigan: 1

Tennessee: 1

Texas: 1

Teams that haven't been to a BCS game since at least 2006 (last time ND went):

Florida State

Michigan

Tennessee

Georgia

Miami

Pittsburgh

Guess those teams can't win anymore either. You want to break the news to them or should I?

What are the overall records of those team since 1980?

Notre Dame is 221-124 in that span. It would take a while to get the others on that list, but I'd bet you anything that at least a couple of them have been worse.

What kills me is that people think ND can't win anymore, but everyone agrees that Faust, Davie, Willingham and Weis (who have coached 18 of the last 29 seasons of ND football) were [expletive] football coaches. So which is it?

Tennessee was 259-102 since 1980.

Notre Dame can win again. Weis did it with Willingham's kids. Why couldn't a new coach do it? I think they just have incredibly high expectations.

And Willingham 'did it' with Davie's kids (I say that in quotes because that 2002 team was smoke and mirrors defined). People think ND's expectations are higher than they are. Our own athletic director said the goal is "to be in the BCS conversation" on a consistent basis. There are a slew of programs with those goals, yet ND is the one cited as having unattainable expectations. It makes no sense.
