so I totally missed all viewing of Iowa's game Saturday. Bounced a good 9 radio stations driving to buttlick, Minnesota trying to keep an audio feed. The hole of a town we were driving to is in a valley, more like a crater, surrounded by granite - so forget radio at destination. No BTN on the TV where we were staying, and the only thing resembling a bar was the local VFW - which didn't have the feed either. So I "watched" one of the greatest finishes in recent Iowa history on my phone, jamming the refresh button on the ESPN browser watching the score.

The only person I know that would ever have college football games on at Halloween parties is typing this post.

because you would be an authority on how to properly host any sort of party that doesn't take place at chuck e cheese

Are you saying I have kids or that I'm 12 years old? I'll tell you now, neither is true.

I didn't realize how truly bad Florida's schedule is until I looked it up during a debate with a friend. They play 2 currently ranked teams - LSU and South Carolina (the latter probably won't finish the season ranked). They play 3 trash non-conference games and Florida State. The rest of their schedule consists of Kentucky, Miss State, Georgia, Vanderbilt, Arkansas and Tennessee.

That's pretty weak.

I have one thing to ask. If we're going to blow it, please don't let it be against Indiana, Northwester, or Minnesota.

I'm glad we get to play Iowa later in the season this time... at least now when we win at Kinnick this time their fans can't say "It doesn't count. It was early. We were a different team then, etc." like they did last year!

It was one of the most exciting finishes I've seen in college football.

if iowa had started the season ranked #2 or something and florida ranked #24 or something, iowa would be easily ranked ahead of florida.

That is very likely true...but if Iowa was #1 and Florida was #4 or #5 to start the season, Iowa probably wouldn't be higher than 4th right now and Florida would likely be in front of them. Close games in the first couple weeks of the season can really hurt the national perception of a team and that is especially true when it's against an opponent like Northern Iowa. Iowa would have dropped behind several teams after week 1 and it would have been extremely difficult with the other close games that they have played for them to jump back over teams like Florida, Alabama, and Texas. But they likely would have been still ahead of Boise, USC, Cincy, and TCU if they had started the season in the top 5.

Iowa is #1 in the computers, so you have a good case

What's haunting Iowa is the drop after the UNI game.

They were 21 in the preseason. They dropped to 34 after that game. It wasn't until week 5 after beating PSU that they got back into the rankings.

If they beat UNI by 24 but have a closer game against ISU or Arizona, they're ranked at least 6th in the human polls right now and probably have a good shot at 4. And if they were 4th in the human polls with #1 in the computers, they're ahead of Texas at 3rd in BCS and could be in the driver's seat.

They beat ISU who is turning out to be decent 35-3 on the road and didn't rise. They were up 17 on a now ranked Arizona team until garbage time and didn't rise. If they would have needed a miracle finish at the end against either of those two they probably never would have dropped.

Adam Robinson is officially out, likely until bowl game and starting G Dace Richardson is the same.

So we're down to two true freshman (one of whom has redshirted all year) and a former walk-on at RB. Good news is that starting safety Brett Greenwood is good to go.

Yeah, the RB situation is a little dicey. Let's just hope Wegher can carry an increased load, Paki can at least be serviceable, and that Rogers is able to contribute. I do like having a 225 lb back in Rogers available for short yardage situations, though.

In the last year, we lost a Doak Walker winner to early entry into the draft, the incumbent who averaged 7 ypc last year to a knee injury, and now our leading rusher this year. Talk about taking a hit on the depth chart at RB. Eh, but we're still 8-0, so it's all good.

frankly if you need a blocked field goal to beat a i-aa team, you probably should be punished for that. not that iowa shouldn't be able to overcome that, but i wouldn't vote them ahead of the other undefeated teams because they've won on two last-second plays and had a number of other close calls.

Dez Bryant ruled ineligible until sometime in 2010. I can understand a couple games for lying, but a year seems ridiculous when he didn't actually commit a violation.

SI cover curse!

Of course, Okie State lost to Houston the following week and then Bryant's collegiate career spiraled out of control shortly thereafter.

Meanwhile, still nothing about Reggie Bush or O.J. Mayo.

The NCAA is a crock of [expletive].

I remember those devastatingly harsh penalties placed on Notre Dame immediately after the Kim Dunbar scandal.

And by devastating I mean 2 whole scholies pulled and by immediately after I mean 2-4.5 years after the fact.

2 more schollies than USC has lost for much more severe offenses, BTW.

And by "2-4.5 years after the fact" you must mean "less than one year", because that's the actual truth.

Just like the old joke in college basketball many years ago, that the NCAA was so mad at UNLV that they added another year to Cleveland State's probation.

The allegations were from 1993-1998. The investigation was opened in January 1998 and the punishments were handed down in December of 1999. That's nearly two years and you're looking at 5 years of alleged malfeasance. Let's not act like the NCAA was swift in its actions.

Anyway, the Bush/Mayo thing will bear fruit for you at some point and you can pretend its some great act of justice when all anyone really cares about is that a program you don't like gets punished--after all the only time people like the NCAA is when its sticking it to hated teams.

Also OK St is not being punished, Dez Bryant is. It is similar to the the Maurice Clairet(sp?) deal at Ohio St. There is not any evidence of wide spread abuse, so the school suspends the player, school stays out of trouble. I dont know a lot about the Bush/Mayo stuff at USC. If there is no evidence of widespread violations and lack of institution control, my guess is the desired punishment from people will not come. Probably just a slight tap on the wrist, similar to what ND got with the Dunbar incident.
