Neither should have an opinion until they both decide to add a Conference Championship at the end of the regular season.

:-))

Yeah, lets have some more 70-7 games in a half empty stadium, those are great.

Dew how do you not see the difference between a road game planned years in advance and a last minute bowl trip? Seriously, give me a break with the SEC road game nonsense.

30,000 fans can make a bowl game scheduled at the last minute, why couldn't they make a playoff game scheduled around the same time (if not a bit before)?

Why the hell should the Pac-10 have a conference championship?

ETA: Didn't see soccer10k's post.

you guys are missing the point.

The question was raised about why wouldn't the current bowl hosts be happy to take part in something like this. The answer is because it would destroy the bowl games that matter. The Rose, Sugar, Orange, Fiesta bowls would cease to exist if they went to a multi-tier playoff. Sure people who plan a generic bowl would love to be a part of a major tournament, because they don't currently matter, but that was not the question. But it wouldn't work for the big guys. They would no longer get a team and their fans coming for a week with the sole purpose of enjoying that bowl game. Now, if you take the current system, with 4 major bowls and a NC game at one of those sites a week later, and tweak it so that each year 2 bowls are designated for the top 4 and the winners play the NC game a week later, then they'd probably be on board.

Why is the happiness of the bowl operators even a major point of consideration? If they don't want to participate, or rather if they don't want to change, there's plenty of sponsors and stadiums willing to step in. If the 4 major bowls right now passed on a playoff system working under a new mega TV deal with 4 different venues/cities they'd effectively be committing suicide. It's much better business for them to play ball than it is to be relegated to a decided 2nd tier status, even if it means losing out on revenue.

Maybe it's a negative sum game for them but I can't imagine that the pie for everyone else wouldn't be a lot bigger under a playoff system. The conferences certainly wouldn't be missing out on anything. The BCS bowl games only matter relative to a playoff system that doesn't currently exist.

Pac-10 doesn't need a conference championship since each team in the conference actually plays every other team.

NCAA rules prohibit title games unless you have 12 teams in the conference, which no one ever pays attention to when they start yammering about conference title games (which are dumb anyway).

Well, the question that started this discussion was why wouldn't they leap at the opportunity, so that is why the issue is being discussed. And the reason their happiness matters is because they pay money.

You can talk about the theoretical money involved, but right now such a system is not in place so one can only speculate that it would be a gold mine. I have serious doubts about a multi-tiered playoff, with or without the bowls' involvement.

That sportscaster isn't going to be moving up from Lubbock, TX for quite a while.

I'm with jersey on this argument. A playoff sounds great but anything beyond a +1 would kill the bowl system. I like the current system enough that I don't want it to go away just so we can get the top 8 in a playoff. December 26th until January 3rd (and then the championship) is awesome.

I'm as stressed about the Indiana game as any game this season. Teams like this have always nipped Iowa in the butt. Hopefully we can rid the game of its competitive aspect quickly.

I'm mainly worried about this one because of injuries. This is the first game that I'm not having a panic attack beforehand in quite some time at least, so that's a plus.

Doesn't seem like anyone from Iowa on this board are Iowa St. fans. So who makes up their fanbase?

That's a good question. I've grown up in Iowa and I've known like two of them and they didn't care that much about sports. There just aren't that many.

Chicago suburbanites with average high school grades?

I think a lot of Big 12 fans (especially fans of Big 12 South schools) forget Iowa State is in the conference.
