I don't think it's fair to say that was an 18 point game. It was closer than that and if it weren't for the weird pick 6 then it might be a blowout the other way. But Iowa outscored Indiana 35-3 in the second half. What would people's perceptions be if Iowa was up 35-3 at the end of the first half and then won by the same score?

their opinion would have been completely different, but then again there's a big difference between leading by four scores at halftime and trailing a bad team by more than a touchdown going into the fourth quarter. indiana tensed up and choked, then completely quit after giving up the lead. that was pretty obvious.

You could say the exact same thing about the Penn State/NU game. Close in the 4th quarter, then NU choked/tensed up and PSU ran away with it. Yet PSU jumped Ga Tech while Iowa slid....

There are several reasons why the game yesterday was so damaging for Iowa.

1) 6 TO's. That's quite a bit, and since all of those were when Iowa was trailing the sloppy play in a blowout rationalization doesn't work.

2) The officials. How much of an impact they had is debatable. But when certain calls are a joke (the 2nd TD replay certainly was when the best anybody can say about it was that they weren't sure if the foot was down or not) that tends to stick with people.

3) The fact that the plays in the 4th quarter were so easy hurt Iowa. They didn't really need to make plays to win the game-they completed two medium length passes and Indiana just let them go all the way for scores. Then the INT that sealed the game was just a duck. There is the perception out there that Iowa ended up not having to show they were the better team as Indiana just stopped playing.

On that last point, Iowa's first 3 TD's in the second half were on a fluke interception, then 2 good 20 yard routes where the receivers were allowed to run up the field and score without much opposition.

Iowa clearly showed they were much better than Indiana. But the way that was accomplished was worrying for them. Indiana was able to drive on them (2 60+ yard TD drives and would have had 3 if not for that horrible overturn on the replay). Iowa made lots of mistakes with the turnovers. After being given lots of chances, they were able to have some plays that got them back into the game and then allowed them to pull away.

Now, this does happen to other teams. In many ways, this was much the same game as the Florida-Mississippi State game. But these type of games build on each other. Almost everybody has 1. It's not unusual to have 2. But to have at least 3 and possibly 4 of these types of games against really bad teams is a very bad trend for Iowa.

Very true. They could really use a clean, big win against Northwestern. Not expecting it though.

My only thing is that when a name brand school has a win like yesterday, most of the reaction is that they woke up, made plays when they had to and put it away.

I'm not sure I buy this. People would be criticizing the 2002 OSU team for a game like yesterday. A team who is moderately similar to Iowa (although their close games were against better teams for the most part than Iowa's)

I think Iowa's one of the weirdest teams....well ever. They barely beat FCS teams then they beat the top 5 team in their house. Where is the precedence for this?

so they made mistakes but still beat a vastly inferior team by 18. They're still the only team in the country with 9 wins.

that's because the other six undefeated teams haven't played 9 games yet.

not necessarily. though unlikely in some cases, any of those teams could lose next week. and they've all had a bye.

Thesis: If Oregon had beaten Boise State, they'd have the best resume in the country and would deserve to be ranked No. 1. They've been the best team in the country since that opening-night loss, if you ask me. The only other chink in their armor was that Purdue took them to the wire.

they are the highest ranked 1 loss team, so it would appear that most people agree with you.

I'm certainly no Bulldog homer, in fact I loathe them, but they really aren't that bad of a team. And I'd imagine they are certainly better than Indiana, Ark. State, or whatever teams Iowa had some issues with. The Bulldogs hung in there very well with Florida, came within 4 inches and two stupid coaching calls from beating LSU, hung in pretty well against Georgia Tech, and were within a touchdown of Houston.

Duke winning whatever they call the division they're in in the ACC would be awesome.

not really, because then a team like duke or clemson or bc would make the bcs. georgia tech is really the only hope of having a good team come out of that conference.

How many people would watch a BCS game between Duke and Cincinnatti. I'd say it'd be about 7.

I know I would, as would all my friends so definitely more than 7. Hell, I'd probably go.

The number of non-Duke and non-Cincinnati fans would probably be about 7.
