I think this move stinks. You can't look at it as Adams being a better player than whoever the Bears would pick in the 2nd round. You have to factor in Adams' contract, the 2nd rounder pick's contract, and where else the money saved could have been spent.

This move may very well help the Bears this year and every year under Adams' tenure as a Bear. But will it help them more than a 2nd round pick and the extra money to play with? You are still looking at a team that will need a RT for next year (assuming Williams moves to LT on 2010), because Pace looks done. You are still looking at a team that has a C on his last legs, and mediocrity at both OG spots. You are still looking at a team that has an aging MLB who will have played 30 minutes of football in 20 months coming into the 2010 season. The starting SLB is on a 1-year deal. You still need depth at CB, the safety positions, and the D-line. And a big WR wouldn't hurt either. But now, you won't have a 1st day pick to get an impact player, preferably on the line. And you won't have the money to go out and get one.

This is sensible if and only if Wally is allowed to leave. Do we have an extra second rnd pick next year after we traded down this year?

Nope. The Bears potentially won't have a pick until 96th, if they win the Superbowl.

I'm assuming Adams can't play DT? I don't see why we traded for a DE when Brown and Ogun are both holding their own. DT is the much better problem. Now we don't have a first and second round picks next year.

On the positive side, we are getting a good young player. He's expensive, but short term I think we're under the cap anyways and plus everyone is saying next year will be uncapped anyways.

This is the least scientific way to rate a player and it's not very exact or sometimes accurate, but for the purposes of judging relative talent, Madden's ratings have Adams as a 79 OVR, Ogunleye is 83 and Brown is 78.

Is Adams all that expensive? I don't have a contract breakdown, but could a lot of the money be tied up in bonuses that have already been paid?

Right now, I kind of like the move. He's clearly a physically gifted player and I'm betting Marinelli knows exactly what he's getting.

His base salary for 2009-2012 is quite small. Most of his contract was likely tied up in bonus money that was likely already paid. I'm guess that much like Cutler, this is a very Bears friendly cap situation right now. And their own D ends are going to cost so much more in new contracts.

rotoworld said 6 year 42m, 18m in bonus, 900k-1.5m per year for 2009-2012, potential for 4m incentives. I'm guessing it's roughly a 4/9-12m right now including 2009.

Not bad at all.

Could the Bears be more active in the FA market in the next few years? Now having a franchise QB, they may be more motivated to spend money?

This is a wait and see trade for me. Why did they trade for Gaines if they have Gilbert who is waiting in the wings? Will they let Ogun AND Andersen leave in the offseason?

Adams had a pick 6 off of Orton last year.

He had some pretty remarkable numbers at the combine. He ran a 4.64 in the 40 and vertical jumped 36".

(He also got a 7 on the Wonderlic).

Marinelli + our system + 4th overall pick talent = beast

I'm excited about the move, especially in light of what jersey posted about his contract.

Pure speculation on my part, but I wonder if this trade shines any light on what the Bears front office and coaching staff see in Mark Anderson. A lot of people were hoping Marinelli would be able to make him a playmaker, but he's only been occasionally good this year but often disappears for huge stretches of games.

I haven't thought negatively of Mark Anderson at all so far this year.

I think it has a lot more to do with the fact that Ogunleye is a free agent at the end of the year.

BTW, just read that Adams was 14th in QB hits last year, and 22nd in hurries. Combined, 16th; more than James Harrison, Dumervil, KVB... He's not a bust.

What a phenomenal trade for the Bears. Dude is 26, reasonably affordable (given that most of his bonus money should be paid out), and has had a solid start to his career. He'll thrive in the Windy City.

It could mean the Bears are seriously considering moving Gilbert to the inside, or it could affect Melton's status with the team. I think acquiring Adams means Wale is likely gone. But based on pure talent and athlethic ability a three way rotation of Gilbert/Melton and Adams would be nice, but only if CRM can get all three playing anywhere near their talent level.

Am I the only one that finds it humorous that the Bucs are turning to a guy like Stylez to replace Adams in their lineup? I mean, come on....Stylez?

Love the trade. You're not going to get a better replacement for Wale. He's young, relatively cheap, extremely athletic/talented and has had success in the NFL.

Yeah, it sucks that the Bears are out of a day one pick next year but DE would have been a need and they scratched it off the list.

Adams was already in "our" system in Tampa.

Why not wait until the offseason?

I've read alot of feedback on this trade, seems the fans are split 50/50. The problem with some of their logic is the "Cover-2" system is heavily reliant on the front four pressure. DE is more of a need right now then a safety. You can argue that we need secondary help, but I personally feel with Aflava and Bowmen, they'll both be developing over time and getting better each game. I feel with this next draft, we need to address OL/Secondary/WR.

Also something tells me the Bears are going to be in the hunt for quality FA's.

Maybe a player of Gaines' potential and upside isn't available in the offseason.

Well, on this team you have to love the young nucleus on offense. The top skilled players (Cutler, Forte, Knox, Hester, Bennett, Olsen) are all 26 or under. Williams, Beekman and Omiyale are 26 or under on the OL. Afalava, Payne, and Manning are young safeties. Roach is young at LB and there are a couple young backup DL. But other than that the team is aging, especially on defense.

Trade deadline is Tuesday. Adams himself would have been available in the offseason had the deal not been made with in the next 3 days.
