We're a big possession reciever away from a great offense.....and I believe via the next two drafts, our focus will be on the OL and defense.

not going to happen, but if you guys got houshmandzadeh who is very unhappy in seattle, i might have to root for the bears more than the bengals.

Why wait until the offseason for a guy you can get NOW?

We watched the defense wear down really bad last year. The Bears spent a ton acquiring Jay Cutler this year. If there is an outside chance that you are a playoff team looking at your roster today, why not make an improvement that increases those chances for this season and down the road.

Favre is a brittle QB. Peterson is a workhorse, but can he go all season long again without an injury with such a heavy workload? The Williams boys are still at risk of missing significant time this year. I don't think their troubles are over just yet. If we leap frog over the Vikings, what other teams in the NFC can we project to absolutely be better than the Bears in a 60 minute game?

The offensive line sucks, but I don't think we can just write this team off for possibly going deep into the playoffs simply because the line sucks. I don't know why you wouldn't want to improve the team anywhere it can help you this year. That makes it sound like you really don't have any hope for the team to win it all this year, and I don't think the coaching staff should be looking at a 3-1 season so far as not having any hope. They should to be looking for ways to make a 3-1 club even better.

Love the trade. You're not going to get a better replacement for Wale. He's young, relatively cheap, extremely athletic/talented and has had success in the NFL.

Yeah, it sucks that the Bears are out of a day one pick next year but DE would have been a need and they scratched it off the list.

Why not wait until the offseason?

Maybe a player of Gaines' potential and upside isn't available in the offseason.

Trade deadline is Tuesday. Adams himself would have been available in the offseason had the deal not been made with in the next 3 days.

UM might have been insinuating that Adams could have been traded to another team either before the deadline or before we traded for him after the season.

You trade for him now to lock up the "what to do post-Wale" issue, and because trading for him now means we get him for the remainder of this season. Another very skilled DE in a potential playoff run season has value as well.

Unless you think waiting to the offseason would have dropped the price to a 3rd rounder (which it probably wouldn't), then it would make no sense to wait.

I agree with your overall point, but the Giants and Saints are still out there, too.

I didn't mean it to sound as though the Vikings were the only team better than the Bears.

What I'm trying to say is that I don't think the Bears are a middle of the pack type team, but rather one of the more threatening teams in the conference. The Sunday night game is extremely meaningful in that this will give us more of an idea of where the Bears fit in with teams like Atlanta and Philly.

I'm also a firm believer that we haven't seen this Bears team firing on all cylinders just yet. The offense is still throwing stuff up against the wall to see what sticks.

I'm assuming Adams can't play DT? I don't see why we traded for a DE when Brown and Ogun are both holding their own. DT is the much better problem. Now we don't have a first and second round picks next year.

On the positive side, we are getting a good young player. He's expensive, but short term I think we're under the cap anyways and plus everyone is saying next year will be uncapped anyways.

This is the least scientific way to rate a player and it's not very exact or sometimes accurate, but for the purposes of judging relative talent, Madden's ratings have Adams as a 79 OVR, Ogunleye is 83 and Brown is 78.

I wish I could laugh at you for this, but I do the exact same thing

I agree with that assessment. I'm really encouraged coming through the opening four games at 3-1. I had thought these next four games would be easier, but the next couple contests are suddenly looking like a real test for the team. If we can get by Atlanta and Cincy at 4-2, I think we can close the first half with a 6-2 record and position ourselves well in the second tier of contenders. If we sweep these games, then we'll have a case about being in the elite teams.

Bears release TE Michael Gaines.

noooooooooo, there goes all my potential "Michael Gaines Adams Anthony" jokes and candid photo ops!

jk, In all seriousness, was Gaines actually on the active roster from week to week? Did we lose anything by dropping him.

Yes, I agree. You take the opportunity when it presents itself. Adams might have been unavailable for whatever reason. You might not get a better DE in the offseason. And with the savings from Ogun to Adams, you can look elsewhere in free agency (OL, WR, 2nd RB, MLB, CB) and look to lock up Cutler.

Even if he was, there really is no reason to carry a 4th TE, IMO. I'd rather pick someone up off the scrap heap or maybe trade Gaines for more depth at LB.

i would just like to add that i would like to take the falcons' faces and smash them in with a giant rock over and over again.

sounds exhausting. i bet you could only get through like three or four before really slowing down.

it's funny, whenever the bears play a team from a city with no diginity, lawrence holmes interviews some needle-dick beat reporter from said city and they always brag and brag and brag about how good their team is and about how few weaknesses they have. the guy from atlanta went so far as to dispute holmes' contention that matt ryan wasn't quite in peyton manning's league, yet.

Marinelli + our system + 4th overall pick talent = beast

I'm excited about the move, especially in light of what jersey posted about his contract.

Adams was already in "our" system in Tampa.

When he was decent in his first two years (14th in QB hits last year, and 22nd in hurries. Combined, 16th; more than James Harrison, Dumervil, KVB)?

I really don't know what they're doing now with Morris.

Not that it means much of anything, but....through first 24 games: Mario Williams: 8.5 sacks. Gaines Adams: 11.0 sacks.

same exact thing went on when we played the saints in the nfccg

I can't imagine why the Atlanta Falcons would engender so much hatred. It's the most non-descript franchise in NFL history.

It'd be like being a basketball fan and having a virulent hatred for the Milwaukee Bucks.

that's a total slap in the face to the milwaukee bucks, though. they won a championship with lew alcindor and oscar robertson and dominated the central during the late 70's and early 80's.

I'm going to try to stay out of this thread tomorrow, at least during the game. If, by some small chance Atlanta wins, I might be back after the game.

fixed. :hello:

so i guess we won't be seeing you after the game then.
