Discussion: Milton Bradley For Oliver Perez

By Tim Dierkes [september 21 at 9:48am CST]

There is no indication the Cubs and Mets have discussed swapping disappointing free agent signings Milton Bradley and Oliver Perez. It makes for interesting discussion, however. Joel Sherman of the New York Post even wonders if an expanded deal could include Carlos Zambrano or Luis Castillo.

Bradley's power disappeared this year en route to a .257/.378/.397 line in 473 plate appearances. He adapted poorly to Chicago, his season ending with a team-mandated suspension for his negative comments. Would New York be any easier? The switch-hitting Bradley turns 32 in April and has $21MM remaining on his contract.

Perez's already-lousy control worsened to a ridiculous 7.9 walks per nine innings in his 14 starts this year. He still piled up strikeouts, but home runs and hits were a problem as well. His 28.3% groundball rate was among the lowest in baseball. Perez arrived at Spring Training from the WBC out of shape, and was booted to the bullpen in May. He dealt with a knee problem thereafter and had season-ending surgery in August. The 28-year-old Scott Boras client has $24MM remaining on his contract.

Perez for Bradley - who says no?

NO!

Any chance that the reporters can start harassing Aaron Miles and get him to say what a bunch of losers the fans, the organization, and his teammates are?

His emotional outburst and irrational thoughts, with the added "shoot yourself in the foot" syndrome indicates to me he is on drugs. Knowing this we should get him rehabbed and the trade him to a team where he can hit .340 with 40 homeruns. (referencing Dennis Eckersly and Josh Hamilton)

There's nothing else to say.

I blame the rap music.

That too

if jim has manned up enough to suspend bradley (albeit way too late to do either bradley or the cubs any good), he's publicly admitting to making a mistake. hopefully he will man up to dfa miles who i am probably more qualified to be a member of the team than he is.

Bradley acting like a jackass all season is not Hendry's fault, the fact that the players in the clubhouse do not seem to miss Bradley is not Hendry's fault... Now signing Bradley is his fault. Hendry is doing the right thing here, unfortunately all signs point to the Cubs being weaker in Right Field next year.

He missed the previous couple games with an injury, that started with Bradley himself taking himself out of the game. He's legitimately hurt

Is he though? What I've been hearing on the radio this morning is that Bradley took himself out of the lineup not because of an injury, but because he was upset with Lou double-switching him out the day before.

Well if you heard it on Chicago SportsTalk Radio, its definitely true. I mean those guys are always fair, never jump to conclusion, and always know what they are talking about......

Zambrano and Bradley for Beltran and Perez?

I wouldn't do a trade like that but could at least it open the discussion.

Z + Bradley + Cashner/Jackson for Beltran + Reyes + John Niese Cubs pay 1/2 of Bradley salary.

If we have to trade Bradley, I'm pretty sure I make that trade.

NY, yours is crazily lopsided for us.

Now I'm wondering who the hell we're going to find that's willing to take him? Even if we eat his salary... I'm not sure how many teams are going to want anything to do with him.

I've been a huge Milton Bradley fan up until right around nowish. I just don't understand what his deal is. As others have said, he's got some sort of serious psychological issue. He sabotages every situation he's in and it's almost like he doesn't want to succeed.
