    I'd just like to go on record as saying my predictions in this thread represent perfectly why I never bet on sports. I could not have been more wrong about this current Cardinal team. Pretty embarrassing, really, on my part. If you ever hear of me giving you a "sure thing," load up on the other team, because I promise I am wrong. Kenny Rogers I am not (the chicken guy, not the pitcher).

    the cards have the ability to get better at baseball when they're mad? those guys are awesome In a tight division race, where it may come down to one or two games, getting the Cardinals fired up enough to sweep the Reds could potentially be a big deal. Yeah, there's still 50 games or so left in the season, but this series may become pivotal, or at least be looked upon as a turning point. It's not a matter of the Cards becoming better at baseball, it's a matter of the Reds giving up a game or two in a race where there's no margin for error.

    I've complained about Yadi all year, but God bless him for getting in Phillips' face. I was worried before, but now I have no doubt the Cardinals will win the division.

    I thought for sure there was no way he was as good as the hype. I was dead wrong. He was making people look stupid up there, and his stuff is totally legit. I really can't believe how impressive that debut was.

    I'd imagine Wakamatsu/Jack Z called the meeting. Our management was too busy calling him a piece of [expletive]. Poor, poor misunderstood Milton. Its everybody's fault but his. This seems like an odd reaction to someone coming to his bosses and teammates asking for help. It looks like he's placing the blame squarely on himself.

    As a Cardinal fan, I could give a [expletive] about the Mets. Yeah, it was awesome to beat them in '06, but only because it was the playoffs and everybody expected us to lose. And the "pond scum" teams were when I was baby, so [expletive] Doc Gooden or whoever was even on those teams doing all blow. Couldn't care less. It is literally insane to say the Cards-Mets rivalry (or Cards-Royals) even approaches the intensity of Cards-Cubs. It's not even close.

    Fernando Perez is a published poet and he has solid comedic timing. I think he's my new favorite player.

    You're a fan of both the Cards and the Cubs? C'mon. While I imagine its a rare breed, keep in mind that all of central/southern Illinois is split to varying degrees of Cards/Cubs. I know several people who grew up in Cubs/Sox households and do like both teams. I assume the same thing happens down south. ETA: I don't buy Magdal's story or a word he (she?) types. I can see how it might happen, but it does really seem like saying, "I'm a Democrat and a Republican, I just really like both sides of the aisle." What do you root for when the Cards-Cubs play, a good game? Pick a side, damnit. I can totally understand not virulently hating the other team, but actively rooting for both? (And I'm with you on Magdal, but that statement really grabbed me for some reason.)

    I was just kinda playing around. And Big Mac kinda clarified what he said yesterday by saying, yes, they helped, in that they kept him on the field. At the time, and perhaps I'm just parsing language, he may have interpreted the question as, Did those steroids help give you the skills necessary to hit home runs? And and he answered that question truthfully, at least in his own mind. It's not just Cubs fans harping on him for what he said. The national media is pounding him, too (case in point, the guys on the MLB Network immediately after the interview, save for Harold Reynolds). I'm just not sure what more McGwire can do, as far as admissions go. (So, yeah, I'm pretty much completely in agreement with NonProfitCow.)

    Hammer him when he won't admit the steroid use, then once he does, immediately hammer him. "That's some catch, that catch-22," he observed. "It's the best there is," Doc Daneeka agreed.

    My guess is it would have something to do with the players union. Or maybe a statute of limitations regarding laws he may have broken to get these steroids? I have no idea. Regardless, it's good to see Big Mac come clean, even if isn't surprising in the least.

    Fair enough. Their value is very Theriot-like, tied into how little the team has to pay them. They are passable players who make very little, and their value plummets as their salary rises. I'm not sure either is a long-term answer. (Although, in the interest of full disclosure, I've gone pretty gay for Brendan Ryan. I'm a sucker for a man with a mustache.)

    False, especially regarding Brendan Ryan. Skip is pretty average, but Fangraph's had him valued at $5.4 last year, with a salary of $0.8. He's getting a raise this year in arbitration, but I'd expect his value to still be a bit more than what the Cards are paying him. Ryan, on the other hand, was worth $14.2, making just $0.4, making him an excellent value based mostly on his stellar defense.

    Ultimately, I think this is a good move for the Cardinals. I think we will see them up the payroll in the coming years, likely up to about $115-120. This is pure speculation, but I think the reason DeWitt wanted to keep the payroll at $100mil was because he didn't want to spend wildly on players that weren't really worth it. And I think he wanted to keep the payroll where it was, knowing that Albert's going to get a fat contract soon, and I think the past couple years' payrolls have reflected that reality. That said, as a Cardinal fan, I still think we need one more impact bat. Ludwick just isn't a solid enough bat in the 5 hole. I don't know where that impact bat is going to come from (and I really don't expect much more from this offseason), so I'm skeptical of proclaiming the Cardinals' dominance just yet. Just as last year, our entire season is going to come down to the health of our starting pitchers. (Also, Franklin wearing down last year should be a huge red flag. We need bullpen depth.)
