i don't understand this line of thought at all

if someone isn't doing a good job, you hire someone else...no one can help the baggage at this point

why continue to let a drunken sailor man the ship?

Because the other options range from sailors who might have undisclosed alcohol problems to drunken sailors who can't keep themselves away from the crack pipe.

That's really not true. You don't have to hire the same crap that has been floating around the big leagues, you can go outside that pool.

Hence the ones who might have undisclosed alcohol problems. Maybe you'll get someone sober and capable, but you might also find yourself in the same situation a few years from now.

And this is why I hate Bob. No Bob, Ryan did not give us exactly what we needed. What we needed was him to come out and shut the Phillies out. It has happened before. Why does he always stand up for some guys, yet just attack Milton and Soriano whenever presented the chance?

Can't defend him for that but he's been blasting the whole team for the last few games up until today, which has been nice to hear.

This is the worst Game thread I have ever seen!Trying to keep track on this horrible Gameday and have no clue what's really going on as you guys just talkin' about GM's and next year and Lou!

An occasional description of this game would be appreciated. Thank you, boys.

Just think, a exactly a week ago, the Cubs had a chance to win and end the day in first place by a game. Instead, we lost that game and 7 games later we are looking at being 4.5 out. When you go 1-7 and the opponent goes 5-1 that will happen.

Our playoff odds have fallen from 47% to 22% since July 31st.

Lowe 25 GS 12-7 4.08 ERA 1.41 WHIP 8 HR 49 BB

Dempster 21 GS 6-5 4.16 ERA 1.38 WHIP 17 HR 59 BB

How is Dempster better this year?

You don't give somebody the contract he gave Dempster just because he had a good year when everything was going for him.

Cubs look like they're just rolling over for the Phillies. Everything seems to be going their way and against us like that bloop double they just had.

Fitting end to a really bad series.

He brought in a player that can't handle the pressure to play in RF at Wrigley.

Are you talking about Milton Bradley? The guy that is OPSing .930 in home games?

It's amazing how people still bash Bradley. He's not the problem. Of course you'd like his power numbers to be better, but my God. He nearly has a .400 OBP and his OPS is close to .800. I can't complain with Milt.

The Phillies remind me a lot of the 2008 Cubs. They're just good in every way.

I hope they don't tank in the playoffs. Cause if they do we are looking at another Cardinal world series appearance.

Actually, this is pretty tame compared to some of the legendary game thread blow-ups from 2004-2007.

And Derek Lowe is like 38 years old.

36 and probably better than Dempster.

Dempster has been better than Lowe statistically each of the past two seasons. How is Lowe probably better?

Because I don't believe that was the real Dempster last year. And I'd be willing to bet that Lowe's numbers this year end up better than Dempsters.

Lowe's struck out fewer and walked more in more innings than Dempster this year. Lowe's K/9 is 4.7, while Dempster's is 7.3.

Lowe could finish the year better than Demp, but everything points to Demp being better the remainder of the year.

I love Milt, but he was paid to OPS near .900 not .800.

But the thing is, this offseason he will have to change things. Much like last year when he moved Dero to add payroll. So odds are he will move one of our contracts. I imagine He moves Z. But if he does that in order to create some flexability and then uses that to sign another Aaron Miles, it's going to get ugly.

I understand some people have this irrational fear/hatred of Hendry, but do you honestly belive that given the limited money available and the circumstances that if he did trade Zambrano his only move would be to then overpay for someone as historically bad as Aaron Miles?

The odds of some whiz kid being hired who can make magic with the very limited resources the Cubs will likely be facing this offseason and next season aren't pretty slim to nil. I'm not at all opposed to Hendry being replaced, but I'd rather it be when someone new coming in would actually have something to work with.

Irrational? He traded DeRosa to save $5 million so he could give Dempster $9 million for 4 YEARS and Miles $2.2 million. He brought in a player that can't handle the pressure to play in RF at Wrigley. Don't get me started on Soriano.

That's not the reason why DeRosa was traded. Bradley has been very good at home. Soriano is a major reason the Cubs made the playoffs the last two years (albeit with a terrible contract).

Even if Bradley succeeds I think it was a huge gamble. I hope he does succeed, as he has. I'm just questioning the judgment. You can't disagree the he was a huge disappointment from the left side for much of the season, the reason he was brought in.

How can they be like the 2008 Cubs when they're not too right handed? The 2008 Cubs were too right handed dangit.

I don't think many are defending Dempster's contract. Just that it was smarter than paying more for Lowe.

Neither pitcher is lighting the world on fire right now. If Lowe is better, it's a tiny amount of improvement that isn't worth the additional cost.

Like Dayton Moore.

Or Josh Byrnes

Or Jon Daniels.

While true, with how bad he started it is going to take a miraculous 2nd half to get him to a 900OPS. Since the All Star Break hes over 900

Yes, it was a gamble, largely due to his injury history.

However, I'm still trying to figure out how all of that leads you to believe that he "can't handle the pressure to play in RF at Wrigley", when he's playing very well at Wrigley this season.
