Enjoy running away with the division and never looking back Red Birds. You have a manager and a GM who wanted to win and they made it happen.

As opposed to Jim Henry and Lou Piniella deciding that having another .500 season while missing the playoffs in heartbreaking fashion would be just dandy?

I never said Jim and Lou dont want to win. I am saying that Jockety saw a weak division with no obvious favorite and knew if he made the right moves, they can take it and run, and thats exactly what they seem to have done. Cubs didnt have the money to fight back, Brewers didnt want to part with the prospects. This is no longer the lucky pixie dust Cardinals, they have a great team on their hands. Hopefully, in the end, they get knocked out first round and next year are left with what they started the year with.

Sure glad we have the guy that everyone in their right minds saw regressing this year instead of that Lowe guy in ATL.

More great GM'ing by Hendry.

Dempster has been better than Lowe this year.

And it's not even close. But I still would've signed Lowe. He might be the perfect Wrigley pitcher.

Dempster's better than Lowe, Lowe's older, and signed for more money.

Of course you take Derek Lowe.

Couldn't we have chose save money let Sean Marshall start?

Walt did do this, the Rolen move made that obvious.

A great team?

They're a decent team in a medicore to bad divison with one of the easiest schedules in baseball.

They made a couple of very good moves this year but calling them a "great team" is pretty generous.

Is Dempster really better than Lowe?

You don't keep a guy that you're planning on getting rid of before you're a contender again. You bring in the GM that you want to rebuild as soon as you can.

If the means to rebuild aren't there for the time being, why? What's the new guy going to do without any money that Hendry can't?

Dempster's been better the past two seasons (2008 and 2009) and he's 4 years younger.

This year:

Dempster: 4.04 ERA, 1.386 WHIP, 99:48 K:BB

Lowe: 4.08 ERA, 1.407 WHIP, 79:49 K:BB

They're not the "murderers row" some have refered them as, but anytime you have Pujols/Holliday/Ludwick to get through in the heart of the lineup, thats pretty damn good. Carpenter/Wainwright is a great front end to any rotation, although I still ahve my doubts about the rest of their pitching staff

Say we do get a chance to move a contract or two, don't you want the guy making those moves for possible prospects to be the guy that's going to be there building the contending team?

I would hope so.

He started the season in the rotation.

Couldn't we have explored a trade option? Using the money we didn't give to Dempster?

I'm not saying we should've signed Dempster. The contract sucks. I'm saying signing Lowe would have been even dumber.

That's definitely a good 3-4 duo, but outside of DeRosa and Molina and Ludwick (sometimes) the rest of that lineup is pretty unimpressive.

It's just so damn frustrating. Everyone knew he was gonna regress big time, everyone except our stud GM.

I'd rather have Lowe who gives up less walks but pitches to groundball contact than a guy who gets more strikeouts but walks more guys and gives up longballs.

Groundball pitcher at Wrigley Field. Sounds good to me.

Hendry's been reasonably good with the trades, so, no, I don't see the need to be paying someone new and paying Hendry to not have a job. This simply is not the ideal time to bring in a new GM until there's more payroll room.

For the price though, I'd rather have Dempster. Although, I would rather not have either one.
