The Howard home run was the first pitch I saw of todays game. I decided to forego watching the first part of the game and watch Game 2 of the 89 NLCS. After feeling happy about the Cubs I flip to the game and see that it's still 0-0. Then bam back into present day Cub gloom. No more hiding in one of a handful of truely happy Cubs memories.

Btw it's really hilarious that they make an 8 game box set of great Cubs games. In it they include:

-The first Cubs playoff game in 39 years, a victory in a series that ultimately ends in epic collapse

-The Sandberg game (a worthy edition)

-A random regular season game in 1987 meant to showcase the first MVP to play on a last place team.

-The only playoff victory in a series where we got destroyed in 5 games

-Kerry Woods 20k game (another worthy game)

-A disgraced slugger cheating his way into a record tying hr, a chase that he would ultimately finish 2nd in, and later 3rd

-The 300th victory for a pitcher who is beloved by Cubs fans although he spent more years with another team and will wear that teams hat in the HOF

-Finally a random regular season game meant to showcase the great season by Derrek Lee. The game though is more enjoyable to watch because of John Koranka starting it, and Enrique Wilson and Neifi Perez batting 1-2 in the order. Hilarious

How many other teams could put together an 8 disc set of worse Memorable Games than that?

Sure glad we have the guy that everyone in their right minds saw regressing this year instead of that Lowe guy in ATL.

More great GM'ing by Hendry.

Dempster has been better than Lowe this year.

Enjoy running away with the division and never looking back Red Birds. You have a manager and a GM who wanted to win and they made it happen.

As opposed to Jim Henry and Lou Piniella deciding that having another .500 season while missing the playoffs in heartbreaking fashion would be just dandy?

The Cubs are doing poorly because Lou Piniella and Jim Hendry think it's funny.

2 things:

That's all it takes?

Hendry and Lou don't want to win? Set aside their obvious faults....you're saying they prefer losing?

Z, Ted, and Aramis aren't really even hurt.

And it's not even close. But I still would've signed Lowe. He might be the perfect Wrigley pitcher.

Well the good news is at least we'll probably get some much needed changes in the offseason starting with the GM.

Keep thinking that.

Like I brought up in another thread, the new owners are unlikely to fire the GM when there's likely next to no payroll flexibility in the offseason. Why hire someone new if they can't do anything about the mess they inherit?

Well, it prevents the current GM for prolonging this mess. He's already tied up a ton of money for the next couple years. Keeping him around gives him the opportunity to mess up the years beyond that.

I do agree though that Hendry will most likely be back.

Why would Hendry have money to spend? He'd have his hands tied just as much by the all but frozen payroll the same as his replacement would.

If the purse strings are tightened, correct, the damage he could do would be minimal. If they aren't, get him the hell out of there.

it's really funny you say that because the last few years all I hear from cards fans is that the cards never make any moves and despite hendrys shortcoming at least he wants to win.

Too bad they didn't have cameras when we were really good. Although King Kelly would have been less effective with cameras stopping him from cutting accross the diamond.

Yep.

Dempster: 4.04 ERA, 1.386 WHIP, 99:48 K:BB

Lowe: 4.08 ERA, 1.407 WHIP, 79:49 K:BB

Plus, Lowe is 36 and Dempster is 32. And Dempster is cheaper.

The Dwight Smith game is more memorable than a lot of those games.

Sure, but my point is that it's redundant to hire someone new for the time being if there's no money to spend. It wasn't an argument in favor of keeping Hendry if that's not the case.

Dempster's better than Lowe, Lowe's older, and signed for more money.

Of course you take Derek Lowe.

You don't keep a guy that you're planning on getting rid of before you're a contender again. You bring in the GM that you want to rebuild as soon as you can.
