Well, we definitely gotta sweep the Pirates and we need some help from anyone playing the Cards and Rockies to climb back in this.

At this point, not gettting swept by the Pirates would be kinda surprising. This "team" is laughable right now.

If only even just a fraction of all the promises to give up were true.

Not sure if that was directed at me, but I can say that I understand some of the disgust over the doom & gloom that is pronounced here almost every day. Speaking for myself, I DO get "down" within gamethreads, but mostly it's me being sarcastic/tongue-in-cheek. Sometimes I do a poor job of relating that in my posts. I seriously haven't given up on the season. I DO give up on certain games, because this team has been so frustrating this year. But as far as the season goes, I think any rational poster here would agree that a fully healthy team could still make a serious run at the post-season. And if we can sneak in, anything is possible...

Not really directed at you, more in general to those that seemingly bemoan the being a Cubs fan more often than not.

As someone who has not yet given up, there has been a lot to moan about this year.

what money issue am i exactly dancing around here?

i already asked how much hendry is making since it isn't up on Cot's...however...he is signed through 2012...so keeping him around for one more season is almost as stupid as letting him go at the end of this season by your reasoning

The money issue of the Cubs likely having little to no payroll flexibility this upcoming offseason and through 2010. I'm not talking about that in terms of affording a new GM: I'm talking about in terms of no GM, Hendry or otherwise, having the means to make significant changes. It's arguably redundant to fire Hendry just to fire him when whoever replaces him won't have the means to change anything. Why not wait to fire Hendry until there is more payroll and whoever replaces him can actually do something?

Any real fans arent going to give up. After all of these years, I dont think one mediocre season is going to make or break that. Most of the 2003 bandwagoners bailed between 2005-2006. The 2008 bandwagoners are probably jumping ship though.

Very true, which is why the "why am I a Cubs fan?!?" crying over and over again is such a pet peeve. It either means they're a short term bandwagoner or they're just being annoyingly hysterical and and melodramatic ad nauseum. It gets to a point where it's baffling why some people here claim to be Cubs fans since seemingly all they do is complain about being one.

I say BHogg gets the gamethread for Fridays game...whos with me?

how much violence and / or nudity is allowed in a game thread?

The interwebs may not have enough to get the Cubs out of this funk. . . . . . .

If I were to do a game thread, tomorrow's is all I could do. . . I'm heading out of town and couldn't be relied on for the remainder of the weekend.

again, i never said a new GM would be able to make significant changes on the major league roster, but he would be able to have a new line of thought and a say so on the younger kids

hell, maybe he can even pull off trades better than hendry

And once again, you're overstating/estimating the GM's role in those areas, and even if you weren't the Cubs' drafts and farm system have looked much better over the last 2-3 years.

hell, maybe he can even pull off trades better than hendry

Maybe, but that's one area Hendry has been reasonably strong in which means it wouldn't be a bad idea at all to hold onto him until the payroll can be expanded.

I'm just saying we need to look at this realistically: if the payroll can't be expanded then replacing Hendry isn't something that needs to happen this offseason if the Cubs fail to make the playoffs. It would just be change for change's sake. If Hendry actually was "a bottom 5 GM" as some here love to repeat, fine, there would be some urgency even with a limited or frozen payroll, but he's not so there really isn't since anyone replacing him would have their hands tied.

ok...if i am overestimating/overstating a GM's role...then please give me a layout as to exactly what they do because if all they do is dick around with the major league squad...i would imagine they would have a load of free time on their hands

I had a 9-game win streak last year.... perhaps I could try to reclaim some of the magic?

No disrespect to you, and definitely none to the GTP, but I dont think we really need any mojo to take care of the Pirates.

Im not going to lie, there are times that I wish I could just make it go away, or at least block out the next month and see how were doing in mid september, but I just cant. Its like family. No matter how much they screw me over or dissapoint, I keep coming back.

With the way this team is playing, we'd need mojo to take care of a Little League team.

A very broad summary, but it works:

don't know who the hell this guy is, but what he is saying is lining up more with what i originally thought the GM did...which is more than you guys are saying they do...
