Can we send Marmol to the minors?

He might just be pressing too hard and instead of just pitching he's trying too hard to throw a strike. This season he's been more erratic than he's been the last few years and if the Cub's make the postseason they NEED him to figure it out. I just can't fathom how someone that has that good of stuff can just lose the strike zone so easily.

I think hes out of options. Either way, I dont think that thats the answer. The answer might be to put him into some lower pressure situations and put Guz in the set up role for a while.

Marmol isn't out of options (he has one remaining) but he must be placed on Optional Assignment Waivers before he can be optioned to the minors (that means any team can claim him but then the Cubs have the right to withdraw Marmol from waivers). Of course he's very likely to be claimed by another team so it's unlikely he'd make it to the minors.

Normally I would agree, but I hate the thought of having to bump both Heilman and Shark (if he isn't option back to the minors) into roles there are not suited for.

I wouldn't do anything just yet after just 2 outings. He very well may find it again. Remember that before the last two nights, Marmol had walked 1 man combined in his last 6 outings (spanning 6 1/3 innings) and hadn't walked more than 1 in an inning since June 26th.

I'd make sure not to bring him in with runners on for a couple games, but other than that I'd wait him out in his regular role for his next streak of good control.

You are all nuts. Yes, he walks too many guys, but he makes up for it by not allowing hits. As someone else mentioned, he's been much better lately at not walking as many guys. He only walked 6 guys since June 26 (15ip) until the Marlins series. He's fine where he is. Marmol at his worst is still better than most of the options we currently have.

Most are nuts, but TT's right. He should still have outstanding value after the season and if we can net a good return for him, I'm all for trading a guy with his control issues.

Brenly's a good analyst but what he said last night (and what this thread mainly says) about him going to the minors is ridiculous. So you're going to send him to the minors when you already have bullpen issues? I'm curious to see whoever in Iowa is more dependable than Marmol. I'm sure there's guys with better control but I haven't really been impressed with any of the relievers we've called up from Iowa this year. Yes I realize Marmol can't throw strikes consistently but the good far outweighs the bad, in my opinion.

He makes you sick to your stomach at times, but more often than not, he gets the job done. Honestly, I'm not really concerned about our bullpen even though they had a rough weekend.

In 52 IP, he has 49 BB, 3 IBB, 10 HPB, and 29 hits. No matter how you slice it, that is not good and I reckon there's somebody in the minors that can do better than allowing close to 2 guys on base for every 3 outs they record.

I want to trade Marmol this offseason pretty badly.

Although he has been a heartattack this year, I'm nowhere near ready to give up on him yet. He was an all start last year and arguably a top 5 bullpen guy in the entire league.

Something is going on with his mechanics/head or some combination of the two. Maybe somehow it's still residual effect from the WBC or maybe Lou/Larry should dust out the ole' video machine and compare arm angles/release points from this year to last.

I understand the value of trading him 'high', but this guy isn't just potential we are hoping pans out as he has proven he can be one of the very best pitchers in the majors. We just need to figure out how to get back to that point.

The guy has thrown too many pitches in the last several years in my opinion. As much as the Cubs have used him combined with him pitching in the DR league in the offseason and then the WBC, I'm suprised he hasn't had more problems with his arm this season. He has become independently wealthy by pitching for the Cubs. I'd like to see him do what is the best for the team and rest his arm a little bit in the offseason....I'm not necessarily blaming his control problems on overuse as one would think that loss of velocity, not problems with control would be the primary symptom of overuse..this is just more of a rant I guess. Please rest your arm in the offseason. Thanks.
