I am very disappointed in Stone. I really though the passage of time would allow him to get over himself. Guess his ego is much bigger than that.

I could care less about his ego. The problem is that he's ten times the baseball announcer than anyone in the Cubs booth, both the TV and radio side.

I don't want to be friends with him, I just want a quality baseball broadcast.

Why is your opinion always wrong?

I've been around Cubs fans all my life. I find it odd that nobody had these things to say about Steve Stone prior to September of 2004.

I'm not quite as anti-Stone as some here, but it's worth noting that he wasn't acting like a bitch towards the Cubs franchise prior to September of 2004.

Precisely. Nobody had anything bad to say about Michael Vick before the dogfighting stuff came out, either.

Seems to me that somewhere along the line, Stone got his sensitive feathers ruffled, and ever since he's had a juvenile and vindictive attitude towards the Cubs organization. IMO it is unprofessional and a very valid reason for someone to change their opinion of the guy.

I'm 30 and I honestly was not a fan of the Cubs' TV broadcasting as far back as I can remember. Stone just seemed like smarmy white noise and Harry was a slobbering oaf. Harry I'll give the credit to that in his younger, healthier days (most of which were before I can remember since even in 1984 he would go from pro to sloshed by about halfway through the game) was an excellent PBP guy. Stone always struck me as being a snot and didn't know [expletive].

He stated Stone is better than A N Y O N E in the tv/radio booth. It could not be any clearer. You've got a funny way of making a point...

I lived down in C'dale for over ten years - what are you smoking? Can you get me some?

I'm not defending him at all, I know what he said. I'm not blind. You used Len and Pat as an example though when you should have used Ron and Bob to compare Stone because Stone's job description is the same as Brenly's and Santo's. I know what you're saying and I know what he's saying.

May Bob Brenly make your death long and painful.

stone sucks guys.

I like Brenly more, and wouldn't trade him for Stone, but Steve does not suck as an analyst. He isn't god's gift to color commentary as some claim, but he is, at the very least, very good at his job.

I do find it funny that very little of this Steve Stone hate was to be heard before the 2004 drama. I think people's distaste over Stone's titanic ego and borderline obsession with the Cubs has clouded their opinion of his work.

Wrong. I merely responded to his claim. If you've got a problem, take it up with the poster who made the initial comparison.

As an "announcer" you can compare Stone's abilities to any "announcer" in sports if you desire. If we're comparing PBP guys it's a different story...

That may be, but whether he is or he isn't doesn't change his work that he did in the booth for the team. If he rips the team now, that doesn't change his performance in the booth all those years for us. It just seems that suddenly now that he has a grudge against the Cubs, he was a bad color man for all those years, and that simply is not the case.

i thought he was a great because i basically grew up listening to him. harry and stone were as much a part of the cubs to me as any player, if not more so. once he left, i realized i didn't miss him, and len and bob were just fine. and now when i hear him do sox games, i'm not particularly impressed with him. on top of all that, add to the fact that he's a whiney douche, and i'm completely happy he's not with the cubs.

Id trade Brenly for Stone anytime, I loved Stone he and Harry were my favorite broadcast team of all time.

Ditto, Rocket. To me, Harry and Steve were part of the experience. When harry died, Steve was my link back to him. I didn't think the expereince - the joy and pain of being a Cub fan - could be the same without them. Of course, I was wrong, too. However, I will say this: Stone's criticizm of Dusty was waranted and he was generally a straight-shooter in that way. The really nasty stuff came later after he left.

I don't quite get much announcers seem to affect people's enjoyment of the broadcasts. Outside of Ron Santo, I can't think of any that were good or bad enough to make me notice much.

Harry, definitely, for me. I grew up with Brickhouse, and became a hopeless Cub fan with Harry. Santo's great, but he came much later for me.

One of the articles today states that Detroit scouts have been following the Cubs recently. If not Bradley, who exactly are they scouting? Fox? Baker? Blanco? Hoffpauir? I don't really see the Cubs moving any pieces of their major league ball club at this point, which makes me wonder if their are legs to Stoney's original rumor.

What is recently? We played them just a month ago June 23-25 I believe, some hack journalist might have remembered seeing Tigers scouts at games in early June and saw the reports yesterday about MB and decided to put something together about scouts at games. It has been known for a while now that the Tigers are looking for another bat, and don't have a great amount of money to spend so maybe it is just Hoffpauir or Fox.

Recently was this weekend and last week. I will try to locate the article and post a link. I agree with you though, if it was prior to June 23, no big deal, but I think the fact that they were recently (last several games) scouting the Cubs is significant.

Joe Carter, Dave Otto, Joe Morgan, Buck and McCarver, Hawk Harrelson...

Bruce Levine said in his blog that Detroit was there scouting this weekend. However, who knows if they were scouting the Cubs or the Reds.

I haven't heard a lot of Harrelson, but none of the others bother me. Sure, they say some dumb things, but I can just tune them out.

The only reason Santo bothers me is because Hughes plays along with his schtick and loses track of the game.

The whole Nats TV team can go on that list. Brutal. I had to listen to them for one of the games of the Cubs series.
