Tigers intrested in MB (Silly Steve Stone Rumor)

I am very disappointed in Stone. I really though the passage of time would allow him to get over himself. Guess his ego is much bigger than that.

I could care less about his ego. The problem is that he's ten times the baseball announcer than anyone in the Cubs booth, both the TV and radio side.

I don't want to be friends with him, I just want a quality baseball broadcast.

I used to think so, but I don't miss him anymore

My thoughts exactly, especially during the Joe Carter days.

You didn't like hearing about Delino being stuck in the a-hole?

I disagree. I've never liked him, and I'd much rather listen to Len or Pat...

The Cubs have arguably the best TV broadcast in baseball right now, while the Sox TV broadcast(which includes Stone) might be the worst. I know you hate the Cubs and don't think they do anything right, but ripping the TV broadcast is just stupid. Len and Bob are top notch.

he said "showing signs of life"

yes and he also said "struggling" and referenced other players who "struggled" early in their careers at Wrigley. Having an OBP at .350 or whatever Milton's was for most of the season isn't what people are talking about when they say "struggling". When talking about the other players struggling at Wrigley, you think they are talking about "taking less walks"?? He also referenced "turning things around". Milton's OBP isn't something that people would look to and say "damn, he sucks! he needs to turn that around!" Of course not, they are talking about his abysmal hitting and lack of power. I can't recall many posters on here bitching about Milton's lack of patience at the plate or anything like that. If damn near everything you read about Milton is that "he can't hit and hasn't given us much power", then it is a logical assumption to think when someone talks about him "turning things around" that they are talking about him actually hitting the ball.

i can't believe you're actually this dense, so I'm assuming you're still trying to cover your ass.

in milton bradley's specific case, he is showing signs of life by upping his OBP and OPS. What do you call it when a player reaches base 43 percent of the time and raises his OPS .40 points over the previous month? struggling? just give it up, you're making a fool of yourself.

I will give this to Stone. He taught me that a slider low and away with two strikes will likely get the hitter out. Other than that, I've got no use for him.

I thought the guy was psychic when I was 10 years old watching him, the way he could predict that low and away pitch on an 0 and 2 count. Now I realize that he's just like John Madden was as an announcer. He's Mr. Obvious.

Anyone notice how often Hawk complains about the umpires' strike zones (when its unfavorable for the Sox) and Stoney has felt compelled to "agree" with Hawk regularly.

Stone's commentary is much like that of any athlete. He WAS fresh and compelling early on. But he peaked a while back and is on the downside of his "career".

SCREW HIM!!!

ya nice try. i'm not arguing that milton isn't contributing more. the stats support that, so don't act like I don't understand the vast importance of ops and obp.

this argument isn't about what I believe as regards Milton being more productive as of late, it's about what I assumed the POSTER was talking about. considering that milton had just hit a pinch hit HR and considering his language about "struggling" and referencing other players struggling, I figured he was talking about Milton's bat turning around...which IS what most people have been desiring Milton to do all year. getting on base hasn't been all that much of a problem for him all year.

again, you are positioning this as concerning what i personally believe to constitute productivity. this isn't about me, it's about what i thought the POSTER was talking about, which was Milton's actual bat.

you can have the last post if you want, i'm done wasting my time on you.

Stoney can't let it go. From his twitter:

first this -

"To all the people who believe who believe that david kaplan and i made up the bradley story---get a life. Trade deadline rumors are not new."

then

"The giants need a hitter to make a run at the wildcard. Word out is that the nats nick johnson might fill their needs. Chase that down bruce"

Johnson to the Giants rumor has ONLY been around for about a month. Thanks Mr. Obvious.

Uh, ok? Stone's an analyst, not a PBP guy. I'd still take Stone over Brenly, and that's not a slight against Bob.

It sucks how his tenure with the Cubs ended and he has every right to be bitter at the Cubs organization. Wouldn't you be bitter towards a former boss of yours if you spent close to a decade working with that organization before being forced out for basically telling the truth about what was going on?

I like announcers that tell it like it is. Brenly seems like he has his favorites (Theriot, Fontenot, etc) while others like Soriano can do no right. Stay consistent.

Arnie, what's it like to always be wrong? Stone brings nothing to the table, man

I'm fine with the current TV booth but Stone's still a great analyst, IMO.

I just ignore the whole 'big ego' point because almost everyone involved in professional sports has an attitude like that.

Stone's knowledge of the game is below average. This precludes him from being a good analyst.

This. Stone was hassled because he was right. That whole matter was on Dusty and his band of idiots, not on Stone. He did his job. I have been a Cubs fan since about '88 or so, and Stone told it like it was. If they were playing well, he said so. If they were lousy, he said so.

I remember a game against Colorado in 2000 or 2002 or so when he was in the radio booth for a while and the Cubs were in the midst of a terrible slump. The Cubs were getting killed, making stupid mistakes and not learning from them, and Stone just went OFF in the booth. He openly ripped the team and chided their stupid play. I was impressed that he had the stones to tell it like it was, to say what every other Cubs fan was probably thinking at that point.

Stone quit, he wasnt fired. Bruce said so the other day that it was Stones own decision to leave. With that said, I like Len and Bob, over Stone. Yea Brenly has his favorites, but I disagree that Soriano can do no right in his eyes. He is hard on Soriano, but Sori brings most of that on himself at times. Hell just listen to todays game, and Brenly was gushing over Soriano going to RF today.

Stone is just unbearable to listen to. He loves hearing himself talk, and thinks he knows everything there is to know about the game of baseball.

I've been around Cubs fans all my life. I find it odd that nobody had these things to say about Steve Stone prior to September of 2004.

I'm not quite as anti-Stone as some here, but it's worth noting that he wasn't acting like a bitch towards the Cubs franchise prior to September of 2004.

That may be, but whether he is or he isn't doesn't change his work that he did in the booth for the team. If he rips the team now, that doesn't change his performance in the booth all those years for us. It just seems that suddenly now that he has a grudge against the Cubs, he was a bad color man for all those years, and that simply is not the case.

I agree; however, the comment made was that Stone is a better announcer than ANYONE in the Cubs radio or tv booth. I enjoyed the entirety of Stone's stay on the Northside and had zero problems with him calling out the Cubs. I always found him to be a pompous turd, though...

He stated Stone is better than A N Y O N E in the tv/radio booth. It could not be any clearer. You've got a funny way of making a point...

I lived down in C'dale for over ten years - what are you smoking? Can you get me some?
