Seriously what the hell? How do things like this slip through everyone and get on the air (the NASCAR commercial I mean)

Sometimes I think they just want to give material to places like deadspin to see if they catch it.

I know nothing of the broadcasting business, but I have to imagine it would be quite difficult to break this type of news, and in a matter of seconds/minutes check on what your first commercial is and change it if innappropriate.

I guess so. It's just such an odd coincidence that I feel like it could have somehow been avoided.

Hit and run drivers should receive a mandatory jail sentence every time. If a person is killed as a result it should be deemed murder one.

I have no sympathy or tolerance for hit and run drivers.I hope they throw the book at him.

I don't know the laws in California but I am sure this waste of space will be in Jail for an awful long time.

He did kill three people as of now with a fourth in the hospital. I'm pretty sure he's completely screwed.

I assume he will likely be charged with something like depraved heart murder, which is essentially 2nd degree murder. It's at the very least vehicular manslaughter, but if he was drinking then it will be murder.

CNN is reporting the driver will be charged with manslaughter, felony driving under the influence and hit-and-run. Charges could bumped up to second-degree murder.

I'd love to see a law in which a drunken driving death results in a mandatory life sentence.

I wouldn't go that far, if only because of our country's stupid liquor laws, which practically forces those 18-21 to go off and hide when they drink, which contributes to them driving in dangerous situations. Also, if the death is that of another drunk driver, or a passenger that willingly got into a car with a drunk driver, I wouldn't want it to be a life sentence. But these people are such habitual repeat offenders, I do think it needs to be much harsher than it is now.

Man, on sportscenter they just mentioned that his dad watched him pitch last night and then got the call this morning that he'd been killed. How [expletive] brutal must that phone call have been? Must be heartbreaking to see your kid reach those heights and then lose him less than 24 hours later.

Apparently it wasn't his first Drunk Driving offense either...

I can maybe see your side of the argument. I still disagree, though. However, the drunk driver that killed Nick Adelhart was 22.

DUI punishments (for just a general DUI) are definitely too lax imo. In most states it takes a third offense to really get in serious, serious trouble. A first offense in most places is usually a lose of license for 90 days, or less, depending on the judge and other circumstances. I'd prefer to see us go in a more hardline route such as in Germany where a first offense is usually a lose of the license for a year (travel for work being the exception).

There are a lot of ways to look at that. When you're under .10 there have been a lot of conflicting studies as to how impaired you truly are. Generally can fall in the same line with those eating while driving or talking a cell phone. Even less than people who are driving on very little sleep willingly. How do we punish all of those people?

What about cell phone related accidents? Accidents caused by someone texting while driving? Do all of these people lose their license for a year?

There's quite a difference between a habitual offender or someone driving at .18+ and someone who had 3 beers with a meal and is right at/slightly above the legal limit.

Word is this guy had a suspended license.

Suspended license. Previous arrest for drunk driving. Going 80+ on what looks like a city street with a speed limit probably no more than 50 MPH. Blowing a red light. Causing an accident. Killing 3 people in that accident. Running from the scene. Ticketed for suspicion of drunk driving all = life in prison in my book.

There is absolutely zero reason this guy should ever be allowed to walk the streets again, let alone drive.

True, and I completely agree with you, but as one of my professors noted, stricter regulations might not deter people who are already risking their own life and the lives of others by choosing to drive drunk. If you're dumb and drunk enough to drive under the influence in the first place, you're probably not thinking logically about consequences anyway.
