If it is a salary situation and we needed to get the $$ for Bradley, so be it. We are in a tough economy and the Trib is bankrupt. Money does matter. I would understand that.

It is exceedingly easy for us to spend other people's money.

I'm sorry, but it just doesn't make sense to get rid of DeRosa (a positive in the clubhouse from what we see and hear) to make room for Bradley (a great addition with high injury risk). I just don't think any GM would make that move.

I still think this is making room for something bigger. Like Peavy.

DeRosa is going to be missed. It better be for something that makes the Cubs better now - which seems to be what has been going on the past couple years.

It doesn't seem like the major league ready pitching the Padres wanted. So I dunno about this deal anymore, these prospects all have good upside, and good talent. But when were trying to win next year, this move looks bad unless it's gonna lead to something else. All I'm gonna say is trading Marquis/DeRosa to get Vizcaino, Miles and propsects, better lead to something more then just Milton Bradley. We better be getting another quality everyday player, or good to very good SP at some point. Otherwise I'll start to agree with people that this is looking like a bad offseason. But right now(with a ton of guys on the market still) I confidence that many of these moves, are just setting up the Cubs for a big one.

Also the Gaithright signing doesn't make much sense unless Hendry is setting up the trade of Pie to Baltimore for Olsen. All the things that supposedly had to be done to make the Peavy trade work seem to be there so it would be very strange for it not to be leading up to that. The Padres still need to move him and I have not heard about any new teams in the mix.

This deal only makes sense if we are to acquire Peavy. I like Bradley but again we would be weakening our offense by trading DeRo to upgrade it a bit by signing Bradley. I'm not sold on Fontenot being the answer at 2B. To those that are sold on Fontenot this deal makes sense.

Fontenot has had roughly 500 ABs worth of major league success. He also has a very good minor league track record. What else does he have to do for people to be sold on him?

It makes perfect sense. Hendry's not a dumb guy. He knows that with Fontenot and DeRosa at 2B we have two guys who are essentially the same entity. We can only play one of them. He knows that the Cubs are worse off than their win total from last year so he's trying to manuever his way around to get them to be the best they can be. He knows that he has very little wiggle room in the payroll and couldn't afford to keep Wood for ten mil. He thought Gregg would be a good addition so got the cheapest bullpen alternative. I disagree with getting Gregg and would have tried something else, but I see what he is doing.

Now he knows that we got a ton of production from center last season. He knows Edmonds and Johnson aren't likely to repeat it, so he know he doesn't want to go into 2009 with the same setup in center. He figures Johnson isn't too expensive, can play all the outfield positions and hits lefties well and is worth keeping around as a fourth or fifth outfielder. He also knows that Fukudome is probably an immovable contract after the 2008 season. He knows that replacing the CF position and getting decent production via the FA market or trade market will probably be out of his price range. So he says well we can get close production at the corners at a cheaper rate. Fukudome, despite being slotted in right, can play center. Let's move him there and look at corner outfielders and do what we can. He sees that he can sign Bradley at a discount due to health concerns and replace the production in center a third of the time or so (the 33% chance or so Bradley stays healthy) and varying quantities of it the other two-thirds of the time. He thinks that this is the best bet he has to try to replace the production and make the team the best he can. The 9 or 10 mil it costs to add Bradley this year is a bit more than he can spend without moving contracts. He sees Marquis and Marshall. He sees that they are the same entity. He trades Marquis to dump some salary and pushes Marshall into the rotation. He sees DeRosa and Fontenot. They're close to the same entity as well. He trades DeRosa to dump some salary and pushes Fontenot into the 2B slot. He's now saved enough money to sign Bradley and finalize the deal and replace production out of center the best he can. The rest of it can be made up in the form of Fukudome hitting better than he did last season.

Simple, he needs to be another teams prospect and he'll be loved here.

Play at least average defense at 2b is one thing and can he sustain his success from last year throughout an entire season. I don't think he can.

but he's kind of an orioles prospect so that loophole shouldn't apply.

Heres Roto's take..I agree that theres something up money wise and we couldve gotten a better return..

Perhaps the Cubs are having bigger money woes than anyone knows. There's no standout from this group, and although DeRosa will probably never again duplicate his 2008 performance, we're surprised he didn't command more than this.

With the addition of DeRo, the Indians now have the prettiest team in all of Baseball. We have officially gained the female fanbase.

Could DeRo hit leadoff? I'd really like to see Sizemore moved down in the lineup. But, I doubt that will happen.

So, this is the potential Indians' lineup for now:

Sizemore

DeRo

Martinez

Hafner

Peralta

Garko

Choo

Francisco

Cabrera

Although, the 3-4-5 spots could go any which way, and Choo could make a case for the three spot if he hits like he did at the end of last year.

Can we have Zambrano too, please?

The more and more I read about these prospects, the less and less I consider them viable options in a Peavy trade. I don't think this is Peavy related...

Potentially the cutest top 2 in the history of baseball?

Would have been nice to get Huff in such a trade.

What is Jim Hendry doing?

Failing miserably at his job, like usual.

So, nothing in the long post above seems likely as an answer?
