It would seem kind of silly to build a team around power when you play half your games in Petco.

From a Ken Rosenthal article earlier this month:

Padres GM Kevin Towers says the team eventually plans to move in the fences at Petco Park. "I'm even for it now," Towers said. "Right field is Death Valley." Towers recalled that the team signed Ryan Klesko long-term believing that left-handed power hitters would perform well at Petco. "It's been the polar opposite," Towers said.

That seems like an odd thought process when your stadium was "Barry-proofed."

Yeah, I'm not sure how they thought a lefty slugger would thrive there.

Adrian Gonzalez is quite a good lefty slugger and even he had a pedestrian .788 OPS there last year.

The Padres are into "sluggers"? That seems to effectively take Theriot off the list.

Very few teams, if any, solely go after one type of player. You can be into sluggers while at the same type being open to having Theriot-type players at SS.

Who is looking for players with absolutely no power and little range at their positions?

Theriot has value as a very cheap player who provides decent to pretty good OBP from SS and can passably play the position. Just don't green light him on the bases and you should be ok.

...and I'm not a Theriot fan, at all.

Considering Peavy has no trade rights and only two teams are interested to trade for him that he would waive his right for, Josh Vitters, Wellington Castillo and Sean Marshall is a good package for the Padres IMO. Vitters is good.

Especially if you consider that maybe, just maybe, Peavy has no desire to go to Atlanta but is cooperating with SD in using them (along with Towers and Axelrod and the relationship Towers claims they all have) in getting them to get as much as they can from the Cubs, which doesn't stand to be very much in the first place. They're a convenient team to use as they're somewhat close to his home town (which still makes little sense to me - any town is a few hour plane ride away... it's not like he can live in his real home town and commute to Atlanta for home games)....

I'm obviously not claiming to know anything. Just brainstorming.

It would explain Atlanta's frustrations with wondering why the hell nothing is getting done.

Teams with payroll issues are looking for guys who can provide adequate performance at their position for little money. That is Theriot, for now. Pretty soon he'll be making millions and be a complete waste.

According to Rosenthal:

The Padres again have asked the Braves to revise their proposal for right-hander Jake Peavy, requesting that the team substitute Single-A catcher Tyler Flowers for Single-A center fielder Gorkys Hernandez, according to major-league sources.

I guess Flowers is destroying the Fall League right now, and Rosenthal is unsure they would want to trade him.

The Cubs and Padres, meanwhile, continue to discuss the same list of six to eight names from which the Padres would choose in a deal for Peavy. The Padres then would have the option of spinning one or more of those players to other clubs.

Eventually, being the key word. Moores isn't going to pare down payroll nearly in half and then turn around and spend a significant portion of that money to bring in the fences. And when the attendance decreases to half of what it was this year, it will be hard for Moores to justify doing it the next year even if his divorce becomes final.

This team is really screwed right now.

The recent treatment of Trevor Hoffman isn't going to sit well, either. Granted, most Padres fans probably could care less if Hoffman ever wears a Padres uniform again. But, this is a guy whose whole HOF career was basically as a Padre, and parting on such angry terms can't be looked at as a good thing.

Rotoworld's take

According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, the Padres have decided they prefer Tyler Flowers to Gorkys Hernandez as the second player in a Jake Peavy deal.

Yunel Escobar would be the top property acquired by San Diego. Flowers over Hernandez is interesting. If Flowers were a solid defensive catcher, he'd be a definite top-30 prospect at this point. However, he fits best at first base and the Padres shouldn't need help there anytime soon. Hernandez doesn't have nearly the same offensive potential as Flowers, but he projects as an excellent defensive center fielder. He'd seem to be the better option for San Diego.

On one of the Braves boards I was reading that they don't want to give up Esobar and Flowers they would prefer just giving up one of them in a deal. You have to think the Braves are getting frustrated and you have to wonder if they might pull out of this deal and pursue other starting pitchers like Grienke, Cain or some of the FA.

I find it hard to believe that cost is any factor in the decision to bring the fences in at Petco.

IIRC the Wrigley drainage/leveling/resodding project only cost a few million.

that was my thought, too, especially since the wrigley renovations would seem to be far more expensive and time-consuming.

Really? More expensive than dealing with permanent left field and right field bleachers, and not just one level, mind you.

I doubt they'd have to do much of anything to the structure itself.

right, it's not like they'd be moving fences back, needing to do something about seats. If they move fences in , say, 10-15 feet (I have no real idea), what really needs to be done other than moving the walls.

Okay, show of hands...who has refreshed this thread more than 10 times today? 100 times?

 Guilty as charge.

Every time I leave I hope when I get back there are significant (more the 10 pages) pages added to the thread, but alas maybe one or two pages is added. Oh well.

This is really starting to feel like the Roberts thread. Everybody is just kind of hanging around rehashing the same stuff and waiting for something new. Sucks

If you give an MLB owner another 10-15 feet of space where you can put extra seating, they're probably going to take advantage of that. I think they would probably alter the lower bleachers so they could add a few more rows, but the extra ticket sales would probably pay for that over time.

Your only going to have extra ticket sales if you are selling out games and then increase your ticket sales. I don't think they are or will be the next couple of years.
