Why would he approve a trade to a bad team when he could easily force his way onto a contender? He knows very well that SD ownership is in disarray right now and is in the midst of a firesale.

I don't really buy the close to home stuff.

The Pads are talking to one very, very good team in a very attractive market. It may or may not work, but they want more value than is being offered by Cubs/Braves.

I think he's saying what he needs to say to help the ownership get him shipped to where he wants to go, rather than sticking around for another year on a crappy team before getting inevitably traded anyways.

That said, I could see how he might think Atlanta could be in a position to contend in '10 or '11 (with a couple of good moves and a little bit of luck), and be interested in going there. Kind of like '91.

Haha, I just read Dolan's newest post on the trade rumor on his blog and he quoted me on it!

I've been reading Desipio for 5 years and never thought I'd be so honored (although in the post he's ripping me and others who commented on his rumor big time, but I'll just have to overlook that)

I like that he posted about how everyone's whining that his rumor didn't happen, and in the post looked like the biggest pisser and moaner of all, complete with insults that would make Bill Plaschke proud. Or mabye Desipio endorser Paul Sullivan!!

Dolan kind of sounds like a big whiner. He's basically complaining about a rumor not dying on an internet message board. Not only that, but a CUBS internet message board. Consider what it takes to be a Cubs fan to begin with, it's amazing how someone can complain about possibly overzealous optimism on a freaking message board. I've never really read Desipio much (not because I thought it was bad or anything, I just never took the time to do it), but that entry gave me the impression that his blog is pretty petty.

I wish Raisin had posted a little while earlier. :x

yeah, but as a couple others said previously, what do we expect Donnie to do to "prove" his legitimacy? What photo or explanation is clear, legitimizing, and not fakeable.

This is not an actual attack on Donnie -- he seems more well-spoken and intelligent than most people I suspect are trolling with rumors -- I just don't see how he's planning to prove anything

He got you with that Zima, eHarmony, and chubby girls line.

I had to spit the Zima out of my mouth and quickly click off eHarmony when I read that line...I thought he was watching me or something.

And yes, he did look like the biggest pisser and moaner. I still have a lot of respect for Andy as a writer, but boy have his posts taken a negative attacking tone over the last 12-18 months.

So, you've been ripped by Andy Dolan and his massive ego. Welcome to the club.

mlbtraderumors:

Gordon Wittenmyer talked to his sources and agrees with Lou Piniella's indication that the Cubs are not serious about Jake Peavy. Wittenmyer believes San Diego sources were putting the Cubs rumors out there to drive up the price. He says the Cubs are focused on acquiring an athletic lefthanded hitter this winter.

Wittenmyer says Raul Ibanez, Jeremy Hermida, and Brian Roberts remain on the radar. The latest word on Hermida is that the Marlins will need to be "wowed" to move him.

And you guys are stroking his ego by talking about him on every page.

Why can't we if he talks about us in every blog entry? It's mutual stroking :)

For the record, as I said I have no problem with Dolan, even if he attacks things I say. I do think his generalization of certain parts of NSBB and specific posters (vance, Hoops, etc) is unfair, but thats part of his writing style. I called him a "fading star" because the man never posts entries anymore. His writing is still sharp as ever, but lets face it, you don't post much and people tend to forget you.

Duh. I got myself sucked into the rumors a bit, but as many of us said, it was definitely very likely Hendry helped Towers out by floating trade rumors between them out there.

Yeah, I don't believe that for a second. Wittenmeyer is a big time hack

So let me get this straight.....his "sources" are just now coming out and telling him that the Cubs weren't serious about getting Peavy? Why now? Why hasn't anyone else heard this? The sources must have been swon to secrecy by Jim Hendyr to not reveal his masterful plan to help Towers. I guess one of them accidentaly slip when the great Gordon Wittenmeyer asked him about it. "Hey, I read that quote from Piniella...is he just playing dumb or was the Cubs interest in Peavy phony?" "Yeah, they were never interested.....OOPS" "Aha! Got you. I'm going to break this story and become huge!"

Wittenmeyer is taking one Piniella quote, twisting ito ut of context, and then writing some BS about what "his sources have told him".

I don't think we get Peavy, but that's a garbage article from a garbage writer. Isn't this the same Gordon Wittenmeyer who constantly publishes rumors that are way out there and not even close to being true? Like last season when he claimed we were on our way to getting Bedard and Roberts?

His writing is still sharp as ever

Not really. He mostly just writes everything in question format and peppers in the occasional "guh" for emphasis. I think the writers who have spun off Desipio (the Hire Jim Essian guys, mostly) are far better.

Here's the Wittenmeyer article in question

''I think it's only talk,'' said Piniella, who won his third manager of the year award, the first two coming in 1995 and 2001 with Seattle. ''I really haven't talked to [GM] Jim Hendry much at all about our situation. We had a nice conversation at organizational meetings a couple of weeks ago. At that time, we hadn't talked about Peavy. I really learned about Peavy just watching ESPN.

''We'll see what happens with that. I haven't had any substantive talks with Jim about it.''

That means only one thing: The Cubs aren't serious about Peavy. Piniella hasn't been out of the loop on any significant player move since he was hired, much less one that would approach this magnitude.

Wow, way to jump to conclusions. So everybody lied about the Cubs actually being interested in Peavy and Lou just spoiled everyone's master plan? Right.

True. And I have noticed a lot of his articles are spent ripping on an imaginary (yet real) group of "Cubs fans" that are panicked, delusional, and irrational regarding the Cubs. Someone commented in his entry today that Andy sounds like a grumpy old man, and that seems to fit well. I still enjoy reading his posts though. Andy if you're reading this, keep em coming!

Wow, I take back what I said above. I still think its entirely possible that Towers floated these semi-true rumors on purpose, but his article provides absolutely no proof of that.
