Gordon Wittenmyer talked to his sources and agrees with Lou Piniella's indication that the Cubs are not serious about Jake Peavy. Wittenmyer believes San Diego sources were putting the Cubs rumors out there to drive up the price. He says the Cubs are focused on acquiring an athletic lefthanded hitter this winter.

Wittenmyer says Raul Ibanez, Jeremy Hermida, and Brian Roberts remain on the radar. The latest word on Hermida is that the Marlins will need to be "wowed" to move him.

This sounds more believable regarding the Cubs situation.

I wonder how close Peavy and Hoffman are. San Diego really screwed the pooch with Hoffman. Here is a guy who has spent most of his HOF career with the Padres. How many times has "Hell's Bells" played in the 8th and 9th innings of his long and historical career?

Instead of just coming out and saying that they want to go in a different direction, or being open and honest and saying they just can't afford to give Hoffman the kind of contract he is looking for, they make a lowball offer that basically gets yanked off the table the moment Hoffman calls into question the offer. Sports talk San Diego is up in arms about the way Hoffman was treated. If Peavy is even semi-close to Hoffman, I wonder how many favors Peavy is willing to extend to the Padres front office?

Players will do what's best for them regardless. He's not going to okay a trade that benefits the ownership and not himself. Players never think that way.

I really really like that Wittenmeyer considers Ibanez athletic.

I also like that Piniella's comments are pretty much carbon copy of what he was saying leading up to the Harden deal.

Wittenmeyer's a sensationalist hack.

No, but he could veto a trade that doesn't benefit him enough. We have been hearing lately that whatever team trades for Peavy may have to pick up that option year and make it guaranteed, which could then inspire those teams requesting Peavy's services to offer up less for Peavy. His contract isn't below market anymore if that final year becomes guaranteed.

Will the Braves still be willing to offer up their latest package if it means they have to guarantee that final year?

That what I said in the above post.

I was just about to say that. Piniella has always been either coy or clueless about anything that Hendry is/will be doing. His standard line is "we talked about it a while ago, I haven't heard anything since".

Take little stock in anything Piniella says about anything the GM is doing.

Hendry seemed pretty pissed last year when every Roberts negotiation seemed to be going straight to the media and interwebs.

Look back at the last few pages. They all pretty much confirm what I am saying. At least any of them with any credibility. Hell, many of them pretty much mirror what I am saying.

Donnie, I really want to believe you man.

What did your sources tell you then?

Really nothing beyond "Jake wants to be in Chicago" and "Atlanta isn't going to happen". I have more to say, but the more I think about it the more it could hurt the Cubs chances of getting him. I'm a Cubs fan first and foremost so I will not risk reducing the Cubs chances of getting one of the best pitchers in MLB just to improve my credibility with the board as a whole.

Is your source Peace, Belkast or Big Bird over at Oriole Hangout. Those guys called the Cubs deal for Brian Roberts last years weeks before it happened.

For the five billionth time, everyone and their mothers thought this was a done deal, Brian Roberts included. The problem was that Peter Angelos was insane and blocked any agreements made to trade Roberts to the Cubs.

Here's to hoping Hendry can "wow" the Marlins for Hermida because, there's no benefit to wasting money on Ibanez.

ibanez is second on my list after hermida...he has solid numbers and would really bring some solid production to the lineup...i don't understand the dislike for ibanez

His coat rack without a glove on it like defense.

He is really bad at defense. I couldn't pick if you asked me who I wanted for one half inning of defense Bonds or Ibanez.

Depends if Pie is still around. I'd rather use a Fontenot/DeRosa/Cedeno/Kosuke/Johnson/Pie timeshare for 2B/RF/CF.
