Gordon Wittenmyer talked to his sources and agrees with Lou Piniella's indication that the Cubs are not serious about Jake Peavy. Wittenmyer believes San Diego sources were putting the Cubs rumors out there to drive up the price. He says the Cubs are focused on acquiring an athletic lefthanded hitter this winter.

Wittenmyer says Raul Ibanez, Jeremy Hermida, and Brian Roberts remain on the radar. The latest word on Hermida is that the Marlins will need to be "wowed" to move him.

ibanez is only athletic in the sense that he is a professional athlete.

Here's to hoping Hendry can "wow" the Marlins for Hermida because, there's no benefit to wasting money on Ibanez.

ibanez is second on my list after hermida...he has solid numbers and would really bring some solid production to the lineup...i don't understand the dislike for ibanez

His age.

i can understand that, but who else would you rather have besides him?

realistically

Realistically, in order: Bradley and then Hermida.

I really like Bradley and to me a perfect offseason would be to get: Bradley or Hermida, Furcal and Peavy. I would be thrilled get those guys even though it's probably unlikely.

Bradley is the man of glass.

I hate the Cubs sometimes. Their fetish for minutia is disturbing and probably a good reason why they haven't won a WS in 100 years.

Leadoff man

Left handed power bat

Athletic

It's just maddening. Why not try to find the best player available?

I don't care if Bradley is fragile. He's my #1 option for RF. If we had to deal with Fukudome for 2/3 of the season slumping real bad we can handle 1/3 of the season not having Bradley available due to a minor injury. The upgrade to this offense would be huge with him.

What about Randy Winn? He isn't terribly expensive under $9 mil. He is a pretty versatile player, could bat leadoff or 5th. He plays good defense and has some speed.

He is really bad at defense. I couldn't pick if you asked me who I wanted for one half inning of defense Bonds or Ibanez.

I'm not much of a defensive guy, because for the most part I could get over bad defense if they are good at the plate, but Ibanez even scares me.

Eww. 8.25 mil is expensive for a RF with crappy production like that. I'd rather move DeRosa to right and give Fontenot a full time job than get Winn

I think a lot of people underrate defense. I don't think its as important as offense, but its more important than people give it credit for.

I just heard that same rumor and that the Padres were waiting for Peavy to agree to the trade on a sports news blip between Jim Rome hours.

Well one joker makes something up and then everybody piggybacks it

1:34pm: No agreement, says Yahoo's Tim Brown, but "some movement" in talks with the Braves. Brown's source also says the Cubs' offer was much better than reported.

One wonders if Ceda was in the offer.

Alright, I just PM'd Raisin since he was the only mod that contacted me. Now when he gets it he can judge for himself and give his opinion to the board.

Considering the Padres gave him up in the first place in exchange for Todd Walker, something tells me they probably didn't want him back.

But, considering their history of strong relief pitching, they might be interested in Gregg. :-k
