Don't forget the last closer Hendry got from Florida in a trade...I don't know if it's a case that he doesn't overvalue it as he isn't afraid to look inhouse for help.

Even if Gregg is kept he wouldn't be the closer. I see Gregg replacing Howry on the roster.

And who replaces Wood?

That the million dollar question, isn't it?

Not in my mind, it isn't. Because I don't see Gregg as a replacement for Howry.

He sure won't be the closer, not with Marmol on the roster.

The San Diego Padres have nothing on the table that would lead them to trade ace Jake Peavy anytime soon, general manger Kevin Towers said Thursday afternoon.

“Nothing is close,” he said. “I wouldn’t say we are even remotely close to pulling the trigger on anything with Jake.”

Who needs him? We got Kevin Gregg!

Marmol is much more valuable working in the flexible set-up role.

I don't know if the Cubs look at it that way.

I agree that Marmol is better suited for the flexible set-up role, but I think the Cubs are going to make him the closer with Gregg as set up.

no problem, just promote Marmol to closer and call up Ceda to . . . aw [expletive].

Pitcher Jake Peavy's slow, torturous path out of San Diego remained on hold Thursday.

"I don't know if this is gamesmanship or what," Barry Axelrod, Peavy's agent, said Thursday afternoon. "At one point the Braves were hot and heavy, then they were not. And then they're hot again."

Not hot enough, however, for the Padres to agree with Atlanta on what sources with knowledge of the talks say is a four-player package that, as of Wednesday night, was likely to send shortstop Yunel Escobar, starting pitcher Charlie Morton, Class A outfielder Gorkys Hernandez and reliever Blaine Boyer to San Diego.

"I assume if and when they get to the point where they've tentatively agreed on something, they will bring us in," Axelrod said. "They have to. I haven't been updated on any progress."

The Braves had been pushing the Padres for an answer before the free agent market opens on Friday (until then, clubs can negotiate only with their own free agents).

Of course he is. But you can bet the farm he'll be closing.

That's not much of a bet at this point.

Now it will be interesting to see how the Cubs fill out the rest of the bullpen. Gregg would not be a bad replacement for Howry in the pen. If the Cubs were able to get Fuentes or another good setup person, I like this move alot more.

This isn't saying much.

9:41pm: Kevin Towers told Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune that despite advanced discussions with the Braves and Cubs, he does not see a potential deal with either club. Krasovic wonders if Towers will now try to engage the Yankees and Angels.

WTF

Negotiation tactic. He will go to either the Braves or Cubs.

What Towers says means nothing to me, but I've been thinking lately that he's going to go somewhere other than Atlanta or Chicago. It seemsl ike something would have happened by now.

The thing I was looking to find out is from what Donnie told you raisin, is the source a good enough one that, if true, the source would know what he was talking about?

Meaning, its not like the Padres team janitor that overheard something, but its like a person who is in the know.

Yes...if true, this source would know what he was talking about.

HE?

You just cut the number of potential sources in half you fool.

Or its an inherant sexual bias...

Raisin's sexist?

I'm telling his girlfriend on him!

Wait, wait, wait. I go away for a couple of months and Raisin has a girlfriend? That's not possible.

If we got fuentes then why would we need Gregg...you talkin loco. Why do we need to replace Howry? He was no good last year and we were fine.

If Peavy doesn't go to the Cubs that will be 3 of the last 4 offseasons where we've missed out on our number one target. This would piss me off less than the other 2 though.
