That doesn't mean they're out. It's all posturing.

Except the Braves really can't sit on their hands for a few weeks and wait for this to deal to play out as the free agent pitching market gets picked clean in the next few weeks.

But should they fail in their pursuit of their main targets, they could be right back in the mix.

:26pm: Ken Rosenthal says the Cubs remain interested in Peavy; they intend to add one starting pitcher. Ryan Dempster is another possibility, and Randy Johnson is also on the radar.

4:14pm: Much ink has been spilled on the possibility of the Braves acquiring Jake Peavy, but GM Frank Wren tabled that idea today. Wren has notified the Padres he's moving on to other pitchers to fill his rotation. A.J. Burnett, Derek Lowe, and Ryan Dempster are known to be targets.

Seriuly, it shouldnt be that hard. Trade Gregg and whatever else for Peavy. Re sign Wood. Sign Abreu or Ibanez. Let Dempster fly.

The Cubs, the other team in the heaviest pursuit of Peavy, remain interested in acquiring him, sources say. The team is intent on adding one starting pitcher, whether it's trading for Peavy, re-signing Dempster as a free agent, or finding another pitcher. Left-hander Randy Johnson is one of the free-agent pitchers in whom the Cubs are interested."

I bought up Randy the other day as an option at the back end of the rotation if he wanted to take a discount to play with Piniella again and contend.

Depends on how much he'd cost, but it would be sort of interesting.

Padres general manager Kevin Towers told the San Diego Union-Tribune on Thursday that he may seek to trade Peavy to the Yankees or Angels because of his inability to reach an agreement with the Braves or Cubs.

I still don't think that will happen as Peavy has said he doesn't want to goto the AL. Unless that changes (which I guess it could), they can seek out other teams all they want.

Since when has the FA pitching market gotten picked bare before the GM meetings?

I don't understand why you think the Padres would want Gregg

It may depend on who the Braves value and how much money they have to spend. They might only want AJ Burnett for all we know.

the same reason people thought other GM's would want Ronny Cedeno last year. wishful thinking

Other teams wanting Cedeno make a hell of a lot more sense than the Padres wanting Gregg

By the way, Hendry should take notes from Wren on how to have some balls and not get jerked around for too long. Even if Wren is just posturing, at least he stepped up and put a stop to the back and forth waste of time stuff. hendry let the O's jerk around way too long last offseason.

What was lost in doing that? The ability to go balls out for Kaz Matsui?

Respect. He basically said to every other GM out there that he can be jerked around for months and you won't lose him

Do you really think Hendry lost respect among other GM's because he has not satisfied your media obligation in telling you everything that is going on?

Like how Beane jerked him around over Harden? Or did Jim just bowl him over with his exorbitant offer that Beane had to say yes? And Beinfest's puppet in Florida?

Wait, what did I ever say about him not tleling us stuff?

All I'm saying is that it's not a good example to set that you can be haggled for 5 months and not walk away

He's not the best GM out there, but I highly doubt he's not respected by players and other GM's.

Yes you're right. Those examples completely prove that GM's didn't take note of the way the Orioles messed with Hendry for months. Good work.

Well part of the reason that all of us(except for David) are freaking out right now is because he refused to haggle and walked away prematurely. I'd rather a GM stay in a conversation too long than walk away too soon.

I'm pretty sure he wasn't in danger of walking away too soon when they were still discussing Roberts into spring training

Anyways, what Wren said doesn't automatically mean he's walking away

So if you don't think Wren is walking away, what is he doing differently than Hendry other than announcing to the media that he will look at other pitchers. It's already been reported that Hendry is doing the same.

And if everyone could stop making me defend Hendry on the day this quote from Wood came out that would be aces.

What if Hendry has an inside guy as well that knows that Peavy only wants to go to the Cubs, so that is why he has a low offer on the table for him. I hope Hendry doesn't lose out on Peavy cuz of him being too cheap. Give up something!!
