Lou wanted another lefty, apparently.

EDIT: Yet again, the organization cares more about what hand a guy throws or bats with than how well he performs with that hand.

In fairness, though, Cotts has thrown well recently.

I'm neither for nor against the move.

I hate that they always worry about LH or RH starters and hitters, but a LH pitcher can be handy and Cotts has been pitching well in the minors.

He has, but Ascanio has looked great ever since he has been up here.

If it's not broke, don't fix it.

5 IP, 4 hits, 3 walks 3 strikeouts. Only 1 ER, but his numbers don't scream MUST KEEP!

Tad bit of a head-scratcher, but Cotts has been performing well lately.

I think part of the reasoning behind this move is to see what Cotts can offer this team. Eyre's contract is up at the end of the year and the Cubs' bullpen would benefit from having a capable left-hander in the bullpen over the long haul. If Cotts can't produce, then he's fodder and can be shipped off at the deadline.

Agreed. He's shown flashes of excellence, but then will give up a hard hit ball.

This move is nothing major, I'd rather keep the guy with the upside, but nobody else could be sent down.

I wonder what roles they're going to assign them. Is Cotts the LOOGY now and Eyre a full inning guy? Is it the other way around? Are they going to be interchanged?

Personally, I'd make Cotts the LOOGY and let Eyre come in at the beginning of innings. I can perfectly understand why Lou is not comfortable bringing in Eyre in tight situations with runners on. Even though he has gotten it done the last couple of weeks, he's too wild to do it consistently. Let him start an inning, and then if he walks a batter it's not as big of a deal and he can work out of the trouble. Of course, Cotts is only slightly better in the walks department.

And I agree about Ascanio. He pitched well, but he wasn't that good. 3 of his 4 hits given up were doubles. He didn't have a single 1-2-3 inning, and only had 1 inning where he didn't allow a person to reach 2nd base. It was an effective but rocky 5 innings.

they also scream SHOCKINGLY SMALL SAMPLE SIZE.

I don't really think it has a great impact (if any) on our chances of winning, but it does seem sort of pointless.

Well yeah, but I was just refuting the notion that he's been great.

Bottom line is no reason to get pissed about it.

Well this is disappointing. Ascanio showed good stuff, and really hadn't been given much of an opportunity, but when he was used in short relief he was fine(3 IP, 2 H, 2/1 K/BB after his 2 IP debut). Hopefully he continues to humiliate AAA hitters and comes back soon.

We agree there. I just don't like sending Ascanio down when he hasn't "earned" the demotion. If Hendry really doesn't believe that sending guys to AAA after a stint in the majors is deflating for them, he's fooling himself. If you don't need to do it (for performance or roster reasons), I'd prefer not to.

This just seems like a showcase move, IMO. The bullpen is where the Cubs may be able to afford to make a trade or two to boost the starting staff or CF.

Besides the fact that the pen has been a bit overworked of late. If they can get some quality innings out of Cotts, they might be able to impress some other teams with 2 bullpen arms like Cotts and Ascanio.

Youd think theyd want to keep Cotts and Ascanio. Eyre and Howry are both in contract years, and would you rather have Cotts and Ascanio if they could stay productive or throw 3-5 mil at 2 guys who will give us half a good season every year? Remember, Kenny Williams officially screwed up the marked for middle aged relievers with the Linebrink and "O-Do Tell"(thats Hawk and D.J. lingo for Octavio Dotel) deals.
