We need a new coach. Our number one choice, Jeff Capel, just re-signed in Oklahoma for more money. Look for a few other coaches to use us for a raise. Our AD loves Sean Miller, but not his buyout. The Western Kentucky coach and UMASS coach Travis Ford are also on our list.

I realize that the IU search has created much more interest on the board, but South Carolina has a new head coach. It is Western Kentucky head coach Darrin Horn. For those of you giving Crean all the love for Dwyane Wade, it was Horn who got him to Marquette. No coach has ever won anything at a press conference, but for a 35 year old head coach, he crushed it. I am very excited about the future of South Carolina basketball.

Today, Rivals.com's 9th rated player, Scotty Hopson verbals to Tennessee. Other rumors suggest Tyler Smith is staying at UT for another season.

How has Crean done recruiting Chicago, and Illinois in general? Other than DWade, I cant think of any stars hes brought in. Am i missing anyone?

jerel mcneal, ousmane barro, joe chapman, maurice acker, dameon mason. and marcus jackson from peoria.

he was also a finalist, with illinois, for shaun pruitt. he seems to recruit fairly well, though he's not really a player for chicago 5 stars, though, admittedly, the illini haven't been either.

As for Summit, I think she'd be pretty good as Tennessee men's basketball coach. I doubt she'd do well at any other big school. And I'm pretty sure she's said that she'd never be interested in Tennessee's job, and if she's not interested in that one she's certainly not going to take any other men's job.

I agree with most of this.

I think she'd be excellent early on as UT's men's coach, but might struggle to get enough respect outside the state to be highly successful quickly. Give her a season or two, though, and I think she'd start finding success anywhere.

I also don't recall her outright saying she would never be the UT men's basketball coach, just a strong hesitation in taking the job. It's a moot point now anyway with Pearl there, and too, I've heard she's leaning toward retirement in the next 5 years or so.

Awesome news on Hopson - I was really hoping we'd pull him in.

I'm also extremely excited about our future (especially with Tyler Smith likely returning), but I'm a tad worried about our ability to hit outside shots next year. Chism can hit the occassional three, but other than him we've basically got Cameron Tatum and, perhaps, Hopson who's strength is shooting from the outside.

I like our inside game a lot, though. Chism, Crews and Williams should improve underneath and Tyler's shown a great ability to drive to the basket.

I saw only two WKU games in the tourney but I liked what I saw. Granted, it took him 5 years to get to the tourney, but he did a good job. South Carolina could have done worse.

OK, so Marquette guy here with some thoughts: Crean's a good hire, though his never recruiting big men is still an issue. He does coach defense mercilessly with the "strip-steal." So Indiana made out pretty well I guess, though I'm still shocked that he'd leave.

So now that Marquette's job is open, who goes there? Thoughts?

Would they consider Majerus? I know he just got to St. Louis but I would have to think he'd take it if offered.

Majerus was the first name that immediately popped into my mind.

Here's an interesting thought that Forde at ESPN pondered about. Bruce Weber to Marquette. Apparently Weber is from Milwaukee and a UWM grad. As a Marquette student, I'm not sure how I feel about it. Thoughts?

Summitt refused to let her plane land in Kentucky while in labor, because she refused to let her son Tyler be born anywhere other than Tennessee.
That reminds me of a story I once read about Woody Hayes (I don't know if it's true or not). Supposedly he and at least one of his assistants were driving back home to Ohio from Michigan (I think it was a recruiting trip). An assistant who was driving said they needed to stop for gas. Hayes said no; they'd push the car across the state line if they ran out of gas, but they would not buy one drop of gas in Michigan. I don't recall if they actually did run out of gas or not, but if they did it was undoubtedly the assistant(s) who got to do the pushing, not Hayes.

I find it hilarious that this post had nothing at all to do with what was quoted. I don't care, we all love talking about our schools in good times, but the need to quote the current conversation was quite funny.

Pat Forde knows the SEC and little else. Pat Forde talking about a midwest coaching vacancy is like me pondering who the next coach of Alcorn St. is.

i'm definitely happy with Crean. he's a solid coach and i enjoy watching the style that his teams played at Marquette. he was definitely one of my top choices and, after recent events, i'm somewhat surprised he took the job.

now i hope he can bring Bassett back into the fold. i would think Crean's style of play would be great for him.

I selfishly hope Bassett is back. I watched him a lot in high school and always seemed like a good kid when I talked to him. On the other hand, I hope the door hits Ellis on the way out. Not sure what message it sends allowing either back, though.

Let's face it, recruiting at Marquette is not the same as recruiting at Indiana. I think his up tempo play will be attractive to a lot of recruits and he's a solid coach.

yeah, i'm not sure how realistic and/or smart it is to bring either back. i'm clearly not prevy to the full details of their dismissal or departure from the team. it is one of many difficult positions Crean is going to face right off the bat. i've always been a big fan of Bassett and therefore hope he hasn't burned the bridge to re-instatement.

Ellis...meh...i guess i don't really care. i don't think he has a lot of options at this point if he wants to play basketball.

the biggest thing Crean is going to face right away is trying to salvage a team from the players still "around" the system, for lack of a better term (Bassett, Crawford, Holman, McGee, etc.). i know Holloway had Marquette on his short list, so maybe he'll stick with the Hoosiers now. i assume Ebanks is gone.

I'm not sure if it was already posted, but according to CBS Sportsline, Lute Olson has fired once future Arizona head coach Kevin O'Neill:

CBS Sportsline[/url]"]O'Neill, who joined Olson's staff before this past season and then replaced him on an interim basis, has been ripping Olson behind his back. Just crushing him. How do I know this? Because I've talked to several people -- not one; several -- who were on the receiving end of O'Neill's rants against Olson. O'Neill isn't as smart as he thinks if he thought his hammerings of Olson weren't going to come out. Good grief, Kevin. This stuff always comes out.

O'Neill wasn't just the Wildcats' interim coach. He was their next coach, or at least, he thought he was. Arizona made him that verbal promise months ago, and O'Neill accepted it. Last week when Olson announced he was returning to the team for the 2008-09 season, O'Neill said he would be back at Olson's side.

Apparently not. Olson seems to have fired O'Neill, and let me tell you, the pink slip was deserved. This is a bad guy, OK? Kevin O'Neill is simply not a good dude, and Olson -- whose program has been crushed by other bad dudes masquerading as players -- was able to sniff this one out. Good for you, Lute Olson.

Probably called Lute that name you usually get tossed out of a game by umps.

anyone else think the Self to OSU rumor has zero chance of happening?

local ESPNRadio just said Self, Gillespie and Tubby Smith were candidates. none of those make any sense at all (in terms of leaving their current jobs)

Lol. Why stop there OSU? Phil Jackson and John Wooden are probably interested too.

Self does seeing as how he went to OSU. Maybe Tubby does too. Money talks and OSU has some pretty huge donors.
