IU should just hire Sean Miller. He will be very good for them and shouldn't be super expensive.

They might very well hire him, but I think his buyout is relatively expensive. I still think Bennett is the prohibitive favorite (ignoring things like he might stick at WSU or go somewhere else... I mean he's the favorite of the IU folks).

Northwestern, please. That would be all kinds of awesome.

The only way that would happen (and there is a long list of reasons why it won't) is if he'd come in after next season. Henry Bienen, current president and longtime friend of Carmody, has already said Bill will be back next season. The department can't afford the buyout, anyways. Of course, it will probably take a significant improvement in order for Carmody to get an extension. Bienen will be retiring after the 2008-2009 school year and Phillips is taking over as AD next month, so it will be up to Phillips...and the new President, along with Pat Ryan, as to how much money they're willing to spend.

Northwestern is the ultimate ego job, though. There have been some big name coaches throughout the years who have said that they'd love to have a chance to coach at Northwestern and win here. Of course, the guys who have said it, like Jimmy V., have always left the stipulation that they'd need 1 academic exception a year. That won't happen. Of course, Knight wouldn't need it.

You guys have a great womans lacrosse team, that should be enough.

I would say favorite is Bruce Pearl right now. Until yesterday I said no way because Tennessee is better program than IU right now because IU is losing everything and reputation is a bit tarnished. However my opinion changed when I heard Pearl makes 1.3 mil.

Might sound like a lot but isn't but roughly average in the big conferences. Now you might expect him to get a raise after this year but it won happen. He has the identical salary to Pat Summit (and I believe the football coach too).

Tenn. has made it a point for Summit to get at least equal to the men's coach. You may think that's stupid because the men make more than women idea. But when you consider Tennessee sells out every women's game and out draws the men its not true whatsoever. And since Summit has won multiple NC and is one of the winniest coaches of all time Pearl will not be getting a raise.

Now if Pearl decides to go to IU (he has ties to Indiana with his first head coaching job being in the state) he would probably make 2 million plus.

If Pearl doesn't get it I don't see how Alford wouldn't He wouldn't cost too much (I really doubt IU considers cost into who they higher) because he has made it known he wants the IU job. He would make the old-timers who love Bobby Knight and went crazy over higher a cheater happy, and the new-school people who want a young face to lead. Another bonus is there would be no buyout to get Alford. He has a clause put into all his coaching contracts that if IU offers him the head coaching job he can leave no strings attached.

am i the only one bothered by the fact that coaches can change jobs mid-contract? if MLB players making millions are bound by their contracts, why shouldn't college coaches be?

Especially since then the players they were coaching cannot leave without sitting out for a year. It is a really bad system for sure.

no to bruce pearl. it boggles my mind that so many iu fans want pearl. 1) to claim you want someone who is squeky clean and then mention pearl in the same breath is completely insane; 2) he plays pretty much the exact opposite brand of basketball that most iu fans claim to love.

You're probably still recovering from that beatdown in the dome from a few days ago.

Non-revenue sports have improved remarkably under Mark Murphy over the last few years. Basically every program this winter and spring aside from the two basketball teams and the baseball team did very well, but the challenge for our new AD will be fundraising. He did a great job with that at NIU and while I love Welsh-Ryan Arena, we still desperately need other facility upgrades for our basketball program. The locker room was recently renovated, but the rest of their facilities are horrible. Putting some money into the program should help with recruiting, not just picking the right coach next season.

Please anyone but Alford.

Actually reason #2 is why I would not mind seeing Pearl get the job. It would be nice to see a totally different style of basketball at IU.

Plenty to respond to here.

1. Tennessee IS a better program than IU right now.

2. Anything that you have read that states that the Lady Vols outdraw the men is antiquated. That has not been the case in 3 years. Even if both fill the arena at the same rate, the number of tickets given away for Lady Vol games assure that the mens program earns at least 3x the amount that the ladies do on ticket sales alone.

3. Pearl WILL get a raise, without question. He will be in the 2 million dollar range very soon. (and for the record, neither Pearl nor Summit make what Fulmer makes. As a business decision, neither deserve to. As a sports decision, both should be close, but Fulmer still deserves more.)

4. Tennessee gave Pearl a chance when no one else would. He is not leaving any time soon.

And for those of you whiners who bash Pearl for being dirty- stop crying. You guys are like the brilliant Bama football fans who blame everyone else for YOU getting caught cheating. "It's the NCAA's fault!" "It's Tennessee's fault!" Was the way he did it above board? Nope. Was he the one cheating? NOPE.

Truth is, Pearl HAS to be clean. Do some of you people really and truly think that there aren't 20 coaches out there looking for anything- any little thing at all- with which to accuse and indict Pearl? Get real. If he were cheating, there is a long list of names of coaches who would be all over it.

tennessee has had a better stretch than iu has over the past few years, but iu is a top job and a better program.

no doubt tennessee is a better team, but the program is nowhere near iu, nowhere near. they will always be a football school, and pearl would be stupid not to jump at the job if offered. the only question here is if pearl will be welcomed back into the big ten after the deon thomas fiasco. he may not even be offered the job.

and wisconsin-milwaukee took a bigger chance on him than tennessee did. he upgraded to a marginally better program, and he'll upgrade again if given the chance at a top 10 program like indiana.
