So, who is the consensus second and third choices now that Bennett is out?

I was pretty surprised that they didn't even wait to interview the Xavier coach

I want Sean Miller.

They are probably too cheap to buy out his contract.

I personally believe that Mike Montgomery and Lon Kruger are next on the list but that is pure speculation on my part.

I find it hard to believe that Indiana basketball is having a hard time coming up with money, but that could just be me.

It's not so much that they would have a hard time coming up with the money...it's the fact that our athletic department is being run by incompetent boobs and I don't see them making any "offers you can't refuse" in terms of $$$.

Miller doesn't want to leave Xavier and he has a 2M buyout.

Kruger's wife supposedly hates cold weather, and wouldn't allow him to go back to the midwest.

Montgomery I've heard conflicting things, some people say he's a west coast guy and would be more interested in the Cal job.

Cal or LMU.

Rumor out of Indiana saying Ellis and Bassett are transferring, Crawford likely as well.

Unlikely. The course was contradicted on live television by AJ Ratliff. Ellis is a JUCO with one year of eligibility left, he's highly unlikely to go. Bassett I would suspect is unlikely to go, according to what I've heard. Crawford is very possible.

Everything depends on the coach they hire, of course.

Wow, LMU has been terrible for a long time.

His family has some sort of tie to LMU, not sure if those were just unfounded rumors or what.

By all accounts I trust, IU didn't interview or offer the job to Bennett. They simply asked if he would be interested. He said no. It's very possible they did the same with Miller and other coaches. That said, Miller's buyout could be a sticking point for IU (not that they can't afford it, but that they won't want to).

i say "good for them" to all these coaches for turning IU down. Not because I have any ill will towards Hoosiers basketball, but because it's nice to see coaches stick with their programs and not fly off to the sexier job at any opportunity. Xavier was an Elite 8 team this year and IU is a complete mess with sanctions coming. It's a no brainer

Hmm...if only there was an example of a coach taking Xavier to the Elite Eight then jumping ship to a Big Ten program on probation, then playing for the National Championship three years later...yeah, must be a no-brainer.

if iu let's miller's buy-out stand in the way, i'm going to be pissed.

i fully expect to be pissed.

i think bennett's non-interest in the job should open the eyes of a lot of dillusional iu fans out there that think iu is still considered a "dream job" and that they have the pick of the litter when it comes to coaches. i'm looking at you, Kravitz and Hutchins.

Yes, all the way back in 2004 when Thad Matta took Xavier to the Elite Eight and promptly left for Ohio State, who was barred from the 2005 NCAA Tournament.

Of course, that doesn't mean I expect Sean Miller to jump for Indiana. I expect IU's administration to royally botch this decision.

Wonder if Bennett's lack of interest has anything to do with the way his sister was treated as IU women's coach? I don't remember the story (as I just remembered Cathi was a women's coach) but she was controversially fired.

No, she resigned. It was under Greenspan's watch, however. She was universally liked here, and she assured me that it was her decision to leave. I believe her, too. However, I got the feeling Dick Bennett didn't feel exactly the same way; but that's conjecture. Kathi's situation certainly could have some influence on Tony.

Pat Sumitt people...I'm going to say it over and over until you all get some brains and realize what a great move this would be.

what possible motivation would she have?
