Per ESPN Cal hires Mike Montgomery. Great hire.

Great hire. Bet Stanford fans can't be happy.

Craig Robinson is leaving Brown after just two seasons to take the job at Oregon State.

Good for him, but I'm a little surprised. Robinson is a good recruiter, but Oregon State is quite different than recruiting in Chicago, which he still did plenty of at Brown.

Brent "Buzz" Williams got the Marquette job. Just announced through school e-mail. Apparently he's a great recruiter, so we'll see how this goes. Certainly not a name, but he's young at 35.

Williams, 35, was an assistant coach for the Golden Eagles this year. Before coming to Marquette, he served as the head coach at the University of New Orleans in 2007-08. Prior to that he served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Texas A&M under Billy Gillispie, with two recruiting classes named among the best in the country. Williams was at Colorado State from 2001 through 2004, concluding his tenure there as associate head coach. Earlier in his career he was an assistant at Northwestern State, Texas A&M - Kingsville, and Texas-Arlington.

Any idea why he left NO after just 1 year as HC? Seems odd to me that you would go to an asst. job after being a head coach for only a year and be considered a viable candidate for a pretty good job in a big time conference.

I'm hearing 6 mil a year offered to Self by Okie State. Crikey.

the six mil is the signing bonus, the contract would be 3.5 mil

at least that was the word this morning

I heard 6M signing bonus, 4M a year. That was before tonight, though, should earn him an extra 1M a year.

ohhh. Sorry, it's mass confusion on the KU board.

I've believed that Self was gone ever since Sutton quit. It's pretty clear that Self is the guy that everyone at OSU wants and they're going to do everything they can to get him.

If Self turns down that OSU offer, I'll have a newfound respect for him.

I'd guess Stanford gets Randy Bennett (St. Mary's head coach) but I bet their fans wished their hero Monty had waited a few weeks more rather than accept the Berkeley head coaching job.

I just heard this. WTH is that all about? Do they have nothing left after the Lopez twins are gone?

No, not really. Their guards are average at best and looked much better because of the Lopi.

I think Cuse hit on the biggest reason, though - admissions and academics: much easier to get top flight athletes at LSU than Stanford (and then not worry about them going on probation like Brook Lopez did for grades earlier this season).

ETA: This makes it weird, sounds like Stanford was Johnson's dream job (from the Stanford blog at their local newspaper, the San Jose Mercury News):

Johnson, a former Stanford assistant under Mike Montgomery, wanted to coach at Stanford for many, many years. During his tenure at Nevada, he told recruits that Stanford was the only place he’d leave Reno for.

Apparently Johnson had been vying for a contract extension all year and never got one.

All LSU fans knew that their next head coach would be a minority hire. Not that it isn't a good hire. When they decided that Bertman wouldn't be allowed to hire the coach everyone knew that that was what was going to happen.

Bowlsby is getting some heat over the Trent Johnson situation. It really seems like Johnson wanted to stay there forever but Bob wouldn't give him an extension and nudged him out. Raises the possibility of Montgomery weaseling out of his deal with Cal to come to Stanford. That would be extremely slimy and I don't see that happening.

Bowlsby is an excellent fund raiser and very good at rubbing shoulders, but not necessarily as great at the athletics part of the job. If he had his way we would have hired Terry Allen instead of Kirk Ferentz.

It's amazing to me that in this day and age, AD's still lollygag when trying to lock up coaches.

I'm not quite sure why he left NO, but apparently he's been on the map for some time as a recruiter. So far he's said all the right things, so I'm giving him a chance. One advantage though is that the team shouldn't be racked with transfers/NBA defections/regime change issues. To be perfectly honest, I always thought Crean to be a great motivator and teacher, but just a good coach. I have little reason at this point to doubt that Williams can't potentially get to that level.

Also, reports are that Okie State offered Bennett from Wazzu, and he declined as well.
