What a monster. If they're getting the players rumored, this is a great deal for the O's, especially if they nab 2-3 of the names rumored for Roberts from the Cubs. Angelos is doing all he can to kill this team.

if i were macphail and i made a trade that i thought was good for the organization, and angelos vetoed the trade, i'd hand him my resignation. the team's performance on the field will be the determining factor in whether the GM stays or gets canned (see pat gillick, frank wren, syd thrift, jim beattie), and if you have a meddling owner who doesn't know much about the ins and outs of baseball, and is notorious for becoming too attached to certain players on his ballclub, then it's time to walk away.

angelos is a complete disaster of an owner. i feel bad for orioles fans; even the cubs aren't this inept... and that's really saying something.

You forget the fact that this job is just a placeholder until Selig resigns and MacPhail becomes the commissioner. If it weren't for that then I'd completely agree with you.

Well, he's going to have to spend the next five years with the word "placeholder" on his business card, since they just re-upped Selig through 2012.

I wonder if the departure of Jones in this deal makes the Ms a potential suitor for Murton. They have been rumored to be interested in Wilkerson and Gonzalez to fill their OF opening, but maybe Murton makes sense for them? The only guys they have that I know Hendry has shown interest in the past are Ibanez and Vidro. Ibanez would just open up another hole in their OF, but Vidro seems like something I could see Hendry pursuing (I'm not advocating), and would open up DH for them to sign a Gonzalez or Tony Clark type veteran. Would Vidro be able to stay healthy playing 2B every day? Does anyone else think this deal seems plausible?

Peace update (I posed this in the MacPhail thread but it belongs here):

Please take this for what its worth.

But I was informed by my guy tonight that Peter Angelos did nix the Erik Bedard trade with Seattle.

Apparently the deal was OKed by PA early on in the day but then later he changed his mind and had it pulled.

MacPhail and Bavasi agreed to the deal originally and PA nixed it.

What a joke...

I don't see how Angelos expects MacPhail to stay, if he keeps interfering with every trade. If MacPhail had a backbone he would walk.

So let's review the news from today on this.

Seattle team official confirms that Jones is flying back to the States, but declines to answer for what reason

Seattle writer says this morning there is a deal, that it is very close despite protests to the contrary from Baltimore's side

Seattle beat writer claims to recieve e-mail from Jones still in Venezuela and that he was "misquoted"

ESPN says that Jones and Sherill have confirmed physicals, Sherill quickly denies it.

ESPN says that Angelos is unavailable today and will look to approve the deal tomorrow

Andy MacPhail says there is "no deal, and that he doesn't expect anything soon"

Seattle writer listens to tape recording of Jones's statement, and it very clearly says everything that the original quote had in it and he was not misquoted

Bill Bavasi claims that Jones was returned to the States during the middle of the championship series because he had "accomplished the goals of winter ball, so it was time to come home"

Rosenthal says that the deal is held up, and that sources indicate that Angelos nixed the deal

Orioles blog writer says that the deal is held up because Angelos is furious about leaks

Orioles insider adds that his source says that Angelos nixed the deal after initially approving it.

Anything I missed? This is 10x stranger than the Roberts trade. I'm not sure I've ever seen a near trade like this where so much different information is coming from every which way. Who really knows what to believe right now, but it seems to be 1 of 2 choices.

1) This is one of the greatest misinformation days there has ever been, and the physicals are due tomorrow and the trade will happen later this week.

2) Angelos nixed the deal.

I don't buy MacPhail's story that there was no agreement or Bavasi's story that Jones had accomplished his goals. You don't pull Jones out of the championship and right off the roster unless you have an agreement. You don't tell him he's being traded for Bedard without an agreement. So either that agreement is still there, or it was taken away by Angelos.

With that said, due to the track record of Angelos and the fact that #2 is a much simpler explanation, I have to be inclined to believe that he nixed it. The evidence points more to that then it does to any other conclusion.

This soap opera is fascinating...

You know what? This situation is now becoming a circus and Angelos is far from the only clown. Let's look at what Adam Jones, who let the cat out of his equipment bag about the deal in Venezuela on Sunday, is now telling people, as per KOMO 1000 radio reporter Shannon Drayer's blog.

"He says that he said nothing about being traded to the Venezuelan press,'' Drayer writes, relaying details of an email conversation with Jones. "Something may have been lost in translation somewhere."

Ah yes, if all else fails and you've dug yourself a gigantic hole, just cover it up by shovelling a bunch of manure into it and blaming the Spanish-speaking reporter from the South American country. Here's the problem with Jones's first attempt at a media coverup of what he told reporter Augusto Cardenas from Diario Panorama on Sunday. My first language is English and Cardenas, well, he happened to make an audio recording of the conversation with Jones.

I just had the tape played for me over the phone from Venezuela and, yes, Jones definitely said he was off to Baltimore this morning for a physical and that he'd been traded to the Orioles. Talked all about looking forward to meeting his new teammates in Florida this spring. So, nice try. But Jones should stick to baseball and leave the backpedalling to football players....

The real kicker? This deal isn't dead. I'd expect it to get done in the next few days. Are the Mariners ticked? I'm sure they are. Are the secrecy-plagued Orioles hopping mad? You betcha. But they should straighten all that out with Jones. What I don't like is that they called the credibility of Cardenas into question.

I'm glad the insiders are confirming what the national reporters are saying. Otherwise ya just know it wasn't true.

Yeah, I don't like that either.

If Angelos nixed the deal, I have two questions:

1. Why does MacPhail not tender his resignation?

2. Why would any team waste their time negotiating with anyone other than Angelos?

My only answer to 1 would be that MacPhail feels like he needs the support of Angelos when it comes time to possibly be the commissioner (or his sons when Angelos hands the team off) but I'm not sure that's worth how bad the job must be right now.

As far as the second question, I've been wondering that for quite a while now. The same thing happened with Tejada for years before he fell out of favor with Angelos. It just doesn't make sense why people would negotiate with the Orioles for their big players if Angelos isn't willing to give them up.

Why are the M's pissed and the O's upset?

We live in an age of technology so great that we can see games over the internet. We have computers in cars. Internet phones, PDAs, laptops, blah, blah, blah. Not to mention we in a generation that wants things down NOW, and not tomorrow. So unless a team or player is a master of deception and can hold certain information until the time is right for it to be released, nobody should be "upset" about info being leaked. It was going to happen sooner or later. So either get the "trade" done before the info is leaked, or prepare to have to answer questions about a rumor. Being upset about "leaked" information just shows your naiveness (if that is even a word).

FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal believes the Orioles may be upset enough about Adam Jones' comments on the deal to call off the Erik Bedard trade or at least seek additional compensation.

Yeah, there's good reason the Orioles remain in the running for the title of worst run organization in baseball. Either the deal is good enough or it isn't. Who cares if Jones admitted 12 hours ahead of time that he was going to Baltimore for a physical? If Peter Angelos kills the deal as is -- it's believed to currently be a five-for-one including Jones, George Sherrill, Chris Tillman, Adam Butler and Kam Mickolio -- the Mariners should simply move on. Rosenthal believes the Orioles may now be holding out for Carlos Triunfel, who should be untouchable.

Angelos............is a dang extortionist, IMO. Under the guise of being upset about Jones "letting the dog out" so to speak, is asking for "compensation" in the deal. Nevermind, according to Rosenthal, the O's would be getting 5 PLAYERS, but nah....Angelos wants a 6th player.

The M's shoudl just tell Angelos to bugger off, and move on. Dealing with Angelos isn't worth the headache.

The funny thing about that is the two teams brought this upon themselves with their timing of the trade. The only reason Jones said anything is because a reporter was interviewing him about why he was leaving the team in the middle of the World Series. Even if Jones had said no comment, as soon as the news had come on Sunday that he was off of the roster in Venezuela, the speculation would have happened anyway. If they really wanted the deal to be a little more quiet, they should have waited until after the winter leagues are over.

MacPhail new who the owner was when he took the job. That invalidates your point.

I believe the word you are looking for is naivete, and I am not even sure I spelled it correctly.
