Why are the M's pissed and the O's upset?

We live in an age of technology so great that we can see games over the internet. We have computers in cars. Internet phones, PDAs, laptops, blah, blah, blah. Not to mention we in a generation that wants things down NOW, and not tomorrow. So unless a team or player is a master of deception and can hold certain information until the time is right for it to be released, nobody should be "upset" about info being leaked. It was going to happen sooner or later. So either get the "trade" done before the info is leaked, or prepare to have to answer questions about a rumor. Being upset about "leaked" information just shows your naiveness (if that is even a word).

I believe the word you are looking for is naivete, and I am not even sure I spelled it correctly.

naivety?

i love the misplaced anger about information leaks. these GM's and owners and what not damn the media for spreading rumors, where they should be pissed at the people within their own organization who are leaking the information.

I feel the same way about leaked albums in the music industry. yes, you have a right to be pissed that your artist's album is all over bit torrent 3 weeks before it's release, but how about you go find out who in your recording studio is leaking the album first?

Looks like the real issue might be that the O's think Jones is damaged goods. They believe he has a degenerative hip condition and they're trying to squeeze more out of the M's.

I was going to say that maybe since Angelos is peeved about the leaks that happened with the O's trade with Seattle that maybe he'd listen to a proposal from the Cubs (provided that nobody lets "the cat out of the bag)...but on second thought. I don't think anyone is going to be able to effectively deal with Angelos. And they say that Roberts is one of his favorites? Hmm, I wonder if we'll ever get Brian Roberts, let alone Bedard.

if i were macphail and i made a trade that i thought was good for the organization, and angelos vetoed the trade, i'd hand him my resignation. the team's performance on the field will be the determining factor in whether the GM stays or gets canned (see pat gillick, frank wren, syd thrift, jim beattie), and if you have a meddling owner who doesn't know much about the ins and outs of baseball, and is notorious for becoming too attached to certain players on his ballclub, then it's time to walk away.

angelos is a complete disaster of an owner. i feel bad for orioles fans; even the cubs aren't this inept... and that's really saying something.

MacPhail new who the owner was when he took the job. That invalidates your point.

yes, but i don't recall angelos meddling in player acquisitions, and especially trades, like he has done this offseason. i can see macphail possibly not knowing the extent to which angelos will meddle. i don't really understand why anyone with any sort of positives on his resume (and yes, macphail does have some) would put himself in a situation where he literally cannot win.

One of the insiders at OH is telling everyone to relax and that the only holdup to the Bedard trade was paperwork and Angelos needs to look it over because he was unavailable the past few days. I think the trade will be done today or tomorrow. There are no injuries to Jones.

I saw the same thing. It's funny, because another guy's "source" (supposedly Bedard's agent) has a completely different story. One of em is bound to be right, lulz.

It's still ridiculous that it would take 3 days for a trade that was complete to be "approved" by the owner. Seriously, if its that big of a deal for Angelos to free up 15 minutes of free time, either trust the GM you hired or become the GM yourself.

I know. You give a GM his budget, and then trust him to do his damn job, or find someone else who you do trust. At this point, I'm not even sure I'm comfortable calling MacPhail the GM.

Well, it was supposedly completed Sunday night, and Stein or someone from ESPN said Angelos had family matters to deal with on Monday.

Today is Tuesday.

Yes, but the only "approval" that should be needed is that a) MacPhail was hired as the GM, and b) the move stays within the pre-defined budget for the offseason.

If you need to approve every move the GM makes, then he's not really the GM and you didn't hire the right guy.

Posted

Exactly. Do you think MacPhail or McDonough or Kenny has agreed with every move that Jim Hendry has made? Did they interfere? They didn't interfere because they picked Jim Hendry to be their general manager to handle the responsibility of acquiring and managing the players on the Chicago Cubs. They hired him because they thought he could do that job.

Angelos hired MacPhail because he is too busy to be the GM himself. This way MacPhail does all the work, which sometimes takes months of hard work, only to present it to MacPhail and have it turned down or accepted. But the problem is, Angelos isn't around the team in a day to day basis. He knows little about the Orioles day to day situation.

Think about if a company hired you to manage a group of people and everytime you made a managerial decision, you had to go ask the CEO for permission first. Only the CEO is too busy doing things on a larger scale and has no idea why giving bonuses to your top performing employees would motivate them, only that giving bonuses would cost a lot of money so he rejects it.

Unfortunately, you described my company perfectly...

I still say this trade gets done.

I think both of the Orioles trades are just inevitabilities. It's still annoying to have to wait.

The latest rumors have Bedard going to the Mariners for Jones and 4 pitchers. I wonder if that will affect the players we send the Orioles in a Roberts deal. I don't think it's possible, but it would be great to make the deal without involving Gallagher.

It's certainly possible they would make the deal without Gallagher. Of course, they would insist on Pie in the deal if Gallagher isn't there. At the beginning of the offseason, I thought Pie was a much better bet to hold on to. Now, with the reports about Gallagher's improvement and another average or worse winter league campaign by Pie, I'm not so sure that's the case anymore.

Erik Bedard's agent posts on the OH? Ha! I'm gonna make an account and tell everyone I'm Erik Bedard's conscience and let them know Erik wants to play in Japan

No. That insider's (Peace21, I think) source is Erik Bedard's agent.

Unconfirmed speculation on a Baltimore radio show is that Adam Jones has a degenerative hip condition that's put the Erik Bedard deal on hold.

There's been nothing legitimate anywhere lending this any weight, but since the Baltimore Sun is starting to run with it ever so slightly now, we will as well. As the Sun's Roch Kubatko put it: "Maybe this will prove true later. We'll find out soon enough. But nobody at The Sun would go on a radio show and blurt out this kind of information without being absolutely positive (and obviously reporting it in the paper first). That's dangerous territory, especially when you're possibly impacting a young athlete's reputation and future earnings." Exactly right.

I'm not sure his "source" is actually Mark Pieper (Bedard's agent). I think it might just be someone that works in the same agency or something.
