I can't believe the Cubs employed that pud puller for more than ten years.

If the deal is really Bedard for Jones, Clement, and two of Tillman, Triunfel, and Balentien, then MacPhail wins the trade big time.

Don't forget Morrow, imo.

If the Orioles front office wasn't a laughing stock before MacPhail took over they are now.

Not if they're getting Jones, Clement, Tillman and Truinfel for Bedard.

exactly - that would be a helluva deal for the O's

My post was in the context that the Mariners are pulling there players out of games and informing them they've been traded and to head to Baltimore. Meanwhile MacPhail says there's no deal done. Someone's full of crap and it's looking like the Orioles again.

If they come out of this offseason with those four plus Cedeno, Murton, and Gallagher (if that is indeed the proposed deal), they significantly improved their future.

I can't see them getting that deal. I think they would be happy with Jones, Clement, Tillman, and a lesser 4th player.

Heh, a poster on a Mariners board way earlier posted that his mom works for an airline service and told him Adam Jones had just bought a plane ticket to Baltimore. Look who's laughing now...

Well, yeah he's going to deny it, it isn't official. I'm sure there's a couple of X's and O's to be signed. BTW, Peace on OH said to expect Tuesday to be the "official day", since Jones i getting the physical done tomm.

From Churchill at prospectinsider:

I’m being told by three different sources that the trade is as close to being done as it can get without an actual deal. May just be a matter of dotting some i’s and crossing some t’s.

What I am getting is that it’s Adam Jones, Chris Tillman, George Sherrill, Tony Butler and Kameron Mickolio going to Baltimore.

So far, no word on anyone but Erik Bedard coming back to Seattle in the deal, and still no word on whether the two sides were allowed to get extension talks started pre-deal.

Press conference likely Tuesday as the teams are probably awaiting physical results for all players involved.

There's no way that's the package. Jones and Tillman will be in it. I'd be very surprised if Clement was in it, and shocked if Triunfel was. Both of them together? Not a chance.

Take aways:

- MacPhail looks more and more dumb as this thing progresses.

- The Cubs would have had to bankrupt the system to get both Roberts and Bedard. Considering Bedard isn't that much better than Hill, it wouldn't have been worth it, IMO.

- Baltimore fans had better be ready for a long season.

MacPhail may look dumb now, but he might look like a genius in 2-3 years. I agree that it wasn't worth it to try to get both Bedard and Roberts because of the cost in young players. As for the Oriole fans, 2008 will be a long season, but by 2009 or 2010 they could be serious contenders.

Agreed, he might. But in the meantime he is acting like a moran in terms of how he is treating the media. I wonder if he belittled the Chicago media in the same manner - Bruce?

It just didn't make sense. If Bedard were Santana, ARod, or someone of that ilk, then by all means, load up and go for it. But not for Bedard.

Again, could be. But given MacPail's track record in the FA mkt, I would not count on it.

But if you're an O's fan it would have been a long season with Bedard too. At least the O's aren't acting like the White Sox and trying to sell their fans on winning right now. As a fan, if my team can't compete I'd rather suffer through a couple years of watching young talent develop as apposed to a higher priced club that has minimal chance of winning and minimal chance of improving.

isn't it more or less every GM's policy to deny any trades/signings until they're official?

I don't recall many confirming trades before they are complete very often, if at all.

If one of the guys failed their physical, the trade would be off, leaving egg on the face of the GM who declared it prematurely. Not that it would happen in this case.

It sounds like MacPhail (and any other GM who is in this position) is a bit frustrated that private trade discussions are not very private.

He never really seemed to be a get along with the press guy to me. He put up with them but he seems to be slightly uncomfortable dealing with them in situations like this. I don't think what he said was that big of a deal.

Exactly. Anyways, why would a GM not deny the trade when it isn't completed? There's always the chance it can still fall apart. Look at Jacque Jones-to-Florida last summer.
