This has been probably posted already but according to mlb.com the deal is believed to be for 48 million. Nice job by Hendry. That was the numbers i had in mind all along at 12 million per year. Also Fukudome is expecting his first child soon, so he won't come to chicago until next week.

Tomorrow I can look forward to driving to work while listening to Peter Gammons wax philosophic on how this affects the Red Sox.

hilarious :D

I would rather be watching that right now than Petrino's press conference with pig suwie or however the rednecks spell it.

Didn't Meph suggest that Japanese baseball will be close to being on par with the National League next year? I'm not sure if he was serious or thinking out loud, but there might be something to it. I really don't know.

Geez what a gloomy article by Sullivan:

The announcement will come Wednesday, and in a strange twist of fate, Fukudome could be saying hello to the Cubs just as Mark Prior likely will be waving good-bye. While Fukudome was in Japan weighing offers from the Cubs, Padres and Sox, after formally announcing he was leaving Japan, Hendry was back in gloomy Chicago, waiting for an answer while preparing to make a decision on the pitcher once called 'Franchise' by some of his teammates.

Also, I should mention that last season Fukudome's team broke a 53 year championship drought (even though he didn't play), so at least he knows a little about terrible histories.

has anyone told him that the cubs usually suck and haven't won a championship for 100 years? or is that just something he's going to learn as he goes along?

Geez. You sure are negative nancy tonight.

too much optimism and happiness in one thread... someone has to remind people that they still are, after all, the cubs

It's worth noting that 4/48 is an absolute steal if true. Free agents are almost always obscenely overpaid, and the Cubs probably got close to equal value, if not better, for Fukudome.

Back to your regularly scheduled FUKUDOMANIA!!!

"He answers so many questions for us," Hendry said. "He's left-handed. He has a high on-base percentage. He's a great defender with a great arm. He can steal bases. He can hit anywhere in the lineup -- three, two or five."

OK, seriously, somebody pinch me.

Looks like Bruce is fabricating quotes now.

Is that ethical?

 Who is that guy and what did he do with Jim Hendry?

And can I shake his hand?

Meh...out of all that Jim thought the left-handedness was the most important part....

He swings like Ichiro. He seems to lunge at the ball. But he hit a homerun off a guy who looks like a right-handed version of Billy Wagner.

Fwiw, those were 80 MPH changeups on the inner half. He lunges like most japanese hitters but he keeps his hands back well, clears his hips, and can turn on the ball.

What are your thoughts on his offensive game going to the MLB?
