So knowing Hendry, let's guess how this contract is structured....

Year 1: $8.50

Year 2: $1.5 million

Year 3: $18 million

Year 4: $28,499,991.50

...Just trying to balance out all the positive posts

One of Fukudome's biggest boosters is Cubs broadcaster Ron Santo, who now has the envious task of trying to pronounce his name without incurring any fines from the FCC.

"I talked to Pat Hughes about it and told him that's going to be a tough one," Santo said last weekend from his home in Scottsdale, Ariz. "He said, 'Fukudome.' I said, 'Easy for you to say.'"

Imagine Harry trying to get it right.

Only about the third Fukudome story I've written today:

http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=93689

I'm not criticizing Hendry by any means but I thought it was hilarious what the first thing Hendry said about Fukudome was after that he was now a Cub:

"He answers so many questions for us," Hendry said. "He's left-handed. He has a high on-base percentage. He's a great defender with a great arm. He can steal bases. He can hit anywhere in the lineup -- three, two or five."

PECOTA loves Fukudome like the dickens: .289/.401/.504 .303 EqA

I'd buy that for a dollar.

 Um, yea. That would be ridiculous.

Where'd you get a hold of PECOTA on him already, BTW?

come on man, this is the guy NSBB wanted from so far as a couple of years ago, let the man be.

Like I said, I just found it funny that 'He's left handed' was the first thing Hendry said about Fukudome.

Excellent signing Jim. Great job.

Now lets get Roberts and Bedard and call it a season.

BTW - This is from a Brewers message board that made me chuckle:

Be ready from about 500,000 new Japenese Cubs fans now. That's just great.

From the article above, and I couldn't agree more:

…is a pretty good-looking lineup. PECOTA very much likes all Geovany Soto and Felix Pie, by the way, and is reasonably warm on Ronny Cedeno. If the Cubs let these kids play — perhaps integrating Ryan Theriot and Matt Murton in platoons of various kinds — this could quite easily be the best lineup in the National League.

The Padre fans just love us after the signing... :D

"The only

Thing worse than losing out on him is having to hear it from all of the douch Cubs fans out there. God I hope this guy tanks. "

"

The Pads made a fair offer - not the front office's fault that the Cubs overpaid for the guy. And, yeah, they overpaid for him.

And, yeah, I hope he tanks, too. Because I hate the Cubs. A lot."

Do you think Sullivan is even the slightest bit embarrassed by the contrast in stories between the Trib and the Herald?

From the Tribune: Cubs general manager Jim Hendry was not available for comment to confirm the deal...

From the Daily Herald: "He's a Cub, he's a Cub," said Hendry...

Damm, that's awful.

Good job, Bruce!

Yikes - If I learned anything in Intro To Journalism (actually taught by someone who is a sportswriter for the daily herald) it's that things like this are mortal sins and make your paper look dumb.

Hope your professor isn't this guy

Of course the Cubs overpaid for him. What team that honestly thought they had a chance to get a guy wouldn't overpay to get him in this market?

I'm just glad that all the rumors that had the numbers escalating higher everyday while we waited weren't true. The money the Cubs offered probably wasn't much more than Hendry's original offer, with maybe an extra year tacked on.
