If the Reds are looking for catching help, why not expand this to a three team deal with the current rumored players going to Baltimore for Roberts and Hernandez and then flipping Hernandez to the Reds for Freel?

Jeff Zrebiec is saying he thinks the trade goes down sometime within the next ten days.

James, Catonsville: Any updates on the Orioles trying to acquire a middle infielder, given Luis Hernandez's struggles so far in spring training?

Jeff Zrebiec: Nothing yet James. If this long-awaited and debated Brian Roberts deal finally gets done, and I think we all expect it will in the next 10 days or so, the Orioles will essentially fill two needs and create one. Ronny Cedeno, who has been in the Chicago Cubs' proposed package for Roberts since day one, would become the Orioles' everyday shortstop, pushing either Luis Hernandez or Brandon Fahey -- the two current Orioles competing to be the Opening Day shortstop -- to the utility spot. I think both players are more suited for that role at this point of their careers. The Orioles would then need to find a starting second baseman. It's possible that they also get Eric Patterson back from the Cubs, though I haven't heard his name mentioned much recently. The Orioles have already made a potential list of available second basemen, and I think when the Roberts trade goes through, it will be quickly followed by a minor deal to find a veteran replacement for him. Houston's Mark Loretta and the Chicago White Sox's Juan Uribe are the two names that I hear most, but there are others out there.

Apparently DeRosa made some comments about this proposed deal, saying that it's making it difficult for him to concentrate on getting ready with this whole thing hanging over his head.

I swear to God, if we start tanking games in April because this stupid Roberts deal hangs over the club like a black cloud, I'm going to start killing small animals.

I'd like to see the quotes because it sounds unprofessional. He has a job to do. If he doesn't like the rumors he can elect to not answer questions about them (and stop reading the latest gossip as he has confessed to in the past).

Yeah, stop being human, DeRosa!

He can be human on his own time. He has a job to do. Allegedly making excuses about the trade rumors disturbing him, especially after saying as recent as last week that he wouldn't, is just stupid. He should keep those comments to himself.

He's actually having a pretty decent spring, I think he's hitting about .294 and has an obp somwhere around .400. So I don't know that he's making excuses, because there is nothing to make excuses for. It's not like he's having the kind of spring like, oh, I don't know, Derrek Lee? He's not hitting below the Mendoza line.

It doesn't matter. He should remain diplomatic about the whole thing. Roberts may well show up in the next two weeks; there's no reason for DeRosa, or any other player, to start talking about distractions. That's something a manager does to help deflect for the team (which Lou did for the younger players). I like DeRosa but he isn't the type of player who prevents a team from making a move. If the Cubs get Roberts, he will have to deal with it and be a backup. I'm sure DeRo can handle it, which is why I don't like hearing dissension this close to the end of Spring (when the trade could be coming close to fruition). He should just remain cool and not be baited by reporters.

Let's say you have a career, a career you have been working at since you were 5 years old, training and working your tail off, giving it everything you have. Now let's say that your boss has gone publicly back and forth for 4 months saying that he wants to replace you.

If I asked you how that made you feel and you said that you were alright with that, I would question your heart. I like the fact that DeRo hasn't come out and said that he's fine with being a bench player. He believes in his abilities and wants to play. That's called being competitive. If he had rolled over and said he hopes they get Roberts, a lot of people would be on this board saying he's soft, he doesn't have the desire to play.

So if anything I'm glad that he would come out and say that of course he wants to play everyday, and the talks are a little bit of a distraction.

The average person, at XYZ company, would keep his/her mouth shut. I am not denying human frustration its the public display that's unacceptable. There are many ways to view this situation but from a management standpoint; you can't have people outwardly chirping about how unhappy/uncomfortable they are about the current situation (that's something that should be addressed behind closed doors).

In this case, the situation with the Cubs is still fluid. As we all know, there is still a chance Roberts will be added in the next two weeks. It wouldn't be wise for DeRo, or anyone else, to start giving the media reasons to report on problems. Should Roberts arrive, the media will definitely stick a microphone in DeRosa's face and ask him to react to the current situation and to his own previous comments. I think that is a greater risk than the Cubs still having this cloud over them in April...

Comparing DeRosa's situation to the "average person at XYZ company" isn't really fair. The average person at XYZ isn't a public persona with interview requests and reporters following him daily. You are correct that voicing publicly the things DeRosa has said wouldn't go over well in the public world. I could get into a lot of trouble if I talked about every frustration I had with the media and then those frustrations were made public. On the other hand, I can't recall the last time anyone in the media, print or radio, ever gave a rat's ass about my complaints about my job, so for that reason I can bitch and moan to a few co-workers or my wife and leave it at that.

On the other hand, if I were constantly on the radio or being asked about it by a journalist, from time to time, especially if I'm an open person that frequently shoots in a straight-forward manner, I'd probably say things that discretion says would better be left unsaid.

You're taking the comment out of context. The previous poster asked me to relate DeRosa's situation to having worked on a career for a long time only to hear your boss is considering an upgrade. It happens. Also, I wasn't talking about the media in my XYZ Company example (which is why I switched gears to the media in the second paragraph). I was talking about outward frustration in the office--which can be related to this situation.

Again, DeRosa isn't the type of player who will prevent a team from making a move. He's essentially been a career role player so he should know better than giving the media any fodder for columns (as it relates to the possibility of losing a starting role). He explained his position very well at the Cubs Convention and nothing else really needs to be said.

These "experts" or "insiders" keep predicting "in 10 days", "next week", "very soon", "before opening day", etc. When the trade does happen, then you'll see all of them taking credit for calling it right.

Since I like to consider myself an expert, I better get my prediction in. 8 days, 3 hours and 10 minutes from now, Brian Roberts will be a Cub.

7107 posts is a bit absurd.

Not as absurd as the size of your sig pic, wow

I dont have a sig and 7000+ posts is absurd....especially for Brian Roberts....

Vance love the idea of takng back Hernandez back form Baltimore and then flipping him for Freel. Much better than having to take back Payton. Freel is a guy that along with Derosa gives Piniella plenty of options off the bench.

Like I said, the Orioles are crackpots. I can't imagine any good GM humoring them for as long as we have.

You said it, brother.

I can't figure out who is the bigger crackpot though. Angelos for being the master of a sunk ship and unable to give his GM the ability to be.....oh, I don't know, how about a GM??

...or Hendry for being willing to humor these people for this long, causing backlash on his existing team and putting key players' futures up for grabs heading into a season.

All I can say is, the Brewers want this to continue for as long as possible. You can bet the farm on that.

On the Orioles Hangout, some of the posters are proposing names like Votto, Bailey, Bruce, Cuerto, Encarnacion, etc. for Hernandez. #-o

He's an all-star catcher - do you know how rare those are?

yes, that's sarcasm

Ummm....Ummmm....

I'm tapped out. I got nothing left to say.

Come on, buddy. I don't think you need to worry about filtering or straying far from the topic in this thread. You like cheese? I bet Brian Roberts does, too. He can prepare cheese better than Soriano and can serve cheese from both sides of the dish. And I bet Dusty likes cheese but not the fresh cheese because such cheese may not know how Dusty wants it to taste. He even liked cheese when Hank Aaron liked cheese.

Focus ... or don't focus. Just write something. We march onward together. One clumsy band of rumormongers.

well considering that a few of those have been deemed "unready" to play at the major league level, i'm sure Dusty would love to have his GM ship them away for an overrated catcher

Hey Brasky! That last line of yours was WAY to good to pass up (points to new sig!) :clapping:
