I wish someone would blow this stupid thread up.

It would just come back stronger.

Or spawn two threads.

The deal is done, but they don't want to announce it until this thread reaches 300 pages.

A noble act for a noble cause.

Whats the over under on # of pages after the trade is actually announced (if its ever announced)...my guess is that it woudl be suprisingly little...I mean...seriously, how much more can be said about Brian Roberts?

They won't announce the trade, they are going to keep it secret. The trade will happen, they just won't tell anyone and Roberts will play wearing a Ronny Cedeno mask and have to answer questions explaining how he learned to bat left handed so quickly.

So if the season started today, would general manager Jim Hendry be satisfied with his roster?

''No,'' Hendry told the Sun-Times on Sunday. ''We're going to have to add somebody before Opening Day. I can't say for sure because you are going to have to acquire somebody from somewhere else, but we are going to have to add at least another outfielder to be in the mix off the bench -- from the right side.''

''You try to hold off and try to get the best guy you can,'' Hendry said. ''And that's what we're still going to try to do. And the other things, you don't know whether they are going to happen.''

The ''other things'' likely center on the Cubs' hunt for Baltimore Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts, though sources from both sides indicate a deal probably wouldn't be struck until the final days of camp. The Cubs also have interest in Boston Red Sox center fielder Coco Crisp, a switch hitter, and the Texas Rangers' Marlon Byrd, a righty-swinging outfielder who could play center.

Right side, strong side. I don't know if I like the direction this might take us.

Wasn't jim just complaining like two months ago that Murton wasn't left handed so didnt fit in. Well...uhm....if he isn't left handed that means he's right handed. What's up, jim?

Murton can't play CF. Hendry's not looking for a right-handed corner OF, he wants a right handed CF to complement Pie because of Pie's massive splits.

Lou feels he has to bat the CF 8th, Hendry feels he has to get more LH bats but at the same time a RH hitting CF. Why the heck do these guys insist on painting themselves into corners so often?

They should just work on Felix's ability to switch hit. :good:

I like the idea of a Murton/Pie platoon. Pie will play CF against all righties, and then when there is a lefty pitcher Murton can play RF and Fukudome play CF. Fukudome is gonna play CF a few games in ST to see how he looks. I think he will do well in CF. I like this lineup against lefties:

1) Roberts

2) Murton

3) Lee

4) Soriano

5) Ramirez

6) Fukudome

7) Soto

8) Theriot/Derosa

I think that's the best solution, and I wish they would warm up to that idea. Neither Lou or Hendry seemed enthusiastic about the idea though. Lou is just moving Fukudome there as an emergency backup in case a trade falls through.

I definitely agree with you that it would work though. That is a potent lineup against a lefty, and even if you take Roberts out it still is potent. Your 2nd worst hitter is out of the lineup on those days, and your worst hitter is much, much better against left-handers than right-ahnders.

Lets keep the rumors going, I was watching MASN the Anita Marks show which is the O's broadcast channel. They were saying, Marquis, Gallagher, Cedeno and Ceda in the trade. Like I stated before its amazing that names keep changing and this thread just keeps on going................ :yahoo:

Now that's an interesting combination that I don't think we've heard before. I think that is very fair for Roberts and Payton. The Cubs cave on Ceda, but then insist on including Marquis. The Orioles then insist to throw in Payton. I wouldn't even mind too much if the Cubs threw in a lesser included prospect that is outside their top 10 list.

The Daily Herald - Trade rumors involving the Chicago Cubs and Baltimore second-baseman Brian Roberts are still alive,

and it's unsettling to Lou Piniella's players, according to the Daily Herald.

"The one thing here with our camp with these trade rumors all the time, it's been a little unsettling for a lot of these kids here," Manager Lou Piniella said. "It's hard enough. It's not easy for them to come here and read their names all the time. It's not the easiest thing in the world for these kids."

From ESPN Insider:

At some point, when enough weeks have passed without the parties coming to an agreement, you have to think it's more unlikely than likely. Yes, a deal does seem to make sense, but we also know 1) Roberts reportedly is Peter Angelos' favorite player, and 2) the Cubs enter the season as NL Central favorites even without Roberts at second base. Of course, if the Cubs replaced Mark DeRosa with Brian Roberts they would immediately become prohibitive favorites …

Haha. One outfit says it'll happen, another says it probably won't.

It's just a lot of tail wagging at this point. I wish Hendry would just set a deadline and then call the deal off until the trade deadline if it doesn't happen by then. I don't want to rule out a trade at all, but if the Orioles are just going to him & haw forever over it, then I think at some point in time upper management should cut the thing off so as to avoid any possible distraction to the team heading into the season.

There's no reason for this to be hanging over everyone's head come April.

Yeah, Hendry really needs to end this stuff one way or another before opening day. Even if he has to lie and say the talks are officially off (while not actually meaning it), he has to do it. When all the players are talking about it with reporters on a regular basis, that's not good. We don't need those kind of distractions when we're trying to avoid getting off to another bad start.
