According to this, the Cubs have upped the offer to possibly include Jason Marquis. :lol: The author of the article thinks a deal is "almost done."

yay

I love this post by a poster at the end of the story. I hope he was joking:

I hear that the deal is already done but they are waiting to announce it so that they don’t steal the spotlight away from St. Patrick’s Day

Im surprised that Hofpauir hasnt been mentioned in this deal. Its petty obvious that whatever he did this Spring, there wasnt going to be a roster spot for him, and meanwhile, the O's have an aging Kevin Millar as their starting 1B, and while he does the trick for now, hes hardly the type of player whose going to figure into the future of a team who has a loooong rebuilding process ahead of him. Hoff, Cedeno, Gallagher, and Marshall/Veal for Roberts sounds fair to me. We realy dont have much purpose for payton anyway.

While Hauffpauir may be tearing it up this spring, he has absolutely no trade value. He's a player that any team could have claimed. He's a non-roster guy that I think has been a minor league FA at least once. I'm sure his value has risen some this spring, but not enough that he'd be anything more than a throw-in.

You're probably right, but after this spring, and the fact that he isnt getting any younger, it would at least be nice to see him go somwhere he at least has a chance of making the big league roster.

I agree that it would be great for him to get a chance somewhere. He's a class-act and a super guy. He works hard and deserves a shot. I don't think there's a spot for him on the Cubs. But, I don't see him being an asset in a trade based on the fact that teams could have had him for nothing had they wanted him.

There are cases in which a minor leaguer will be traded for just that reason, because the team feels they deserve a shot in the bigs, but not with them. I believe thats how we got the great Freddie Bynum, because Oakland felt he deserved a shot, but they didnt have a spot for him, and thus, the Bynum Era began.

that's not at all what happened. Oakland realized he was not particularly good at baseball but was on their 40 man so they tried to get a warm body in return. there are no parallels here

With regards to all of the Brian Roberts rumors, I didn't know if this article had already been posted. This is my first post on nsbb.

"The Internet rumors don't bother young Cubs pitcher Sean Gallagher. He threw last Friday at the Minor League facility, and there were several scouts watching, including one from the Orioles. It's nothing unusual for Gallagher, who pitched in the Arizona Fall League last October. "They don't call it the Arizona Fall League -- they call it the 'Arizona Scout League,'" Gallagher said. "It seemed like every other game we went to they had a scouts pool. It's 60 to 70 scouts out there".

More inactivity I see. Hooray

Any minute now somebody is going to post a lame "the deal is done but they don't want to announce it on the same day as [insert random current event] joke. It's coming, I can feel it.

The deal is done, but they don't want to announce it until this thread reaches 300 pages.

Whats the over under on # of pages after the trade is actually announced (if its ever announced)...my guess is that it woudl be suprisingly little...I mean...seriously, how much more can be said about Brian Roberts?

Is he a Leo or a Capricorn? Oh, much more can be said...much more indeed.

It can be argued there hasn't been much actually said about Roberts in this thread (just the same repetitive stuff)...pretty much everything else has been discussed, however...

Is he a Leo or a Capricorn? Oh, much more can be said...much more indeed.

He’s a Libra (born on 10/9/77) . . .

So he can be:

Diplomatic and urbane;

Romantic and charming;

Easygoing and sociable; and

Idealistic and peaceable.

But also:

Indecisive and changeable;

Gullible and easily influenced; and

Flirtatious and self-indulgent.

See...now we have probably 4 to 5 more pages of info just from that!

Has anyone mentioned his special relationship with the special needs child that goes to every O game? It actually is a pretty cool thing and I'll bet that young man will be crushed if Roberts is traded.
