What a joke. Way to man up Jim.

Man up and do what? Hold MacPhail's family hostage until he agrees to deal Roberts?

No, man up and and walk away if MacPhail is jerking him around. You realize that we don't HAVE to get Roberts, right? You realize that the Earth will still exist if we walk away, right? What self respecting GM goes after a player for 3 months and a week before opening day still is being jerked around?

Now look at what we have, a distraction and still no Roberts. For this to still be going on is pathetic. There is absolutely no reason for this to still be going on. Good GM's don't get dicked around like this. They give a final offer and walk away. Did the Red Sox humor the Twins for 3 months when they asked for Ellsbury and Lester? No, they told them they could have one or the other and walked away. Did the Yankees get jerked around for 3 months when the Twins asked for Hughes and Kennedy? No, they told the Twins to eat it and pulled the original offer off the table while they were at is. As badnews has said, that's how sane organizations handle things. Not to mention those teams were even bidding against other teams. We're not even competing with another team for Roberts services anymore, we're just getting jerked around. It reminds me of a dude getting cheated on by his girl, still wanting to be with her, and then waiting anxiously for his cell phone to ring so he can find out if she still loves him or if she wants to be with the new guy she's banging. Grow a sack and act like a man.

I am sorry, but your comment is stupid.

You're right, it's stupid for me to expect a negotiation to not go 3 months and create a distraction right before the season starts. I'm completely unrealistic for expecting that.

DexterMorgan: Man, all you gotta do is find a girl that looks just like her, nail her, and then dump her, man. Get her of your mind.

Lloyd Dobler:I got a question. If you know so much about women, how come you're here at like the NSBB message board on a Saturday night completely alone drinking beers with no women anywhere?

DexterMorgan: By choice, man.

As much as getting Roberts could be an upgrade, at this point the Cubs should move on. Go get an SS, instead, and make Theriot your utility guy on the bench.

I'm at work, that's why I'm here. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't you posting here right now as well? Exactly. So what's your excuse?

Anyways, it would be more helpful if you'd actually stay on topic as opposed to resorting to meaningless insults and weak attempts at humor.

Sullivan's title makes it seem like the trade won't happen, but reading the quote from Lou kind of sounds like he thinks it will happen, and Sullivan is just pulling up some old quotes from MacPhail if i'm not mistaken:

MESA, Ariz. - While the Cubs would like to get a deal for Baltimore's Brian Roberts done by the end of spring training, the Orioles have no deadline on moving their second baseman.

"I'm not much on putting deadlines on myself or other people for that matter," Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail told the Baltimore Sun. "You always evaluate things on if you perceive them to be in your best interest or not. It's that simple. I would expect the Cubs or any other team for that matter to act in their own self interest."

Ronny Cedeno, Sean Gallagher, Sean Marshall, Micah Hoffpauir and Donald Veal are among the young Cubs whose names have been rumored in a potential deal. The Cubs are getting tired of waiting for Baltimore to make a decision and may have to go to Plan B.

"Whatever happens on the trade front is going to happen," manager Lou Piniella said. "But we're preparing here like nothing is going to happen."

Again, when people can no longer argue their case, they turn to insults. Instead of insulting me, why don't you attempt to refute the things I say?

I don't see how any person who has paid attention to the way this offseason has gone down can possibly say Hendry hasn't gotten jerked around. How can you possibly say that this isn't a disctraction right now? Last I checked, distractions like this are not a good thing. Why am I criticized for stating the obvious? Are you Jim Hendry or something?

You're right, better to just stop listening:

"No, Andy, I am not listening anymore. Piss off - you had your chance. I don't care how good a deal you offer me. You are testing my manhood and I won't have it! Mine is bigger than yours is!!!!"

The sensible approach.

Whether or not this is a "distraction" is a dumb consideration at this point. You're a pro making millions - if it is going to make the team better, then it is going to make the team better. Play through it for a while. Its not like we are in a pennant race right now. Its freaking ST, when half of every team is fighting for a job.

Half of every team? Now that's an exaggeration if I've ever heard of one.

I'm with dexter on this one, to a degree. I don't think Hendry is a girl because a deal hasn't gotten done yet but for this to still be dragging on is silly. At some point (you would think early on), one of the sides has to say "here's my offer, take it or don't call me about this again." Three months, or however long it's been, is an insanely long time to be talking about the same player.

Until late June when the rumors resurface.

Proof in defense of the "Out of town beat writers should stick to their own beats" argument:

The expectation is that the Cubs will eventually ship off starter Jason Marquis to Boston for center fielder Coco Crisp. Chicago has clearly soured on Felix Pie. It wouldn't be a surprise to see Pie included in the Brian Roberts deal with Baltimore.

This quote should be used anytime someone (like Sam Smith) writes about how newspaper men are "real journalists" who have journalistic standards that separate them from bloggers.

2 birds with one stone?

Heard this: If the Cubs finish their deal for Brian Roberts, or trade for Felipe Lopez, Mark DeRosa will want an opportunity to compete for the everyday job at shortstop.

I'm actually starting to believe this may be the case. I could see both of those moves happening. Don't know that I would agree with either, but sadly I see it coming to that if it's gonna happen at all.

Except for the fact that, since the Orioles traded for Adam Jones and have Markakis in right, they have virtually no position for Pie. My feeling is that this writer is just using rumors from months ago to fill column space.

Pie could be sent to the minors. Markakis could play 1B. Luke Scott could DH or play 1B. Pie/Jones could play LF.

I was being purposefully melodramatic to illustrate a point.

I don't disagree that this whole thing is unusual and silly. But the notion that Hendry is being "less than a man" and is dumb.

I am more and more convinced that Lou does not want to start Pie at all. Maybe as a late inning defensive replacement.

His tone and demeanor yesterday when he said his biggest concern in CF made me think that he wants a starter in CF, not just a RH platoon.

I think Crisp would be an every day player with Lou.

I don't agree with this at all, but he knows a hell of a lot more about baseball than I do...
