the only reason lou/hendry want roberts is because he solves the leadoff issue. He gets on base at about a .380 clip & stole 50 bases last year. Period. They desparately want Soriano out of the leadoff slot. Plain & simple. They view it as critical for the overall success of the offense as anything & I agree w/ them. I'm all for Roberts at the top followed by Fukodome & then Lee, Aram & Soriano. Greene would be another great addition w/ his penchance for power at a low power position. The moves I would make in this order are: Roberts, Nathan & Greene. We clearly missed the boat on Haren as he could have been had cheaply. I'm not a big Burnett fan for health/salary reasons and am not sold on Blanton yet as a top 3 guy.

Please stop trying to add validity to your statements with "the Cubs believe it and so do I..." This isn't giving your idea anymore credence (especially when the statement can be debated). The Cubs want Roberts because he is left handed. Period.

Can we kill this thread?

And since there is so much crap in here, I thought it would be a good place to waste a post for this....

200th POST, YEAH!!! I'm a big man now....right.

Why don't we sign Mike Sweeney for a bat off the bench? He's still available and has a career .369 OBP/.492 SLG

Eh, I don't think Hendry will like his lack of flexibility when it comes to moving around the field. He can play 1st base and the corner outfield positions, I doubt anything beyond that. It'd be nice to have another bat, but he'd basically be a second Daryle Ward.

Mike Sweeney would be worse than Ward in the corner OF.

i don't know if this has been posted before, but i found it interesting and somewhat promising...

"He's got a wealth of athletic ability," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said of Cedeno. "He's got a good arm, he's strong, he can run. It's about time he put it together and fulfilled his promise. I like Cedeno, I really do. I want to see him get serious about baseball."

please kick theriot's behind in ST and earn the starting job cedeno!

You guys think Cedeno could get some of the CF duty against tough Lefties? I have no idea if he's any good in center, but if he's serviceable, that would further the chance of Cedeno being a valuable member of the team.

Jeff Zrebiec (Baltimore Sun) was on XM Radio saying the chance of the Bedard trade is 70/30 and Roberts after is a "possibility" yet better than a 50% chance.

Also, on Roberts: Will NOT make assumption that once Bedard goes, Roberts goes. Does not see it being that quick, if at all. Angelos may say, "OK Andy, I gave you one with Bedard, I'm keeping Roberts".

I can just picture Angelos saying that

I don't know who to believe anymore.

We have a huge hole @ SS, regardless of what our organization thinks about Theriot. I expect it will become apparent to even them if Theriot is given the starting job.

Kenney, assuming Roberts was one of the deals he was talking about.

I think thats rather obvious. Lou has shown no real signs of sticking with a crappy player when he has a better option floating around.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm going to actually feel disappointed if this issue gets resolved one way or another anytime soon. I honestly can't imagine my life without this thread.

FWIW...PECOTA takes on Roberts vs. DeRosa

Roberts 651PA 14HR SB 35/43 (81%) .284/.366/.439	Eq .282/.367/.453 EqA .293 MLVR 0.043 VORP 33.5	WARP 6.6

DeRosa	488PA 12HR SB 3/5 .286/.360/.439	Eq .280/.354/.430	EqA .270 MLVR 0.074	VORP 18.9	WARP 3.5

VORP (offense only in runs) and WARP (Offense + defense in wins) are cumulative stats. Roberts projection is for about 180 more PA. Assuming you "add" the PA missed to DeRosa's WARP you end up around 4.6, making Roberts about 2 wins better. (DeRosa is unlikely to get leadoff hitter amounts of PA, but...)

MLVr is a rate stat that looks at runs/g added by that player in an otherwise average lineup. Roberts has an edge here, as well as EqA - an indication of total offensive contribution including baserunning.

Add this to the potential use of DeRosa's line in a super-sub role, and ???? How much would the loss of the traded pieces mean to the pitching side? All advantage is off if Pie is traded away (at least by PECOTA prediction).

I think we are likely very close to Brewers in the NLC, and a two game swing may be the difference. I'm still not sure how to value a Roberts trade.

One extra point is there is no way DeRosa is going to make it to 650 PA even if he did bat leadoff. He wore down in 2006 and was very tired in 2007, and had less than 600 PA both years. So you can probably take .3 or .4 off DeRosa's adjusted production because I don't see much of a chance he makes it over 600 this year either.

That nails it about right though. Add in .6 or .7 wins or so with DeRosa being the supersub, and you get about a 3 win difference overall. Then the question simply becomes is how much 3 wins is worth in terms of prospects.

Damn DeRosa for not being a good SS. Those 3 wins at 2b and the win increase of DeRosa over Theriot at SS would be real nice.

I posted this in another thread but it belongs in the catch-all.

Hendry just said, on CTL, that he inquired about Santana through the Twins and was told from the organization (because he did not have the right to contact the player directly, that Johan would only waive his NTC for a team in the East that trained in FL.

BTW, he also said that the Cubs have no intentions of trading DeRosa even if they acquire another player (read Roberts). There goes that DeRosa rumor...

Lou just said there will be competition in CF with his "athletic kids." Pie/Fuld and don't be surprised if Cedeno gets a look in center. Besides that, Lou gave the standard manager line about being happy with the guys they have... Also said he wants to see what Dempster and Lieber have in ST.

The Orioles will need an innings-eater if they trade Erik Bedard, and the addition of Cubs righty Jason Marquis in a package for second baseman Brian Roberts could enable them to demand better prospects from Chicago. Marquis' three-year, $21 million contract is back-loaded — he's earning $6.375 this season and $9.875 million in 2009. It is doubtful the Cubs would include Felix Pie in a deal for Roberts; Pie could be their center fielder for the next six years.

I don't really know how much better of prospects they'd get. Gally is our best pitching prospect. Maybe they are buying into the Colvin is a very good prospect rumor that has floated around the baseball circle recently, and would take him instead of Murton or something?

Probably Marquis, plus two of Gallagher, Colvin, Veal... maybe Ceda.
