My brother Bilo just called and said ESPN radio in Denver is reporting Matsui just signed with the Cubs for 3 years 14 million. If this is true, I want an explanation Jim. I want it now.

Well if I've learned anything from being on-line, it is this: if it's on the internet it must be true.

No less a reliable source than "Cubs Hot Stove" has confirmed it. Case closed.

The sad thing is, when the news of this signing finally does come to fruition, people like "Cubs Hot Stove" will be able to congratulate themselves for breaking the news and getting it first...as if it takes a real Nostradamus to predict Jim Hendry's idiotic tendencies.

Sounds like he got it from the same source we did.

I'm not believing anything until I get confirmation from a more reliable source.

Where can I find Matsui's Pitches per bat stats for the last few years?

It's in his ESPN stats. Here are the numbers:

2004: 3.97

2005: 3.69

2006 (with Mets): 3.96

2006 (with Col): 4.04

2007: 4.02

Those numbers are surprising to me. That's well above average in P/PA, and yet he has an average to below average walk rate.

What are his "fouled off pitches per plate appearance" numbers? I haven't watched a ton of Matsui ABs in my life, but maybe he swings at damn near everything, but just fouls most of it off.

....and finally grounds weakly to 2nd.

I hope this isn't true.

I'm curious about his swing and miss ratio. That looks like he doesn't do it that often given the small amount of walks and P/PA.

Umm....

Richard Justice[/url]"]Kaz Matsui has agreed to a three-year, $14-million deal with the Cubs, according to a Denver radio station. I don't know if the report is true, but I'm guessing the Astros weren't willing to spend that much. The Rockies wanted Matsui back, but offered only $7 million over two years. I love Matsui's speed and defensive skills, but his home/road splits were frightening. He hit .330 at Coors Field, .249 on the road.

Maybe the radio report was true. Crap.

I don't see how that adds much to the equation. He's just taking a radio report from last night and running with it. He even admits he has no source on it. The fact that it's been 18 hours since that radio report started and there is still no report from anyone else makes it seriously questionable.
