Levine reported that Hendry is willing to give Matsui a 3 year deal to get it done. What is wrong with him? Why is this guy still employed!?! He's going to have a 120 mil payroll and we're not guaranteed SQUAT!

"PrimeTime"]So we get Infante,Now HOT pursuit for Matsui,Then it'll be signing Podsednik to seal off a very productive and awsome offseason...

It'll be a fun 2008 if this is true.

It boggles my mind that after all his repeated misses, Hendry is still looking to sign utility guys to multi-million dollar 3 year deals. My mind is literally boggled.

Why in the world would any team give that kind of money to part-time players who aren't any good to begin with? Why waste millions on role players when they are so easily replacable?

Spend the money on guys that make a difference Jim. You can't tout the value of a minor league system that produces nothing but role players, and then spend money on "proven veterans" because you don't trust the kids to fill roles. When you fail so miserably at producing your own stars, you have to buy them from others, and that costs money. Money you should not spend on crap.

The Tribune blows. They suck for keeping Hendry as GM over the past couple of years, even after Hendry has done nothing with the high payroll he's had to work with. They suck even more for dragging their feet on the sale of the team.

Seriously, how in the world does Hendry think this is a good idea? What an idiot.

Denver Post[/url]"]Meanwhile, the Cubs and Astros have pursued second baseman Kazuo Matsui aggressively and have offered more money than the Rockies. He could sign with either team as early as next week.

Wow... Can Houston please save Hendry from himself??

yeah, right. you know hendry is going to outbid houston. it's inevitable.

While I don't like the idea of another rich, three year contract to a player we don't need....Matsui was actually pretty good last year.

Negative ghostrider. Matsui was bad as usual.

No...no he wasn't. An 87 OPS+ and a .638 OPS away from Coors Field does not scream "let's give this 32-year old second baseman a 3 year deal." If Matsui could play an above average SS defensively, then MAYBE you could begin to justify him as an upgrade over Theriot, but Kaz plays 2B exclusively. This move is literally [expletive].

I just do not understand what Hendry is trying to accomplish here. Maybe he has something bigger in the works for the GM meetings next week that would require him to trade MIFers like Theriot? Otherwise this makes no sense.

IMO he's looking for the "perfect" number 2 hitter.

Which is as stupid and misguided as his pursuit of the stereotypical leadoff hitter. The Cubs need hitters, not 2 hitters.

I ain't a doubting that jcf. Give Jim a call and tell him this please.

I think the reckless pursuit of Kaz has everything to do with Fukudome and little to do with finding a competent player.

Then maybe he should spend his time convincing Fukudome to not stay in Japan with the Giants

That's an idea worth exploring.
