I'm not sure why this is a good thing, Lou wants a left-handed hitting middle infielder with speed and now with KazMat off the list that means they will be looking at guys like Felipe Lopez and Cristian Guzman.... :-&

Sorry I'm late to this party. I have an answer to this riddle, though.

Eric Patterson.

I don't think they're looking for a LF.

Just stick him back at 2B. He's not that bad.

Tell that to the Cubs.

You must not have seen him play there. I saw him in Iowa and he is that bad. They would be better off sticking Soriano back at 2B and looking for a LF and RF.

Oh thank you merciful G-d!

So now Wade is G-d?

He is, at the least, an instrument thereof.

Astro fans may consider him the tool of the devil.

OK Mr. Hendry, now go out there and get us fans a banger who can help this team win.

According to ESPN, Matsui is in Houston and has passed his physical. The signing should be officially announced by the Astros tomorrow.

Link.

KRIV-TV reported on its Web site Saturday that Matsui, who arrived in Houston on Friday, has passed his team physical, clearing the way for the team to announce his signing Sunday. According to the Fox affiliate in Houston, the Astros and Matsui have agreed to a three-year deal worth more than $15 million.

It's official:

Kaz Matsui-2B-Astros Dec. 2 - 5:08 pm et

Astros signed second baseman Kaz Matsui, who had been with the Rockies, to a three-year, $16.5 million contract.

Matsui gets an extra $1.5 million from what was originally reported. "Kaz is an ideal fit for our club," Astros GM Ed Wade said. "Kaz runs extremely well. He steals bases, moves runners and takes the extra base. He plays the game the right way." Getting redundant already? He's also injury-prone, he doesn't hit lefties and his career high in RBI is 44. The Astros probably won't platoon both Michael Bourn and Matsui, so they're going to be very weak at the top of the order against southpaws. Lance Berkman, like Matsui, is a switch-hitter who is much better against righties.

Edit: I just noticed that they gave him more money than initially reported. Nice signing there, Wade.

It sounds like Hendry and Wade got together and wrote out what they'd say about Matsui if he was signed with the understanding that whoever actually won the bidding would get to say it.

Let us count our blessings that it is not the Cubs who would otherwise suffer with Matsui in the line up. Thank you Astros!

Great news on not signing Matsui. Now I know how the British must have felt at the end of WWII when they didn't sign Matsui to play 2nd base.

The British were involved in WWII?

You know that photo of Chamberlain holding what everyone thought was the Munich Accord? That was a contract offer for Matsui.
