According to Tracy Ringolsby of the Rocky Mountain News, the Astros and Kaz Matsui are close to a deal.

It's been a bad month for Lance Berkman owners. The Astros are going to have Michael Bourn leading off and Matsui likely batting second most of the time. Matsui's career OBP away from Coors Field is .308. Chris Burke is easily the better bet offensively, though Matsui is clearly superior defensively. A platoon, with Matsui sitting against lefties, could be rather productive. Still, the Astros again will disappoint when it comes to getting guys on base for Berkman.

Oh, I am so very happy. Leave it to a GM worse than ours to keep our GM from making a bad signing.

With this news, of course, Hendry being so focused on wanting speed and a left-handed bat, he will now overpay for Carl Crawford.

Rosenthal says he's been told the Astros are close to signing Geoff Blum so his Matsui story might actually be true. At least he's not just engaging in idle speculation this time.

Houston Chronicle reporter Richard Justice can be heard at the following link today (and every day) at 10:00 a.m.

That may be a good opportunity to get an update on Kaz Matsui.

Justice is on the radio still "reporting" that the Astros are going to sign Matsui.

It doesn't seem that he has any information beyond the Ringolsby blurb, though.

I'm off to NY for Thanksgiving. My family there are big Met fans, and if we sign Matsui I can expect them to be sympathetic to my rantings.

Geoff Blum-2B- Astros Nov. 20 - 2:14 pm et

Astros signed infielder Geoff Blum, who had been with the Padres, to a one-year, $1.1 million contract with an option for 2009.

Blum was the same player as always last year, but after signing him to one-year deals three straight seasons, the Padres didn't want him back, suggesting that something happened behind the scenes. Much like the Astros had a brighter future before making Ed Wade their GM, Blum was a better fit for Houston before the reported agreement with Kaz Matsui. Like Matsui, Blum is a switch-hitter who fares better from the left side of the plate. If the Astros are going to trade Chris Burke, it'd make more sense to employ a right-handed-hitting utilityman to platoon with Matsui.

Rotoworld is assuming the Justice/Ringolsby report is dogma?

If Hendry is insistent on getting a 2B with speed he should look into Burke. Given consistent playing time he could be a decent option. The track record is there at the college and minor league level.

Who's side are you on? We have enough 2B, but no SS.

Hence the, "If Hendry" disclaimer.

I agree with you, but it looks like Hendry is looking at 2B from everything that has been reported.

Cubs are still in the Matsui sweepstakes. I'd make it better than 50-50 that they get him. But that's as things stand now.

That sucks, thanks for the update. Any hint from Hendry that he's looking to trade for OF help?

Yes, he is looking to trade for outfield help. Got to find a team that's willing to get a deal done.

Hendry's going to build us another winner with these brilliant movies of his.

I would think a Hendry movie would be similarly difficult to follow, although potentially quite high on the unintentional comedy scale.

Any justification as to why?

Is the report true Bruce that Hendry wants Matsui to be the full-time starter at second and move DeRosa to a utility player? Does he want either one of them to be the SS?

Perhaps because when Hendry has his eyes on the wrong man, he usually is able to get him.
