I am just going insane with Hendry's thought process.

Does he have a thought process?

All right, I'm going to delude myself for a moment and I hope you'll all indulge me. There is no published report beyond what the Denver Post had. None of the Chicago papers had anything on this travesty of a signing today. Could it be that Kap saw the Denver Post post and that was it?

Maybe there's nothing to this beyond that one report. Please, oh please let that be the only thing out there connecting Matsui and the Cubs.

Step one: Determine the worst possible transaction.

Step two: Execute said transaction.

The Denver Post article came out after Kaplan was on the radio last night.

I keep hoping Bruce will come to this thread and squash this rumor. Of course, I'm fully prepared for the reality of Kaz Matsuii spending 3 years with the Cubs.

This move baffles me. DeRosa is fine as a 2b. The only explanation for this move is if the Cubs want Matsui to play SS. Even then, I'm not that enamored with the move.

Just thinking out loud, but what if the Cubs are trying to swing a bigger deal with another team and that team is insisting on DeRosa being part of the package?

That might explain it some, but I find it a bit far-fetched. I guess we'll have to wait and see how it plays out, but if we sign Matsui, I'm going to find some new combinations of profanity.

then after that deal goes through, you go out and find a 2B better than Matsui

That's none other Ronny Cedeño in the Venezuela Winter League.

I seem to recall a few years ago Choi doing well in his winter league.

I don't recall that...

it's true

I remember all the sigs and threads about Choi vs. Lee in 2004. Funny stuff.

What in God's green earth are the Cubs going to do with five middle infielders?

I think someone mentioned this yesterday; If Fukudome needs a baby tender that much the Cubs could hire him a personal assistant for $75 K (that's about 200,000,000 yen). Jesu Christi, I the Cubs annoy me.

Seriously, this has to be the dumbest move in the long line of dumb moves exhibited by Hendry (if it is true).

It would have to be for a heck of an improvement somewhere since the downgrade at 2b is not exactly in the best interests of the team.

In anticipation of the formal announcement:

Baseball's worst GM strikes again!

This has to have something to do with Fukudome doesn't it? Not that it justifies it....but if he plays SS, you stick Fukudome in CF..and it allows us to trade Cedeno, Pie and others for a power bat in RF...the "MAYBE" its not a horrible plan..

So this is what Hendry is copying from the Red Sox, huh? They sign one Japanese guy to help out the bigger name, and they won the World Series. Must copy them.

Now if only Kaz could put up a 29.3 VORP like Okajima.

The Cubs don't have nearly enough payroll for all that (that's 30 million added between CF, RF, and SS and the Cubs don't have nearly that much money). If one of Matsui or DeRosa plays SS (creating a Matsui/Theriot platoon), and it lures Fukudome over, it's not horrible. It's still not a great situation, but it's not doom and gloom either. If Matsui and DeRosa end up sharing time at 2nd, or if Fukudome doesn't come, then it become horrible.

No matter how much you distrust Hendry he has to be building up to make a major trade, he can't be this ignorant. Now, you might not like who he is going to trade for but we also have been pleasantly surprised with some of his deals as well. It's only November and there is a lot of time and Hendry struck quickly last year so he may take more time this off season.

what has hendry done to give you such confidence?

Yes he can.

What bigger trade can the Cubs make without making them worse? If they trade Lee, Aramis, Z, or Hill at best they can hope to get the same level of potential production. None of the prospects are all that attractive, except for Pie (who doesn't love Pie?). They don't have a whole lot to bargin with. Who are they going to get with DeRosa + prospects? Marmol + prospects? DeRosaa + Marmol + prospects? Why does Fukudome need a caddy?

Because this build up of middle infielders just doesn't make sense. If this Matsui thing is even true.

Honestly I don't pretend to know other than it's fun to speculate what they can get for X and Y players. There are other GMs and scouts that may see something in a Cub player young or old that would help their team. Somebody could be making a salary dump that we don't know about and Hendry does and he's involved in talks with them and has to acquire a player first (possibly Matsui) to cover himself. I'm not a big Hendry fan but this just doesn't add up.
