Were Matsui and Fukudome good buddies or something? Was signing Matsui a requirement to get Fukudome to come here?

Because if the Cubs sign Matsui and they DON'T get Fukudome, I'm driving to Chicago and kicking someone's ass.

I'll come and hold him down until you get tired and I'll take over the ass beating

no but seriously what is the point of all this? at the middle infield we now have:

theriot ss/2b

cedeno ss/2b

fontenot 2b/terrible ss

matsui 2b/terrible ss

derosa 2b/terrible ss

probably the two best hitters here are derosa and matsui, but neither one will play ss. You're still left with a black hole at SS and a surplus of mediocre middle infielders. I fear that this is being done with the intention of something really stupid, like playing DeRosa a lot in RF and Matsui at 2B.

hopefully this move at least knocks soranio out of the leadoff spot.

I don't really expect Matsui to be a regular starter. He doesn't have a place to play.

If it's true that he's getting a 3-year deal, he's going to be starting somewhere. Bench players don't usually get 3-year deals.

yeah, all japanese people are friends with each other aren't they?

Funny, but I wasn't joking. Were these guys teammates? School buddies? There had to be some sort of inspiration to sign Matsui to that kind of contract.

pitchers with ERAs over 6 don't usually get 3-year $21M deals either

Are you refusing to acknowledge we just traded for Omar Infante, or did you just forget? :D

Punch Drunk: "Hey, Kohs-kay! Guess who I just signed?"

Kosuke: "Who?"

Punch Drunk: "Kazuo Matsui."

Kosuke: "That SOB? That rat bastard slept with my wife! Screw this - I'm staying in Japan."

Punch Drunk: "D'oh!"

You just ruined days of careful memory suppression. Thanks!

If Brendan Harris and Jeff Keppinger and Mark Loretta can all still play SS, I suppose one of DeRosa or Matsui can too. Unfortunately, most of those teams these guys play for are bottom feeder teams.

So has anyone actually heard this on the radio or are we just going off message board reports?

This was what spawned the latest rant.

Ready for some bad news?

Kaplan was on WGN radio just a little while ago and said that the Cubs were "approaching a deal" with Matsui. No word on the length or money of the contract.

once again it's the baseball offseason and i find myself wanting to kick hendry in the balls

Remember that one game earlier in the year where the Cubs were shorthanded in the infield?

Fear no more.

I was listening when Kaplan said it. It's true.

Matsui had a .342 OBP last season / .304 away from Coors Field. Soriano had a .337 OBP last season.

Excellent idea!

Let's give one of MLB's worst hitters lots of plate appearances and one of our best hitters fewer.

Brilliant!
