The ONLY way this signing because a benefit or anything is if it gets Fukudome here..
It is still not a benefit. He isn't playing for free.

I really cannot understand this. Baseball shouldn't be a fraternity club.

It might help Fukudome transition better. If it's for a few pennies, why not. if its 3 years 12 mil...jim hendry's probably murdered before sundown, unfortunately.

Seriously, Is Hendry on drugs? If thousands of people disagree with you and say it's a bad signing or target, Why in the blue hell do you go after the guy? We already are stacked in the infield anyway..He has to be the stupiest GM of all time. You don't win a world series by adding Kaz Freakin Matsui to the team..Im about to throw my monitor out the window at work after reading this garbage. I HATE YOU HENDRY

I just don't understand Hendry's logic on this. Where is Matsui going to play? Is he going to split time with Theriot at SS? Matsui has shown he's not capable of being a good shortstop in his time with the Mets. That's why he was moved to 2b. So does that mean Matsui is going to take over 2b? That seems like the most likely option, but why do you replace DeRosa with an inferior player? Just because he has some speed? Does this mean DeRosa is on the trading block, or is DeRosa just going to be some super utility player?

I just don't understand. The only thing I do understand is that this sale of the Cubs needs to move faster because Hendry and Co. need to be replaced already. They have no idea what they're doing.

Hopefully this means they think DeRosa can play SS, which puts DeRosa at SS/Matsui at 2nd against RHP, and Theriot at SS/DeRosa at 2nd against LHP.

There is one thing that is true. If you're going to have DeRosa playing 3rd and the OF on any kind of a regular basis, you need another MIF. Matsui basically replaces Fontenot's spot on the roster, which is an upgrade, although how much of one remains a question.

Given how many times DeRosa was tried at SS during spring training and how many non-game situations he tried SS during the season, I think it's clear the Cubs don't believe he can play SS.

Poorly worded. He was referring to the contract.

We have been hearing some good things come out so far this offseason. Marquis on the block, Interest in trading Jones, Hendry's recognition that the Cubs need to add OBP to the lineup, the Cubs interest in Fukudome....etc.

Just when you think maybe Hendry has a clue, you hear this ridiculous rumor about Matsui and a possible 3 year deal. I refuse to believe that any person in his/her right mind would offer Matsui a 3 year deal. My hope is that Matsui's agent is trying his best to get Colorado to pony up the cash, by using the Cubs as competitors. The Cubs have so many more needs on the team than a light non-hitting 2b.

But, we do all agree that the Cubs need to upgrade offensively at SS, right?

So, if it's not Matsui, and it's not ARod, and DeRosa can't make the shift, who is it?

Sometimes there just aren't any realistic options out there. I'd like Ronny Cedeno, personally.

It's Tejada. He's gonna get traded for way less than he's worth. The Orioles are idiots.

Why?

because he has nothing left to prove at aaa anymore and he's probably going to put up better numbers than theriot with better defense.

What he said. Cedeno won't be great, but he'll be an in-house improvement in all likelyhood.

Ronny may never amount to anything, but at least he has a chance to be good. Theriot doesn't.

Probably, but if it's not Tejada, it should be Cedeno for at least the first 2 months of the season.

I'd have to see it to believe it with Tejada. Angelos has blocked Tejada trades so many times that I can't believe he would ok a Tejada trade now for less than he's worth.

Unfortunately I heard the Cubs offered or are set to offer 3 years, $20M.

Hey, what's another bad back-loaded contract anyway?

Key word is "upgrade". Matsui is arguably not an upgrade offensively at SS over Theriot. Even if you were to argue that he were an upgrade, you would be out of your mind to argue that he is worth spending $3- 4MM over Theriot. This is a move that make absolutely no sense at all.

From all the reports, it sound like this is the case of Hendry bidding against himself once again. The new GM is going to be stuck with alot of bad contracts.

Stupid question, but when can free agents actually be signed?

This coming Tuesday.

So in addition to a horrible contract, will the Cubs lose a draft pick for signing Matsui?

No.
