I like DeRosa but does anyone else wish they'd shown more interest in Iwamura for 2b last year? He has everything they like about Matsui (lefty, Japanese, good speed) with the added bonus that he doesn't suck ass.

Doesn't Iwamura play third?

I'm sure he could play 2nd.

Hes moving over to 2nd next year to make room for Longoria.

I can't take this. I keep on returning to see if there is resolution. Whatever happens does not change the fact that Hendry wants Matsui, and if he does not get him he will attempt to do equally destructive things.

If it has anything to do with getting Fukudome, or betters the chances of getting Fukudome - Kaz Matsui is not going to hurt this team.

Uh, yes he will. Matsui will still be the same lousy player with our without Fukudome. It would be solving one hole by creating another.

And if Hendry and Co. are so worried about Fukodome coming that they would go after Matsui, here's a thought:

Get a hold of Fukodome's people and tell them they'll pay his interpreter and or personal assistant to come over here with him. That would help a whole hell of a lot more and would give the Cubs one less mediocre infielder.

I imagine that will happen whether the Cubs sign Matsui or not.

Is that not standard? It certainly should be in free agent negotiations with Japanese players. Pay them, their interpreters, give their girlfriends H1b visas for their special talents, etc

If ifs and buts were candy and nuts every day would be Christmas.

how does giving a three-year contract to a mediocre (putting it nicely) back-up infielder not hurt this team? Fukudome isn't Arod. it's not worth it.

over-paying bad players to fill holes that don't exist most definitely hurts the team.

Exactly. From what I've heard it will cost 3-4 years and at least 10-12 per to get Fukudome, I don't want to figure in an extra 4 mil per for Matsui. If that's what they're thinking, using Matsui to pull in Fukudome, just give Fukudome an extra 2 mil per and don't sign Matsui.

3/40 for Fukudome>>>>3/30 for Fukudome and 3/12 for Matsui. Sure you're spending more for Fukudome, but the chances of him sucking is less than Matsui sucking and creating a hole that isn't already there.

It seems extremely unlikely that the Cubs are after Matsui as an additional enticement for Kosuke to sign here. The Cubs probably consider any benefit in that regard to be "gravy".

The Cubs simply like Matsui.

Which is why it's so depressing.

That just makes me sad

I get scared every time I open this thread. I wish the Astros would just sign him already.

Don't worry, the title will change if the Cubs sign him so you'll be able to commit suicide long before getting this far

My brother Bilo just called and said ESPN radio in Denver is reporting Matsui just signed with the Cubs for 3 years 14 million. If this is true, I want an explanation Jim. I want it now.

I don't know if it's true. I saw the prosportsdaily thread and am listening in to ESPN radio in Denver. They didn't mention anything about the signing in the latest Sportscenter Update. I'm guessing it's not true.
