What does this do to Murton Bruce? It seems he's on the poopy list.

Good question. I haven't heard his name much. They could trade him or use him as a fourth outfielder. I'll ask as I get set to go to Nashville.

It's funny to me because of all the players the Cubs have on their team, Murton seems to be the most like Lou when he was a player, stat wise.

Lou sees Murton as nothing more than a bench player. At this point I don't think that's even debatable.

If the Cubs had 3 OF's that were better I'd be pretty happy about the OF situation.

I will now attempt to summarize my feelings and that of pretty much all of NSBB on this matter in a single smilie:

why is hendry looking to decrease the playing time of his one good 2b?

I think that DeRosa's worth is in his versatility and ability to hit no matter where he is playing. He was our best 2B last year, but you can pretty much count on him to be in the lineup everyday no matter where he is playing on the field.

If the Cubs signed Matsui, I have a feeling it is related to the chances of getting Fukudome. Even if they didn't get Fukudome, they are better with Matsui at 2B and DeRosa playing - just at different positions. In my opinion, of course.

We'll see how it plays out.

Why why why do we have to marginalize DeRosa's bat by putting him at a defensive position where more offense is expected. DeRosa is a good hitter for a 2B. He's below average at every other position he'd be seeing time at in his super-sub role. Here's a brilliant idea, Flippin leave DeRosa at 2B. Then when he is spelling 3B(the only position he should be the primary backup at), you put one of the other 16 2nd basemen already on the g-damn team at 2nd base. Moving DeRosa off 2nd so he can play RF, LF, and 1B 15 times a year when you already have Daryle Ward and Matt Murton on the team might just be one of the dumbest moves in Hendry's illustrious history of dumb moves.

Second base. I'm sure they'll say this: He and DeRosa will share time there, probably with Matsui getting most of the time there. He's a switch hitter, and we need a lefty at the top of the order. Lee can't play 162 games. Ramirez can't play 162 games. Maybe the right fielder can't play 162 games. Matsui can't play 162 games. So there will be plenty of playing time for DeRosa. I'm relaying this to you as how I think they'll say it.

The way I'm reading this also indicates to me you're quite confident a deal will get done. Perhaps I'm reading too much into it.

That's up to Matsui. He's the one who has to sign. All I'm saying is the Cubs are going hard after him.

Bruce, why do you gotta make me cry?

i'd love to hear your explanation as to why.

The statement only works if DeRosa is playing shortstop. His bat is a huge upgrade over Theriot's, but only a slight upgrade over Murton in RF and certainly a downgrade when you consider it would be Riot and Matsui up the middle.

DeRosa/Matsui/Murton>DeRosa/Matsui/Theriot

Of course, none of the above is worth a long term commitment to Kazuo freaking Matsui.

Under what appears to be Jim Hendry's plan, 4/9ths of the Cubs every day lineup will consist of Felix Pie, Ryan Theriot, Kaz Matsui, and a pitcher.

Add in no-sure-things Kosuke Fukudome and Geovany Soto and you're looking at a very real possibility that 2/3rds of the starting lineup could be absolutely awful.

But but but Lee is going to bounce back and Soriano will be healthy!!!!!!!!

Why would we be better with Matsui playing and not getting Fukudome?

Have you ever said anything, and then regretted it?

To clarify, IF getting Matsui has any positive influence on whether or not the Cubs can persuade Fukudome to join the team - the team would be better with Matsui. Simply because I think Fukudome is exactly what the Cubs need in the #2 spot in the lineup.

But I also think that Soriano belongs in the middle of the lineup, and I think Ryan Theriot is a good player.

And I think I'd have a chance with Scarlett Johanson if we were to wind up hanging out for some reason. We're both wrong.

The Rockies GM thinks Kaz is going to sign with someone other than the Rockies...

"We are always looking for pitching depth," O'Dowd said. "So that will be part of the winter meetings. And then there is our second-base situation, because it looks like Kaz is going to sign with somebody else."

Link.

Well, while we're making a to do list:

Please kick Jim Hendry in the nuts for us.

This Kaz Matsui stuff is just too much.
