According to a poster on the Friar Fantatics message board, Kevin Towers was on the radio saying Maddux and Peavy told him to go get Barrett.

Well, Maddux doesn't give a rip about baserunners taking an extra bag, so one of Barrett's glaring weaknesses in a lot of peoples' eyes isn't a concern. Peavy and Barrett are really good friends.

Maddux never wanted Barrett to catch him; it only happened upon Dusty's insistence. Maddux needs a defensive catcher to help stop the runners he doesn't hold on...

Maddux gives his catcher no chance to throw out a runner with his huge leg kick.

How much money is San Diego giving us in this deal?

There's quite a bit of confusion on which side is actually giving money. ESPN says the Cubs are giving money to the Padres, and mlb.com is reporting that the Padres are giving money to the Cubs. No word on the amount from either side.

I think I'll trust Greg Maddux when it comes to these situations(catcher defense)

That's why I brought it up.

The Greg Maddux argument against Barrett is officially moot... which makes this trade look all the worse.

From the other side of the fence...why on earth does San Diego do this deal? They trade a solid backup making 300K for a guy making 4.5 who will in all likely hood be their backup...or at least isn't "that" much better than their current 1mil per year starter...it doesn't make sense to me...what do they get out of this deal? A little more power? Barrett's Power #s will go down in that park...

I thought Petco favored the right-handed batter?

Linebrink is a good reliever, but EPatt should have been used as part of a better package. Our offense is also now weaker than it was 24 hours ago.

This is why I don't trust Hendry to deal anyone, ever. He's the king of trading low.

Hendry did okay getting D-Lee and A-Ram for garbage.

So he got lucky with those (and Nomar at the time), but weigh his good trades/signings against his bad ones. See which way your scale tips.

So it's luck when he lands two all-star players for nothing, but displays his true ability on the deals that don't work out? Hey, I'm not saying that Hendry hasn't had his share of bad deals, but how many GMs can score two players like Lee and Ram?

how long till we know if barrett is going to start in san diego?

the only reason i ask is because he is on my fantasy team and i may need to get some trade in the works to acquire another catcher now if he is going to be the backup

I'd start Barrett over Bard, why would Barrett be the backup?

I am frustrated with this deal largely b/c Jim continues to trade from a position of weakness. The whole world knows that we can no longer stand the likes of Barrett, Sosa, Farns, etc., so we get 60% of what we should for them.

How does the whole world decide which lucky team will get the Cubs castoffs at 60 cents on the dollar? If you're an owner of some other team do you not ask your GM why he isn't the one ripping off the Cubs?

Who knows, but it does disturb anyone else that Jim also seems to be trading with the same three or four damn teams over and over again? Didn't he go with the Fish at least twice (the Pierre deal, Clement / Six Fingers, and Lee), the Tigers twice (Farns and Neifi), the O's twice (Sosa and Patterson), and now SD twice (Williamson and Barret)? I know he sprinkled in deals with the Braves (Cruz), Giants (Hawkins), and both Sox (Nomar and Aardsma), but this patten concerns me greatly.

I think I have officially lost any glimmer of hope that Jim has a clue as to where this thing is going. I know many of you jumped ship long ago. I was just holding out a scintilla; now even that is gone. (see my sig)

Speaking of throwing out base runners, while Bowen hasn't been good (23 SB, 3 CS), San Diego's regular catcher, Josh Bard, has been every bit as bad (46 SB, 6 CS). Considering that Bard, when with Cleveland, was throwing out ~35% of would be base stealers, I think it's fair to say that the Pad's pitching staff deserves their fair share of the blame. The Padres have been the easiest team to run against in the majors.

It's hard to imagine Barrett's CS% getting any worse, but it probably will.

The fact that he's hit up some of the same teams doesn't really bother me. It's the results his teams have put up that bothers me.

GMs tend to build relationships with other GMs that make trade negotiations easier (or in the case of some GMs, more difficult).

Another Padres trade: Todd Walker for minor leaguer Jose Ceda.

Another Marlins trade: Todd Wellemeyer for minor leaguer Lincoln Holdzkom.

Well, it is easy to steal on the many in the Cubs pitching staff too.

Even if he does start over Bard, his offensive numbers this year are not that much better...even if you start him, considering defense and money is he really a 4.2 million (and a prospect) improvement over what they had?

I could be wrong, but I don't think that park favors any batters...I always thought it was a blatant pitchers park.

3 times with SD with Todd Walker being the 3rd.

Can't believe I lost to you.

:D

It was a very great battle and you were and are a very worthy opponent. I almost wish you had beat me so I won't have to suffer what will amount to a gang-style beatdown against TT.

Oh, and I forgot the Walker deal. Thanks.

and he also has worked with the A's twice (Barrett and Bynum), the Pirates twice (Ramirez-Lofton, Simon) the Dodgers (Izturis), the Twins (Nevin), the Devil Rays (Ryu), and probably a couple other teams that I haven't thought of. I don't think he necessarily is just focusing on certain teams.

Barrett's numbers so far in 2007 aren't necessarily what he's going to do the rest of the way. He had an awful May but has been solid in June, and they probably think his numbers will continue to look like they have in June because of what he's done for the past 3 years.
