I am frustrated with this deal largely b/c Jim continues to trade from a position of weakness. The whole world knows that we can no longer stand the likes of Barrett, Sosa, Farns, etc., so we get 60% of what we should for them.

How does the whole world decide which lucky team will get the Cubs castoffs at 60 cents on the dollar? If you're an owner of some other team do you not ask your GM why he isn't the one ripping off the Cubs?

Who knows, but it does disturb anyone else that Jim also seems to be trading with the same three or four damn teams over and over again? Didn't he go with the Fish at least twice (the Pierre deal, Clement / Six Fingers, and Lee), the Tigers twice (Farns and Neifi), the O's twice (Sosa and Patterson), and now SD twice (Williamson and Barret)? I know he sprinkled in deals with the Braves (Cruz), Giants (Hawkins), and both Sox (Nomar and Aardsma), but this patten concerns me greatly.

Yes, I've noticed that too. Hendry definitely has his favorites he likes to deal with, usually with teams where he has a history and/or connections. Now with MacPhail in Baltimore, I expect the amount of dealings with the Orioles will go up exponentionally. Or at least it would of if I wasn't confident that Hendry will be gone after this year (he'll quickly land on his feet to become the director of scouting for the O's).

I think I have officially lost any glimmer of hope that Jim has a clue as to where this thing is going. I know many of you jumped ship long ago. I was just holding out a scintilla; now even that is gone. (see my sig)

The fact that he's hit up some of the same teams doesn't really bother me. It's the results his teams have put up that bothers me.

GMs tend to build relationships with other GMs that make trade negotiations easier (or in the case of some GMs, more difficult).

I agree with your point on some level. Negotiating and relationships with my opposite nos. are a big part of what I do for a living. I certainly have better relationships with some Unions than others.

That said, I woudln't be very good at my job if I refused and/or was severely hampered in dealing with the Unions that I have only decent or even poor relations with. I am not saying that is what is happening with Hendry, but I can't recall another GM who seems to have only 4 or 5 teams on his speed dial the way Jim seems to.

How does this affect Barrett's pledge to contribute to Project 3000?

Highly unlikely that it changes anything.

Let's hope this is the pre-cursor to that Blanco+Jones for A-Rod deal that everyone keeps talking about. Now we'll only have to determine how much cash the Yankees will send the Cubs.

I hope that's sarcasm, because if it's not.... ](*,) ](*,) ](*,)

Thank God I saw this late; I'd have had a stroke if the deal was what people thought earlier in this thread (including patterson)

This isn't totally a bad thing if it opens the door for Soto to get some time the rest of this year, with a shot at being the starter in 2008.

Dontrelle Willis is contributing and he's obviously not a Cub in the first place. I'd assume Barrett will follow through, I'd hope so at least.

How much money is San Diego giving us in this deal?

There's quite a bit of confusion on which side is actually giving money. ESPN says the Cubs are giving money to the Padres, and mlb.com is reporting that the Padres are giving money to the Cubs. No word on the amount from either side.

When the dust settles, mlb.com will be wrong and the Padres will get cash from us.

So when will Tejeda be a Cub?

When he is sufficiently enough over the hill.

I'm not sure that's the case. He's dealt with 4-5 more frequently than others, but he's dealt with teams outside that circle as well. He's dealt with Beane. He dealt with the Indians for Gerut and dealt him to the Pirates, and he's dealt with the Pirates for others as well. He worked with Atlanta more than once, same with Boston. He's traded with Montreal (Macias and Barrett), Milwaukee (Grieve). He dealt with both the Rangers and Twins on deals involving Nevin.

I don't see any problem with this particular trend.

btw I think we should have traded for Jason Kendall. Yes he is downright horrible, but Sunnydoo really sold me on the guy.

we traded for another version of Jason Kendall, and he costs $10M less

This was probably already discussed, but who is the starter at C now? Are they going to call up Soto and give him a shot? the Cubs.com article says it might be Hill, which would really make us much worse offensively.

For someone who just woke up, can anyone give me the cliff notes version of this thread?

Cubs trade Barrett and cash to the Padres for Bowen and a low-A outfielder who was drafted in the supplemental round of last year's draft. No word on if Bowen is our new starting catcher, or if this means Soto will be called up to be the starting catcher.

Barrett traded.

Barrett and Patterson for Linebrink and Bowen.

That's not good.

Barrett for Bowen and some low A guy.

Meh.

Rob Bowen...

average-to below average slugging

average-to above average OBP

Obviously better defensively. I like the trade even though Barrett was the biggest pimp on the Cubs for sure.
